"Icetice" - eller hur man stavar till ingenting : En feltypsanalys av stavningen hos elever i årskurs 2 / "Icetice" - or how to spell "ingenting" : Error type analysis of the spelling among children in grade 2

Svensson, Sofie, Wisell, Louise January 2010 (has links)
Även hur detta kan vara till nytta i logopeder och lärares verksamheter diskuteras.</p> / <p>Spelling is a complex ability and few studies have been carried out on this topic. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to analyse the spelling ability among children in grade 2. In this study 86 pupils participated, 63 with reading difficulties and 23 with typical reading ability. The children’s misspellings of nonwords and real words were analysed using four different classification systems of misspellings. Correlations between the spelling ability and other cognitive abilities were made. Results showed that the group with typical reading ability performed significantly better than the group with reading difficulties, especially on the test of nonwords. Calculations showed correlations between spelling and reading and also between spelling and phonology. The results of the present study show that the group with reading difficulties has phonological deficits that affect their spelling. The analysis also suggests guiding principles for a new Swedish classification system of misspellings and a Swedish test of spelling ability. It also includes how the classification system and the test can be used in the work of speech therapists and teachers.</p>

Utformning och utprovning av ett fonologiskt baserat stavningstest

Andersson, Kristina, Prembäck, Maja January 2013 (has links)
The literature on spelling and spelling development suggests there is a strong relationship between spelling and phonology (Bruck &amp; Treiman, 1990; Caravolas, Hulme &amp; Snowling, 2001; Craig, 2006; Gindri, Keske-Soares &amp; Mota, 2007). Spelling, however, is considerably less researched than reading (Caravolas, Humle &amp; Snowling, 2001). Spelling difficulties are known to be more persistent in people with reading and writing disabilities, even when their reading has become acceptable (Høien &amp; Lundberg, 1999) but more research is needed in this area. Assessment and detailed knowledge of the difficulties is of great importance in order to provide the appropriate help for children with reading and writing disabilities (Frisk, 2010; Magnusson, Nauclér, &amp; Reuterskiöld, 2008). The purpose of the present study was to develop and try out a phonologically based spelling test for children, with focus on medial phonemes. The study contained 150 pupils in grade 1 and 2 as well as pupils in remedial teaching due to reading and spelling difficulties in the same grades. In addition to spelling, all pupils were tested for reading ability, phonological awareness, nonverbal intelligence and auditory discrimination. Misspellings were analysed with three quantitative and one qualitative classification methods. Results showed that the spelling test based on analyse of medial phonemes captured misspellings to the same extent as the other quantitative classification method.  Pupils in grade 2 received significant higher results in the spelling test than pupils in grade 1. The group of typically developed pupils had significantly better results than the pupils with reading and writing disabilities. Results also showed that real words were significantly easier to spell than non-words. Moreover, significant correlations between spelling and reading ability, and spelling and phonological awareness, were found. The strong correlation between spelling ability and phonological awareness, and the fact that children with reading and writing disabilities performed poorly on spelling of non-words, lead to the conclusion that spelling and phonology are closely related, which is supported by the literature (Bruck &amp; Treiman, 1990; Caravolas, Hulme &amp; Snowling, 2001; Craig, 2006; Gindri, Keske-Soares &amp; Mota, 2007).

L2 English spelling error analysis : An investigation of English spelling errors made by Swedish senior high school students / Felstavningsanalys i engelska som andraspråk : En undersökning av stavfel i engelska gjorda av svenska gymnasieelever

Kusuran, Amir January 2017 (has links)
Proper spelling is important for efficient communication between people with different first languages in the 21st century. While Swedish functions as an intranational language within Sweden, it sees little to no use outside of Scandinavia. English fills the role as a second language that all Swedish students must learn, yet more focus appears to be given to grammar rather than spelling. Spelling is important and knowing the kinds of spelling errors Swedish learners of English tend to make can help educators improve the spelling proficiency of their students. The aim of this study is to investigate the spelling errors made by senior high school students in Sweden by analyzing a collection of essays written by students and gathered in the Uppsala Learner English Corpus (ULEC). The results of this study show that spelling proficiency nearly doubled for students in their third year in senior high school compared to their first year, yet the distribution of spelling errors remained the same. Additionally, some particular sounds that appear to be especially problematic for Swedish spellers were identified, such as /ə/, /l/, /s/ and /k/.
