The Influence of Corporate Interests on USAID's Development Agenda: The Case of Haiti

This dissertation is an attempt to use the radical political economy approach, which assumes that there is a connection between a state’s strategic interests and the interests of dominant multinational corporations (MNCs) located within a state’s territory, to explain continuity in the USAID development agenda and lending patterns during the past 30 years of development aid to Haiti. Employing the qualitative method of "process-tracing," my study concludes that the radical political economy approach has an explanatory power when it comes to understanding continuity in the USAID development agenda and lending patterns during the past 30 years of development aid to Haiti. The evidence shows that USAID has implemented in Haiti, from the 1980s through the post-9/11 Washington Consensus period, neoliberal policies that conform to the political economy of US multinational corporations (US MNCs). Contrary to the claim that the USAID-sponsored post-earthquake development paradigm has departed from previous development strategies, the study has shown that USAID has used the occurrence of the January 2010 earthquake tragedy to accelerate in Haiti the implementation of a neoliberal agenda congenial to the business promotion of multinational investors, particularly US multinational corporations. In terms of the way ahead, the study argues for the implementation of a new development approach articulated by a legitimate Haitian state and primarily intended to promote the socioeconomic development of the poorest Haitians.

Does being based in an emerging market influence the positive attention multinational corporation subsidiaries obtain from headquarters

This study assessed multinational corporations (MNCs) from developed markets with subsidiaries based in the emerging markets, to determine whether being based in a dynamic market influences the positive attention in terms of support and autonomy that these subsidiaries receive from headquarters. The purpose of the research was to expand on previous research conducted by Bouquet and Birkinshaw (2008) by surveying subsidiaries from emerging markets, and determining whether MNCs amend their attention strategy to subsidiaries based in emerging markets as a result of their limited understanding of the dynamics of the local business environment, or whether they maintain a standardised strategy for engaging all subsidiaries. 39 MNC subsidiaries from the emerging markets of Southern Africa, Latin America and the Middle East were surveyed via a web-based questionnaire, assessing various aspects of their business activities and local business environment to determine the type of positive attention which subsidiaries in these markets received from headquarters. Abstracts in English, Northern Sotho and Xhosa / This study critically explores the link between internationalisation theories and outward foreign direct investment (FDI) – a linkage which is well documented in the literature. Numerous studies have established that the internationalisation process recognises both firm- and market-specific aspects, which greatly determine the direction of outward FDI in terms of volume and pattern. In this interaction, path dependency is determined by the intensity of overlapping aspects or linkages, from firm-level heterogeneity and host market aspects that direct investment patterns in terms of the latter, to the volumes of firm-level adjustments. Firm-level heterogeneity comprises those traits, which enable an individual firm to make an investment decision, select a market-entry strategy and create the competitive advantages that will sustain its investments. Macro-level or country-specific aspects encompass those traits or characteristics of host markets, which encourage FDI on the part of multinational enterprises (MNEs). Most studies overlook the path dependency of country- and firm-specific aspects, which are crucial to the internationalisation processes of international business, economics and trade. Academic studies either focus on macro- or micro-level aspects, without paying specific attention to the path dependency of expansion strategies. The present study attempts to fill these gaps in the existing body of knowledge, by investigating international business in these contexts. The rationale for undertaking this study was two-fold: first, FDI holds proven benefits for host markets, which include economic growth, industry spillover, human capital development and transitory tacit knowledge. From a firm-level perspective, outward FDI largely enhances the capacity of MNEs, prompting an increase in asset accumulation, market share and human capital development, the more efficient utilisation of resources and return on equity. In this study, an argument is presented for measuring the variables of both firm- and market-specific aspects, since most existing studies in this genre focus either on micro- or macro-level determinants, or totally overlook the importance of linkages. Second, no documented research has investigated the path dependency of expansion strategies, especially in Africa. Crucially, the importance of path dependency of South Africa’s outward investment has not been documented either. Further, existing evidence on the role the path dependency of expansion strategies plays in outward FDI are scarce, with even fewer studies following a sectorial approach. This study attempts to fill these academic research gaps by reflecting both firm- and market-level data from various sources for the period 1995–2015, using panel dynamic regression models. The study found that the linkages between firm heterogeneity (firm-level evidence) and market-level aspects create a path dependency of expansion strategies. MNEs adopt either joint ventures or wholly owned subsidiaries (or both) as market-entry strategies, but the decision is informed by the intensity of those firm heterogeneity aspects that allow them to exploit opportunities and mitigate risk in host markets. Notably, the intensity of path dependency seemingly varies from one industrial segment to the next. The impulse response approach delivered evidence that one standard deviation shock of firm-specific variables led to a moderate improvement in firm-level capacities in the short run, but a significant improvement in the long run. The same result was recorded for market-level aspects, with the intensity of the results varying from one industry to the next. The causality test attempted to explore the causal relationship between the study variables in both firm- and market-level aspects. Empirical evidence from the study indicates that the size of the firm and its capacity to utilise its resources efficiently, influence their investment in host markets. As regards market-specific aspects, the size of the economy, levels of industry and trade openness were found to have a causal effect on the inflow of FDI in host markets. The intensity of causal aspects was also found to vary from one industry to the next, due to variations in firm level heterogeneity and their linkage in terms of aspects related to the host market. Assessment of the efficacy of the mechanisms for conflict resolution in employment relations at a multinational company in Nigeria : lessons from South Africa

