Thesis (Ph.D. (Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The study investigated the phenomena of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in women in
Ehlanzeni District, Mpumulanga, South Africa in order to develop coping guidelines. This is
because, one in every four, or a quarter (25%) of all women in South Africa, are assaulted by
their partners every week. The study adopted a qualitative approach utilising an exploratory,
hermeneutic phenomenological research design. A non-probability sample of ten women, who
were victims of IPV, was used. The theoretical framework for the study was Afrocentric theory.
This framework was used so that the investigation was underpinned by truly African concepts.
The study was conducted at Victim Empowerment Programmes in Mkhuhlu and Acornhoek,
Ehlanzeni District in Mpumalanga Province. Semi-structured interviews were used as data
collection instruments and analaysed using thematic analysis (TA). The following themes and
sub-themes emerged out of the data: Theme 1: Understandings of Intimate Partner Violence
(IPV); Theme 2: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) experienced by participants; Theme 3:
Reasons for Intimate Partner Violence (IPV); Sub-theme 3.1: Alcohol as a facilitator of IPV;
Sub-theme 3.2: Early parenthood as a facilitator of IPV; Sub-theme 3.3: Poverty as a facilitator
of IPV and Sub-theme 3.4: Observed behaviour as a facilitator for IPV; Theme 4: The role of
lobola/culture in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV); Theme 5: What makes participants stay in
abusive relationships (marriages) and Theme 6: Steps, or interventions, taken by participants in
order to cope with Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Based on these findings it was
recommended that a study of male perceptions towards IPV, and a nationwide study or studies
on IPV, be carried out under the auspices of the Department of Social Development (DoS)
and/or the Department of Health (DoH) with the help of relevant non-governmental
organisations (NGOs). Coping guidelines for women victims of IPV were developed out of the
research findings.

of them highlighting the high concentrations of chemical pollutants in the Loskop Dam.
These reports show how pollution in the dam has affected aquatic life and poses a
health risk. However, limited studies have been conducted on the impact of declining
water quality on tourism in Loskop Dam. These studies focus more on the ecological
aspect of the dam. Therefore, the main objective of the current study is to explore how
tourism is affected by the declining water quality in Loskop Dam by examining the
impacts of water pollution on the tourism sector linked to Loskop Dam and associated
socio-economic effects. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted to collect
information from small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) employees and
freshwater tourists, and interviews were conducted with SME managers to get more
information on tourism activities, water pollution in Loskop Dam, as well as information
on the impacts of decreased water quality. The outcome is that a decrease in water
quality affects tourism negatively, inclusive of recreational activities, business
operations, and subsequently having a negative social and economic impact on

The efficacy of integrated development plan implementation towards the enhancement of basic service delivery : case of Mpakeni Village, Mbombela Local Municipality, South AfricaThabethe, Lifa Rodney January 2023 (has links)
Thesis (M.Dev. (Planning and Management)) -- University of Limpopo, 2023 / The study aimed at investigating the efficacy of the Integrated Development Plan
(IDP)‟s implementation to enhance basic service delivery at Mpakeni Village in the
Mpumalanga Province. The South African government constitutionally mandates local
municipalities, which are the spheres closer to societies, to provide basic services to
their constituencies. The South African government has been attempting to address
service delivery challenges and existing backlogs bequeathed by the apartheid regime.
For this reason, instruments such as the IDP have been formulated to enhance basic
service delivery, especially in previously disadvantaged communities. However, in many
South African municipalities, such as Mbombela Local Municipality, the IDP is used only
as a blue-print rather than a tool to enhance basic service delivery.
The study was guided by the Humanistic Paradigm and Systems Theory. It employed
both qualitative and quantitative research approaches to investigate the institutional
factors that lead to effective IDP implementation. Assisted questionnaires and
interviews were used to collect data from the respondents in the Mpakeni Village. The
sample of the study was used to select different household respondents and municipal
officials. The study involved a total of 70 household respondents and 4 key informants
from the municipality. The research findings indicated the lack of capabilities in the
municipality, high corruption rate and maladministration, as factors which hindered the
improvement of basic service delivery. It was found that many of the residents do not
understand what an IDP is all about. This means that many local citizens have little or
no knowledge about how basic services are delivered to their communities. It was also
found that there is lack of public participation during the IDP process and its
implementation. Therefore, the study concluded that IDP implementation does not
enhance basic service delivery because of the inexperience of municipal officers,
among other things. Consequently, the study recommended that only experienced
candidates should be employed to implement the IDP whilst the existing ones should be
trained.

