Embedded metallic grating and photonic crystal based scanning probes for subwavelength near-field light confinement

Near-field light confinement on scanning probe is the backbone technology for near-field imaging with subwavelength resolution that overcomes the diffraction limit by exploiting the properties of evanescent waves. The fusion of the photonics and the latest nanofabrication technology creates emerging frontier for near-field light confinement research with new design approach. The propagation of light can now be controlled by periodical structure at subwavelength scale with low loss in the artificially synthesized dielectric material. New light propagation patterns can now be implemented in subwavelength structure, such as directional free space light focus grating coupler, photonic bandgap material like photonic crystal by permitting light propagation at certain wavelength while prohibiting light outside of bandgap, and nano-slot light resonator for increased light-matter interaction at nanometer scale. Advances in this research area will have tremendous impact on electromagnetic modeling and biomedical technology for probe based subwavelength optical detection. My doctoral research focused on investigating highly efficient, nanofabrication compatible directional light coupling structure and near-field subwavelength light focus through photonic crystal material. The distinct significance of this research was placed on exploitation of the embedded metallic grating coupler of high free space directivity and subwavelength light processing circuit of enhanced near-field transmission rate, the two most dominating basic elements of the scanning optical imaging system. First, I designed a compact elliptical grating coupler based on embedded noble metal such as gold or silver that efficiently interconnects free space with dielectric rectangular waveguide. The dense system integration capability shows the application potential for on-chip interfacing subwavelength light processing circuits and near-field fluorescent biosensors with far-field detection of superb radiation directivity and coupling efficiency. Second, a novel all-dielectric light confinement probe designed by slotted photonic crystal waveguide provides a light confinement mechanism on the lateral plane. The resonating nano-cavities and the λ/4 nano-slot are used to enlarge the light throughput while as the nano-slot waveguide provides single subwavelength center lobe. The impetus of this research is the growing interests by near-field imaging researchers to obtain a low loss visible light confinement probe designs through mass production. / text

The fabrication of specialized probes for surface metrology

This dissertation will demonstrate the synergy of nanoscopic materials and surface metrology methods by the fabrication and implementation of CNT atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips, CNT scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tips, Pt spike AFM tips, and Pt spike near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) tips for the methods of critical dimension metrology, STM, AFM phase imaging, scanning surface potential AFM (SSPM), NSOM, and three-dimensional AFM. Chapter 1 provides a general overview of the information that will be discussed in this dissertation. Chapter 2 describes two methods for the simultaneous fabrication of carbon nanotube atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy probes. The fabrication of these high resolution probes, as well as their imaging characteristics, is described in detail. Resolution standards were used to characterize their behavior and resolution limits. In Chapter 3, the effect of high aspect ratio probe length on AFM phase imaging is studied by fabricating highly controllable Pt spike AFM tips. By monitoring phase shifts on homogenous surfaces as a function of Pt spike length, it is shown that attractive forces at the tip are significantly reduced when high aspect ratio structures are added to conventional AFM probes. In Chapter 4, the effect of probe geometry on scanning surface potential microscopy (SSPM) is described. By studying the effect of scan height in SSPM, it was found that large surface area probe geometries, such as conventional Pt coated AFM tips, have lower surface potential resolution because of contributions from the sides of the tip as well as the cantilever. Spatial resolution standards were probed to evaluate the effect of probe geometry on SSPM sensitivity and resolution. Chapter 5 describes the fabrication of specialized probes for three-dimensional atomic force microscopy, scanning near-field optical microscopy, and scanning electrochemical -- atomic force microscopy (SECM-AFM). Using techniques described in Chapters 2-4, high aspect ratio structures were added to conventional probes used in 3D AFM, NSOM and SECM-AFM to solve limitations inherent to current probe designs for each method. Preliminary data indicates that each probe will have a significant beneficial effect on the resolution limit of its technique.

Legal Anthropology On The Battlefield| Cultural Competence In U.S. Rule Of Law Programs In Iraq

<p> This research is the first exploratory survey of rule of law officials in Iraq. Prior to this research, little has been done to examine whether U.S. rule of law efforts in Iraq were informed by a proper knowledge of the culture and criminal justice systems of Iraq and whether the U.S. learned lessons over time. </p><p> This research demonstrates that understanding of the indigenous legal and social culture is critical to the success of rule of law programs, that there are distinctive characteristics of the legal culture in Iraq, and that the rule of law programs of the U.S. in Iraq were not informed by an adequate understanding of the culture of Iraq. The author concludes that a new paradigm &ndash; Enablement Plus &ndash; is necessary if the U.S. is to improve the chances of success for rule of law programs during and immediately after conflict.</p>

The Spatial Politics of Turkey's Justice and Development Party (AK Party): On Erdoganian Neo-Ottomanism

My dissertation analyzes the architectural voice of the Islamic bourgeoisie by evaluating contemporary government-funded urban renewal projects in Turkey. This topic also discusses the counter voices' response to the urban renewal programs which sparked the Gezi Park protests of summer 2013. My dissertation explores how the AK Party is framing Ottoman history and remaking the Turkish urban landscape by urban development projects. I spell out specific ways in which Erdogan uses cultural capital of the Ottoman past to frame Erdoganian Neo-Ottomanism. My work investigates the AK Party's Islamic form of neoliberalism with Pierre Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital. Specifically I look at the application of Istanbul as the European Capital of Culture (ECoC), an urban renewal project by the AK Party in the Ankara neighborhood of Hamamonu, and the protests at Istanbul's Gezi Park and Ankara's Ulucanlar prison complex.

