Two manuscripts of instrumental ensemble music from the Elizabethan period (British Museum add. Ms. 31390 and Bodleian Library Mss. D. 212-216)

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The purpose of this study was to examine the development of Elizabethan consort music from its weal origin as presented in two manuscripts from the period. The following conditions governed the selection of the manuscripts: (1) they should contain a representative number of composers from the period; (2) they should picture, as clearly as possible, the evolution of Elizabethan instrumental ensemble music; and (3) they should contain a sufficient number of works in one instrumental form so that a valid analysis of that form could be concluded. The two manuscripts chosen on the basis of the forementioned conditions were British Museum Additional Manuscript 31,390 and Bodleian Library Manuscripts D. 212-216. Together they contained almost two hundred vocal and instrumental compositions by both Continental and English composers from the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Approximately half the contents of the two sources were In Nominee, an English instrumental form based on a cantus firmus from the Benedictus of Taverner's "Missa Gloria tibi Trinitas" [TRUNCATED]

"The Gradual" at Oregon State University: A Rough Guide to Assessing the Identity of a Late Roman Catholic Chant Book

In the 1930s, Oregon State University received an impressive oversized manuscript, now known as "The Gradual," as part of a large donation of books. Not much was known about this manuscript. It does not have documentation attached from the time of its acquisition, nor had any methodical study been undertaken regarding the manuscript. This thesis examines the OSU Gradual, aiming to provide research tools for the identification of musical manuscripts of unknown or unclear provenance that could be useful to conservators, archivists, and librarians, irrespective of musical training. It is conceived as a "rough guide" for working situations where there is no dedicated manuscript specialist, in particular, a fulltime Latin paleographer or a chant scholar overseeing a massive collection. Instead, its "how-to" nature addresses curators and catalogers managing smaller manuscript collections as generalists, offering an interdisciplinary approach both beneficial and suitable to the aims of this study.

Eyes without light

"Eyes Without Light" is conceived and scored for symphonic orchestra. The title of this work reflects personal concerns regarding global environmental issues. The phrase "eyes without light", derived from the Gaelic term "sul gan solas", refers in this instance to the blind greed of multi-national industrial and political corporations which are responsible for the destruction of the earth's ecosystem (primarily the forests and oceans). This work, influenced by the 19th-century symphonic poem initiated by Beethoven, Berlioz and Liszt, is programmatic in nature. The busy, confrontational destructiveness of mankind is represented by repeated or moving sixteenth notes at the beginning and end of the piece. These sections utilize varying densities of semitone clusters and are predominantly dissonant. The calmness and balance of the planet earth is represented by the middle section of the work, which consists primarily of slow-moving sustained lines. These sustained lines move to a sonority which is the structural focal point of the work (m 129-131). This sonority is resolved in the final measures. Both the focal point sonority and its resolution are constructed of P5 and P4 intervals. The aggressive destructiveness of mankind is emphasized by the repeated dissonant chords in the concluding measures (m 140-147, m 151-157) of the section. / Arts, Faculty of / Music, School of / Graduate

The Chapel Royal partbooks in eighteenth-century England

This thesis provides a comprehensive source study of the eighteenth-century Chapel Royal partbooks (London, British Library R.M.27.a–d). The 56 manuscript volumes in this collection, which are now catalogued into four groups (or ‘sets’), were used in the daily choral services at St James’s Palace during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The sources have a complex history since they have an ‘organic’ quality whereby the books continued to be copied into and altered whilst they were in regular use. The first part of the thesis (chapters two to six) examines the physical characteristics of the manuscripts by considering the books’ construction, the traits of the copyists, and the way material was gradually added. Paper and scribal analysis, as well as general cataloguing work, are used to identify the contents and explore the layers of copying. The second part of the thesis (chapters seven and eight) looks at the function of the books and considers the collection within its eighteenth-century context. Documentary sources are considered alongside various elements of the books to establish how the partbooks were used in performance. The Chapel’s method of partbook organisation is then compared with the organisation of similar collections at other choral foundations (including those with which the Chapel had strong connections).