The management of "no fee" schools in the Mpumalanga : a case study of selected secondary schoolsThwala, Sipho Moses 10 1900 (has links)
The study focuses on the extent to which the “no fee” policy affects the financial management and support for educational programmes at “no fee” secondary schools in Mpumalanga. The “no fee” policy derives from the Education Laws Amendment Act (Act No. 24 of 2005) according to which the levying of mandatory fees have been abolished at public schools that are declared “no fee” institutions. The State has subsequently assumed the role of funding these “no fee” schools in order to create greater access to quality education and to improve the supply of educational resources as well as equipment in the impoverished schools.
The findings of the research study eventually led to the recommendations that are presented as guidelines for the SGBs, principals as well as education authorities on the management of “no fee” schools. / Further Teacher Education / M.A. (Education Management)

Climate change awareness: a case study of small scale maize farmers in Mpumalanga province, South AfricaOduniyi, Oluwaseun Samuel 07 1900 (has links)
This study was conducted in the Nkangala district, in the province of Mpumalanga in South Africa. This province remains the largest forestry production region in South Africa. The majority of people living in Mpumalanga are farmers and they have contributed immensely to promote food security. The objective of the study was to determine the level of climate change awareness among small scale maize producers in Mpumalanga province. Random sampling techniques was used to select two hundred and fifty one (251) farmers to be interviewed. A pre-tested questionnaire was administered to maize farmers, focusing on matters relating to climate change awareness in maize production. Data was captured and analysed using software package for social science (SPSS version 20 of 2012). Descriptive statistics were applied to analyse and describe the data. Logistic regression analysis followed to demonstrate the significance of the independent variables on climate change awareness. The results of the analysis indicated that the information received and the size of the farm had an impact on climate change awareness in the area of study. It was therefore recommended that the majority of farmers in Mpumalanga needed to be made aware of climate change in order to assist them to build the adaptive capacity, increase resilience and reduce vulnerability. The schooling experiences of secondary school learners from child- headed households in Thulamahashe Circuit, Bushbuckridge District, Mpumalanga Province, RSAChidziva, Verna Nyaradzo 28 March 2014 (has links)
school learnersChild-headed household is a phenomenon that is growing in South Africa. As such, it is imperative to uncover the realities of children in this situation. This study explores and describes the schooling experiences of secondary school learners from child-headed households. This qualitative study included a sample of 20 grade 10 and 11 learners from four secondary schools. Data were collected through structured interviews and document analysis. The Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyze the data. The findings suggest that secondary school learners from child-headed households live in poverty and encounter experiences such as absenteeism, psychological trauma, gender-based discrimination, lack of adequate food and scholastic materials, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. These experiences impact negatively on their schooling. The role of the University of South Africa in the development of human resources in the rural communities of Mpumalanga ProvinceMaminza, Paul Mndawe 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Curriculum Studies))—University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The rural nature of most parts of Mpumalanga Province poses a number of human resources development challenges to the people in the rural communities of the province. The high rate of black African people aged 20 years or older who had no schooling (32% in 1996 and 30.1% in 2001) in the province is one such a challenge. The overall unemployment rate in Mpumalanga increased from 18.6% in 1996 to 23.1% in 2001 and 26.3% in 2007 (Statistics SA, 1996; 2001 & 2007), while for black Africans in particular it increased from 20.3% in 1996 to 24.6% in 2001. Since Mpumalanga is a rural province that is populated mainly by black Africans, the conclusion may be drawn that most of the people who are affected by unemployment live in the rural communities of the province. Research was carried out to investigate the role of the University of South Africa in the development of human resources in the rural communities of Mpumalanga. The institutes/bureaus of the University of South Africa were identified as the target population for the research. A questionnaire was administered to the managers of 21 sampled institutes/bureaus of the University of South Africa. The colleges at the University of South Africa offer the non-formal, non-subsidised and need-driven training programmes through the institutes/bureaus which are regarded as the delivery arm of those programmes. The research found that the institutes/bureaus of the University of South Africa had no significant contribution to make towards the development of human resources in the targeted communities and that most of the programmes presented were not targeting the critical developmental needs of the people in rural communities. The role and involvement of the University of South Africa and other higher education institutions in rural communities should be directed by the genuine developmental needs of people in these communities. The training providers targeting rural areas should be informed by both theoretical and practical considerations towards the provision of training intervention programmes. The identification of training and developmental needs is crucial to a successful intervention for the development of human resources in rural communities.