Enemy Images and Iraqi Ba'thist Nationalism: Anti-Persian Discourse in Historical Narrative Construction

During the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988, the Iraqi Baʿth party engaged in the production of historical narrative, which defined the party's ideal of Iraqi nationality and statehood, while promoting the legitimacy of its military efforts. Public intellectuals played an important role in the manufacture of such historical narrative. This thesis examines two works produced in the service of this project, Al-Ṣirāʿal-ʿIrāqiyy Fārisiyy, or "The Iraqi-Persian Conflict," and Tārīkh al-Munāzaʿāt wa-l-Ḥurūb Bayn al-ʿIrāq waʾĪrān, or "The History of the Conflicts and Wars Between Iraq and Iran." It will be demonstrated that these works reflected, and rarified a wartime nationalist discourse permeating the public sphere, in which an ideal of Iraqi nationality and statehood was defined through the demonization of an essentialist Persian other. Pre-Islamic and medieval Islamic history was employed to emphasize episodes of violence and cultural conflict between Iraqis and Iranians, in doing so illustrating the characteristics of both peoples. Iraqi nationality was defined as embodying superlative qualities of governance, military prowess, cultural achievement, and religiosity. Iraqi nationhood was defined and elevated in contrast to an opposite, malicious Persian nationality, rooted in anti-Arab hostility and characterized by inferiority in piety, culture, leadership, and warfare. Direct parallels existed between this nationalist narrative, and public sphere expressions of Baʿthist nationalist discourse, such as government statements, school textbooks, and monument construction.

Influence of Genome-Specific Granule-Bound Starch Synthase I (GBSSI/Waxy) on Starch Composition, Structure and In Vitro Enzymatic Hydrolysis in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Wheat grain quality and consumption is influenced by its constituents structure and concentrations. In the first part of the dissertation, six Canadian bread wheat cultivars; four (CDC Teal, AC Superb, AC Barrie, AC Splendor) belonging to the Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS), and two (AC Foremost, and AC Crystal) to the Canada Prairie Spring Red (CPSR) market classes were characterized for the relationship between their starch constituents and starch in vitro enzymatic hydrolysis. CPSR cultivars with relatively longer amylopectin chains of DP 37-45, reduced chain lengths of DP 15-18, and a low volume percent of small C-type starch granules, had reduced starch in vitro enzymatic hydrolysis rates. In the second part of the dissertation, near-isogenic wheat lines differing at the Waxy locus were analyzed for the influence of genome-specific granule-bound starch synthase I (GBSSI/Waxy; Wx-A, Wx-B, Wx-D) on starch composition, structure and starch in vitro enzymatic hydrolysis. Amylose concentration was more severely affected in genotypes with GBSSI missing from two genomes (double nulls) than from one genome (single nulls) of wheat, indicating dosage dependent amylose synthesis. Subtle differences in amylopectin chain length distribution were observed among non-waxy, partial and completely waxy starches, suggesting a non-limiting role of genome-specific GBSSI for amylopectin synthesis. A suppressive role of Wx-D on the short chain phenotype of wheat amylopectin was observed. In addition, Wx-D increased the volume percentage of large A-type starch granules and reduced starch hydrolysis index. Thus, among the waxy isoproteins, Wx-D might be the major contributor for reducing the rate of in vitro starch enzymatic hydrolysis in wheat. In the third part of the dissertation, endosperm starch’s physicochemical properties and structure during grain development in wheat waxy-null genotypes were analyzed. The study was conducted with pure starch isolated from wheat grains at 3-30 days post anthesis (DPA), at three day intervals. Changes in amylopectin structure were observed until 12 DPA, suggesting the formation of a basic amylopectin skeleton by this stage. A differential influence of waxy isoproteins on amylopectin structure formation has been suggested, with Wx-B and Wx-D affecting short glucan chains of DP 6-8 at 3 and 6 DPA, Wx-A being effective at 9 and 12 DPA, and Wx-D affecting DP 18-25 chains from 18-30 DPA.

Traditional Iranian Music in Irangeles: An Ethnographic Study in Southern California

This study focuses on the musical activities and views of Iranian immigrant artists who perform, teach, and support traditional Iranian music in Los Angeles and Southern California. This geographic area and its interconnected social networks, which I refer to as Irangeles, is part of a diaspora culture industry where music is central to everyday life, but where modern Iranian pop music dominates. Given Iran's historical negative stigma attached to entertainment-oriented music making, and the popularity of entertainment and dance-driven Persian pop in contemporary Irangeles, practitioners of traditional Iranian music express frustration and face challenges in promoting their art, what they feel is an authentic form of Iranian culture. The music they make expresses both personal and cultural values: it is a form of creative expression that presents itself as interwoven with their Iranian identity, reflecting personal and cultural ideals of character in Iranian culture. My findings highlight how Iranian immigrant artists avail themselves of the socio-cultural infrastructure of Irangeles to network with like-minded artists and strategically use satellite TV, online technology and social media to find recognition for, teach, and promote diverse genres of traditional Iranian music in this particular diaspora setting.
