Supports to improve the lives of adults with FASD : an enthnographic study of a mentorship program

Schemenauer, Carrie Ann 11 July 2011 (has links)
This ethnographical study provides a better understanding into the daily lives of adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), it demonstrates how mentorship can increase their quality of life and finally it provides recommendations on how to best support them. FASD is a life-long disability that diminishes a persons cognitive and adaptive functioning. In this study, adults with FASD and their mentors were interviewed at the CUMFI (Central Urban Métis Federation Inc.) Wellness Centre, a mentorship program for individuals with cognitive disabilities in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to determine the adults need for support, what supports were received, how effective that support was and how to improve the support. This research was approached through critical ethnography and the result is a call for social change to help individuals with FASD. The CUMFI Wellness Centre is an effective mentorship model that could be used to design other mentorship programs for adults with FASD across the country. In this study, it was determined that the adults with FASD involved in the mentorship program at the CUMFI Wellness Centre had increased self-esteem and a better quality of life. Mentorship can help adults with FASD to find housing, buy groceries, receive community supports and maintain a healthy lifestyle which will help them function better in society. Support and mentorship provides safeguards to decrease the likelihood of adults with FASD ending up on the streets, in jails, hospitals and treatment centers. We must respond to the needs of these individuals and their families and provide supports for them. It is ethical that we do so as these individuals were not responsible for their cognitive disability from the prenatal alcohol to which they were exposed. It is practical and cost-effective to assist this population so that they can healthy and productive members of our society.

The financial literacy of university students: A comparison of graduating seniors' financial literacy and debt level

McKenzie, Vandeen M 01 June 2009 (has links)
The level of university students' financial literacy has been discussed in Congress, opinion pieces in the media and the increasing level of student debt has been used to suggest their financial illiteracy. This study investigated the financial literacy of graduating university seniors by comparing their financial literacy level with their debt level. The difference in financial literacy levels of business majors, minors and non-business majors was assessed. The relationship between graduating university seniors' financial literacy level and their credit card and student loan debt was also reviewed. Gender, employment status, ethnicity, family income and college major were similarly examined to see if they were predictors of financial literacy levels and debt levels. Although financial literacy is frequently discussed in the national arena there is no clear definition of financial literacy; this ambiguity has led to multiple definitions. In this study, financial literacy was defined as "an individual's ability to obtain, understand, and evaluate the relevant information necessary to make decisions with an awareness of the likely financial consequences" (Mason & Wilson, 2000). The Jump$tart questionnaire (Mandell, 2004) was used to calculate participants' financial literacy level. The study found that the majority of the students had a high level of financial literacy with an average financial literacy score of 72.56% and with students majoring in business performing significantly better than non-business students. The use of debt level as an indicator of financial literacy level was found to be incorrect. No relationship was identified between financial literacy level and credit card debt or student loan debt. The study also found that demographic factors could not be used to predict financial literacy level and debt level. It was found that the majority of participants learned about managing money either on their own or at home from family members. More than half of the participants expressed an interest in taking a personal finance class but less than 20% were aware that this course was offered at their university. More effective methods are recommended to ensure that students become more aware such courses being offered on campus.

Financially Wiser: using financial management to improve the wellbeing of young and middle-aged adults in the community

Ferrera, Charisma C. 18 January 2022 (has links)
There is evidence that a person’s financial situation is associated with their wellbeing now and in the future. However, financial stress is present in many adults’ lives, impacting their role and participation in different occupational domains such as work, health management, and instrumental activities of daily living. Financial stress is consistently one of the top three causes of stress in the United States (APA, 2015). Financial stress is associated with cumulative effects that have a negative impact on a person’s physical health (Gallo et al., 2011; Kahn & Pearlin, 2006; Sturgeon et al., 2016) and mental health (Fitch et al., 2011; Mucci et al., 2016). Improving a person’s financial wellbeing is one way to mitigate financial stress. This project focused on the factors affecting a person’s financial decision-making skills and behavior, leading to financial stress or financial wellbeing. The evidence literature and current approaches were reviewed and contributed to the development of Financially Wiser, a theory-driven evidence-based approach for developing financial literacy and positive financial management behavior that leads to improved financial wellbeing. Financially Wiser is designed as a community-based financial management education program facilitated by an occupational therapist. A pre-test post-test evaluation will be conducted to determine participant satisfaction and the degree to which the program goals were achieved.