The research concluded, among others, that the University of South Africa is lacking in observing the stakeholder role and the strategic partner role of a university in the development of human resources in rural communities. It is however focusing, to a certain extent, on the service provider role. Furthermore, the University of South Africa is not carrying out the service learning practice through which the university students could participate and contribute to the development of human resources in rural communities. Universities have the knowledge base, expertise, networks and, in most cases, the required resources to make a contribution to the development of human resources in rural communities. The universities should therefore commit themselves to this aspect in order to assist in the development of rural communities. The practice of social responsibility implies that universities should become involved in community development activities in the needy rural communities without a profit intent, but with a community development rationale. Many poor people from rural communities would benefit from the practice of social responsibility by universities. / AFRIKAANS OPSOMMING: Vanweë die landelike aard van die grootste deel van Mpumalanga ervaar die plattelandse bevolking in hierdie provinsie talle uitdagings met betrekking tot die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne. Een so ʼn uitdaging in die provinsie is die groot persentasie swart mense bo die ouderdom van 20 jaar wat geen skoolopleiding ontvang het nie (32% in 1996 en 30.1% in 2001). Die totale werkloosheidsyfer in Mpumalanga het van 18.6% in 1996 tot 23.1% in 2001 en 26.3% in 2007 gestyg (Statistics SA, 1996; 2001 & 2007), en vir swart mense in hierdie provinsie in die besonder het dit van 20.3% in 1996 tot 24.6% in 2001 toegeneem. Aangesien Mpumalanga ʼn landelike provinsie is wat hoofsaaklik deur swart mense bevolk word, kan die afleiding gemaak word dat die meeste van die mense wat deur werkloosheid geraak word in die landelike gebiede van die provinsie woon. Die institute/buro’s van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika is as die teikenpopulasie van die navorsing geïdentifiseer. Die bestuurders van 21 institute/buro’s van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika wat as steekproef gedien het, het ʼn vraelys voltooi. Die Kolleges aan die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika bied die nie-formele, nie-gesubsidieerde en behoeftegedrewe opleidingsprogramme aan deur die institute/buro’s wat as die vertakking beskou word wat diens moet lewer ten opsigte van hierdie programme. Die navorsing het bevind dat die institute/buro’s van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika ten tyde van die ondersoek nie in staat was om enige beduidende bydrae te maak tot die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in die geteikende gemeenskappe nie en dat die meeste van die programme wat aangebied is nie op die kritieke ontwikkelingsbehoeftes van die mense in landelike gebiede gerig was nie.
Daar word aanbeveel dat die rol en betrokkenheid van die Universiteit van Suid-Afrika en ander hoëronderwysinstellings in landelike gemeenskappe deur die werklike ontwikkelingsbehoeftes van die mense in hierdie gemeenskappe gerig word.

