The Effects of Virtual Nature Exposure on State Social Motivation

Social health is an important predictor of overall health. Yet, it is an often neglected area of research. Strikingly, social connectedness is associated with a 50% reduction in risk of early death. While a plethora of research evidence supports the beneficial impact of nature exposure on physical and mental health, literature regarding the beneficial impact of nature exposure on social health is scant. In fact, no research to date has investigated the causal influence of nature exposure on social motivation, a construct comprised here of three measures (State Motivation to Foster Social Connections, State Positive Affect, and State Anxiety). The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to examine the effects of virtual nature exposure on state social motivation, and 2) to investigate adverse childhood experiences as a moderator of those effects. In this online study, adult participants (N = 444) aged 18 to 58 were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental video conditions (wilderness nature exposure, urban non-nature exposure, indoor non-nature exposure). After watching a 15-minute video, participants completed measures related to state social motivation. Results revealed a significant main effect of nature exposure on state social motivation. However, the effects of nature exposure on state social motivation were not significantly moderated by adverse childhood experiences. Results suggest that nature exposure may have a positive impact on the development and maintenance of social connections and should be explored further as a social health intervention aimed at improving overall health.

The Comparative Effects of Three Virtual Nature Exposure Methods on State Social Motivation: A Randomized Controlled Trial

It is well established in the research literature that exposure to nature positively affects physical and mental health. However, research regarding the effects of nature exposure on social health is less developed. Prior research found that watching a video of nature improved state social motivation. Building on this research, the current study compared the effects of three methods of virtual nature exposure on state social motivation in a randomized controlled trial. In this 3X3 between-subjects experiment, participants (N = 426) 18 to 73 (MAge = 27.69, SD = 12.19) were randomly assigned to experience 3-minutes of nature exposure (wilderness nature, urban non-nature control, indoor non-nature control) through one of three methods (video, photo, guided imagery) and then completed survey questions related to state social motivation (State Motivation to Foster Social Connections (SMSC), State Positive Affect (SA), State Anxiety (SA)). Three two-way 3 X 3 ANOVAs revealed a statistically significant interaction between type of exposure and method of exposure on PA, F(4, 417) = 4.125, p = .003, partial η2 = .038, and no significant interactions for SMSC or SA. Compared to virtual non-nature controls, results suggest that one aspect of state social motivation, PA, is greater after exposure to a nature photo, but not after exposure to a nature video or nature guided imagery. Nature exposure may have a favorable impact on the creation and maintenance of social ties, according to these findings, and should be investigated further as a social health intervention aimed at enhancing overall health.

Nature in VR: A Multisensory Perspective of Artificial Nature Exposure

A virtual environment can offer a highly immersive experience with a feeling of presence similar to the physical world. Nevertheless, it still lacks several multisensory and emotional properties to fully substitute or replicate the physical world's richness and complexity. Accordingly, this study examines how multisensory integration relates to the immersive and restorative outcomes in an artificial nature paradigm. Our experiment collected behavioral and physiological data through self-report questionnaires and heart rate variability assessment from 30 participants. Notably, due to unforeseen technicalities, the heart rate data was not analyzed. Participants were divided into three conditions comparing audio and visual stimuli.Two conditions were unisensory (visual and auditory), and one was multisensory (audio-visual). We found no statistically significant difference in the level of immersion between unisensory and multisensory conditions, supporting the inconsistency and need formore research regarding the relationship between multisensory integration and immersion. Inrelation to restorativeness, we found a significant difference between audio-visual and audioconditions. Additionally, the medium to strong effect size indicates that visual stimuli substantially influence restorative effects more than audio stimuli. Collectively, in line with previous research, we observed a positive effect on restorativeness from spending time in artificial nature. Despite some limitations, our findings provide guidance for future researchers and contribute to the understanding of immersive multisensory VR experiences and their potential to promote mental rejuvenation and optimize restoration.
