The Diyarbakir Ulu Cami : social history and interaction at the Great Mosque

Andersen, Angela Lyn. 10 April 2008 (has links)
The Diyarbalur Ulu Cami provides an important architectural focal point for exploring intercultural and inter and intra religious interaction. The Ulu Cami, the Great Mosque of the city of Diyarbakir in eastern Turkey, has functioned as a place of worship and a centre of civic and community activities since its initial phase of construction in 1091-92, under Sultan Malik Shah of the Great Seljuks. By adopting - '. regional architectural materials and craftspeople, and through the inclusion of pre- Islamic, dassicizing spolia, the mosque complex has maintained a connection to the local vernacular. The ethnically, linguistically and religiously diverse population of Diyarbakir has influenced the form and development of the architecture through additions such as a distkct prayer area for Kurdish Shafi'i Muslims. Over the centuries, mosque patrons, including political and religious leaders, made efforts to incorporate architectural symbolism, revealing strength and piety by referencing such edlfices as the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus.

Mosques in France: The Visible Presence of Islam

Arnold, Ashley Patricia 05 1900 (has links)
Numerous laws are being directed toward subduing the visible presence of Islam throughout France, and in return French Muslims are becoming bolder in the projection of their faith. This thesis examines the presence of Islam in France throughout history and in contemporary French civilization. Specifically, this thesis addresses the issues regarding the visible presence of Islam in France through such institutions as mosques and how they are the key symbols representing the prominence of Islam in France. It looks at what lies in the collective French mind that creates such an influence on today's policies and outlook, as well as identifies the key characters that dominate the current affairs surrounding Islam in France. The thesis reviews the country's past relations with the visible presence of Islam through the controversies surrounding the construction of famous mosques. In addition, this thesis underlines key areas where both the State and the Muslim population must make concessions in order to avoid further conflict.

Quintessence of faith: A mosque for Khayelitsha

Chohan, Shaakira January 2010 (has links)
Muhammad sat shivering as he told his wife about the revelation he had received. It was his habit to retreat to the Cave of Hira where he would meditate for days. It was on one of such meditations that the angel Gabriel came to him with Divine Revelation. This was the beginning of many more revelations which would make up the Holy Quran in its entirety. This was the birth of Islam, a religion, a way of life. After years of rejection and persecution in Mecca, God instructed Muhammed (PBUH) and his followers to migrate to Medina. It was in Medina that it was decided to build a place of prayer, and so began the "architecture" of the world's first mosque.