Doctor Educationis / An organisation or country that aims to experience industrial tranquillity and collaboration among social partners in employment relations must put in place an outstanding and potent conflict resolution mechanism. Within the context of labour relations, conflict is predictable in the workplace environment and the result could be a strike or lockout. This result can be avoided if there is an appropriate conflict settlement machinery on the ground. Overall, conflict resolution mechanisms must be centred around negotiation and dialogue which is an integral part of dealing with discord whenever it arises in employment relations. This study seeks to investigate the efficacy of mechanisms for conflict resolution in employment relations at a multinational company in Nigeria and South Africa. The study also examines the effectiveness of the machinery for regulating the affairs of labour relations statutorily or voluntarily. Additionally, the study undertakes a comparative analysis of different mechanisms employed whenever conflicts arise in both employment relations environments that are in South Africa and Nigeria. This analysis gives more insight into how conflict resolution mechanisms work in South Africa as compared to Nigeria. Moreover, the study explores the necessary tools and frameworks of legislative resolution instruments that lead to long-term reconciliation and peace thereby reducing the rate of disputes in employment relations in South Africa as well as Nigeria. A non-experimental descriptive research design that utilises a survey approach was adopted in the study. The research employed a mixed-method approach, that is, qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed to respondents in two organisations, 200 for each organisation in Nigeria, and South Africa respectively via online google forms. A total of 363 responses were returned for the quantitative data collection while a total of 20 respondents participated in online interviews as part of the qualitative data collection. Thus, the final aggregate sample size for this research was 383 participants. Results from the study indicated that the conflict resolution mechanism in South Africa functioned successfully compared to that of the counterpart organisation in Nigeria. Moreover, the study revealed that South Africa has a developed apparatus for managing industrial conflicts. possibly in Africa as a whole. This was found to be xi because of how the South African government rigidly pitched a high labour legislative framework and requirement concerning labour conflict resolution. This is intended to create a conducive and harmonious labour relations environment. It is assumed that introducing a similar legislative framework into Nigeria’s labour relations environment will also foster a more harmonious relationship amongst the parties and social partners. Finally, the study proposes and recommends that host environments of multinational corporations in Africa must continuously review their conflict resolution frameworks so that it serves as a guide for the operations of multinational companies that come to their countries. In addition, the study highlights that such mechanisms must make provision for opportunities for employees to feel that they are heard through sincere dialogue processes and effective communication channels between employers and employees. Overall, the study recommends that accommodating and congruent conflict resolution strategies must be encouraged among members of staff to facilitate a nonviolent labour relations atmosphere.