Voornemende verskaffers van opleiding in landelike gebiede behoort beide teoretiese en praktiese oorwegings in ag te neem wanneer hulle intervensieprogramme vir opleiding beplan en ontwerp. Die identifisering van opleidings- en ontwikkelingsbehoeftes is van kritieke belang in die daarstelling van ʼn suksesvolle intervensie vir die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in landelike gebiede. Op grond van die navorsing is tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat UNISA nie sy belanghebberrol en sy rol as strategiese vennoot as universiteit in die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in landelike gemeenskappe nakom nie. Daar word wel in ʼn mate aan die eise van die diensverskafferrol voldoen. Voorts kom die toepassing van diensleer, waardeur studente deel kan word van en bydra tot die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in landelike gemeenskappe, nie tot sy reg nie. Universiteite beskik oor die kennisbasis, kundigheid, netwerke en, in die meeste gevalle, oor die nodige bronne om ’n bydrae te maak tot die ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne in landelike gemeenskappe. Universiteite behoort hulle dus te verbind tot hierdie aspek van hulle sosiale verantwoordelikheid ten einde ’n bydrae te maak tot die ontwikkeling van landelike gemeenskappe. Die toepassing van sosiale verantwoordelikheid impliseer dat universiteite, sonder winsmotief, betrokke behoort te raak by gemeenskapsontwikkelingsaktiwiteite in die arm, landelike gemeenskappe. Baie arm mense in landelike gemeenskappe sal deur die toepassing van sodanige sosiale verantwoordelikheid deur universiteite baat vind.

The inorganic chemistry and geochemical evolution of pans in the Mpumalanga Lakes District, South Africa06 November 2009 (has links)
Master of Science / Despite Chrissie Lake being South Africa’s largest freshwater lake, the chemistry of this lake and the surrounding lakes and pans in the Mpumalanga Lake District has never been studied in detail. These closed systems show varying chemistry while being in very close proximity to one another, adding to the uniqueness of this area where pans, usually typical of arid regions, are found in a humid area. The factors affecting the water chemistry of these lakes needed to be identified and explained. In order to evaluate the water chemistry in this unique environment, water samples were taken at the end of the wet and dry seasons, in April and September 2007 respectively. The major pans were sampled, as were adjacent fountains or springs, indicative of the perched groundwater aquifers found in this area, as well as borehole water from the surrounding farms. Alkalinity was determined by manual titration upon returning from the field while pH and conductivity measurements were performed on site. Major cations and anions were analysed for using ICP-OES and Ion Chromatography respectively. Sediment samples were collected from the floor of each pan in the summer sampling and the mineralogy determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). During September 2007 sampling, precipitates found on the floors and banks of the pans were also collected and analysed using XRD, to identify mineral species precipitating from solution. Results from the above analyses show that each pan in the MLD has a unique chemistry, which cannot be inferred from neighbouring pans. The inorganic chemistry differs from pan to pan as a result of these separate, closed systems being at different stages of the evaporation process. Throughout the path from groundwater to the pan, waters are subject to mineral dissolution and precipitation, adsorption and biological mechanisms, which continually add or remove solutes from solution. Although seemingly simple, there are certainly other factors that play a role in the evolution of the water chemistry. Key to the current inorganic chemistry is the balance between import and export of solutes. The groundwater, predominantly the perched aquifer water, brings solutes into the pans and blowouts of precipitates on the pan floor at the end of the dry season, when the wind is strongest, results in the export of solutes. This process is significant in maintaining the overall freshness of the pans in the MLD, contrasting to their western counter parts that evolve to highly saline saltpans. Other factors such as the periodicity of pans drying completely, the surface area to catchment area ratio (CA/SA), the formation and dissolution of efflorescent crusts and the presence or absence of reeds all have varying effects on the water chemistry of the lakes and pans. Significantly, the amount of evaporative concentration that a pan evolves through has been shown to be dependant on the CA/SA ratio with pans having larger ratios being lower in salinity compared to those with low ratios being the most saline pans. The reservoir available to the pans with the large catchment areas sustains these pans through the dry months and slows the progression of evaporation. It is clear that the factors affecting the hydrochemistry of the pan waters can not be simplified to a single process affecting a single dilute inflow of water to produce our final solution of evaporated pan water. Instead, water in the pans reflects a long-term evolution of solute species, with some memory effect remaining after each season of evaporation. The result is an accumulation of solutes as they are added continuously via dilute inflow and then removed from the waters at various times, particularly during dry periods when evaporite minerals are formed and transported out of the system.