Recent empirical literature has provided greater insight into the strategies and the extent of multinational companies’ tax avoidance. Simultaneously, in the last decades, the corporate tax rate has gradually decreased in most developed countries, often in the interest of attracting foreign investment. In 2013, Sweden decreased its corporate tax from 26.3% to 22%. This paper is an empirical study of the effect of the corporate tax change on Swedish multinational companies’ tax avoidance. By using a difference-in-differences model, and a sample of firm-level financial data from 19 821 domestic and multinational Swedish companies covering the period 2011 – 2015, a regression analysis is performed to estimate the effect of the policy change. Irrespective of empirical specification, I find no statistically significant effect of the tax change on tax avoidance.

The internationalization process of firms has essentially been in two contexts, one focusing on those from the developed, and the other on those from the developing economies (Buckley et al.2008). According to (Panond, 2007), internationalization of Emerging Market Multinational Corporations (EMMNCs) has appeared in two waves, the first wave, which emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s viewed the competitive advantages of EMMNCs as being derived from their ability in reducing costs through scale economies, often substituting machinery with human labour and replacing imported inputs with cheaper local ones, or improving performance through knowledge of operating in less developed markets.The objective of this research has been to understand the variables that drive the success of Mergers and Acquisitions as a mode of entry in Emerging Markets. The research looks at the application of these variables my multinational corporations from both emerging markets and those from developed markets; the aim is to ascertain if these variables are applied differently depending on the type of economy a multinational originates from.Given the saturation of developed markets multinationals have embarked on growth strategies into emerging markets where these markets are perceived as untapped, however most have failed to realise shareholder value as a result of the dynamics and challenges that these economies bring.Fukao et al. 2005 suggests that market share is one of the most useful means used in assessing the structure of the market and a particularly desirable characteristic of a target firm. This is usually couched in terms of having a ―good market position‖ in the relevant market. The specific target criterion is of special consideration in sectors which may show a high degree of stability of market structure (as compared to those which are characterized by technology intensity, low entry barriers and powerful competition, showing high volatility of market shares). As a result, it is expected that the market share variable will bear a positive coefficient in explaining the likelihood of foreign acquisition.The research proved successful that the application of the variables that determine success of an acquisition and merger between multinationals was similar and what drove this success was mainly based on experience in doing mergers and acquisitions. The impact of political risk on foreign direct investment decisions by South African multinational corporations

South African Multinational Corporations (MNCs) are expanding their operations and seeking investment opportunities elsewhere bedsides South Africa. Some of these opportunities present themselves in unfamiliar environments which are politically risky nonetheless South African MNCs continue to invest in such countries. The aim of this research paper is to establish the impact of political risk on foreign direct investment decisions by South African MNCs. The paper seeks to establish key political risk factors that South African MNCs consider prior to investing in a country deemed politically risky. Once they have indentified these political risk factors, what are the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) drivers attracting them to a specific country despite its political climate? The paper attempts to understand the decision making process of MNCs when seeking to invest in a politically risky country and to what extent do MNCs involve the incumbent government and other local stakeholders in this process. Lastly the paper seeks to establish how MNCs manage the impact of political risk in a country.A qualitative research methodology with an exploratory design was used to collect the data. In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with eight representatives from South African MNCs which are doing business in politically risky countries.The results reveal that political risk has a significant impact on the FDI decision making process of South African MNCs and how they go about conducting this process has a far reaching impact on the success of the MNC in a politically risky country. Conducting a thorough political environment assessment is critical, by engaging the incumbent government and all relevant stakeholders is key when seeking to invest in politically risky countries. Weight versus voice : how foreign subsidiaries gain attention from corporate headquarters in emerging markets

The research problem of this project is to investigate if, and how, Birkinshaw and Bouquet‟s model of subsidiary attention seeking by means of weight and voice needs to be modified for MNC subsidiaries operating in emerging markets. The qualitative research technique used for this research was the multiple-case study method. Key findings are that weight is moderated by institutional environments and voice by national culture in emerging markets. Recommendations are made to assist managers of subsidiaries in increasing weight and voice in emerging markets in order to gain more attention from Corporate Headquarters.
