Competencies Needed for Careers in Ornamental Horticulture in Utah

The purpose of the study was to present descriptive data bout the industry, determine the importance of the competencies needed for job entry, and assess the manpower needs of the ornamental horticulture industry in Utah. The identified population of 576 ornamental horticulture enterprises was categorized into seven areas of specialization: Arborists (4.5%), Maintenance of Landscapes (10.8%), Landscape Construction (18.6%), Golf Courses (13.5%), Greenhouse Production (5.4%), Florist-Plant Shops (30.9%) and Garden Center-Nurseries (16.3%). The data were collected by a survey-questionnaire. One hundred and sixteen ornamental horticulture enterprises responded to the survey. This amounted to 38% of the industry sampled and 20% of the population. Findings of the study indicated that single enterprises conduct work in a number of the areas of specialization. Ninety-two of the ninety-four competencies were rated at least of some importance to entry level workers. The most important competencies common to all the areas of specialization were: Human relations and communications, pest identification and control, record keeping, and safety. Other highly rated individual competencies in the major areas of specialization included: 1) Arborists--mix and handle chemicals safely, turf establishment and maintenance, removal of trees and shrubs, and pruning techniques; 2) Maintenance of Landscapes--mix and handle chemicals safely, apply fertilizer materials, operate and maintain spray equipment, maintain turf and operate and service automatic systems; 3) Landscape Construction--plant and transplant, turf establishment and maintenance and sell products and services; 4) Golf Courses-apply fertilizer materials, maintain golf greens and turf and apply knowledge of irrigation and watering methods; 5) Greenhouse Production-apply knowledge of irrigation and water ing methods; sell products and services, and operate a cash register and handle money; 6) Florist-Plant Shops--design and construct floral pieces, dish gardens, and terrariums, operate a cash register and handle money and design displays; 7) Garden Center Nurseries--operate a cash register and handle money, sell products and services, and select plant materials according to growth habits and uses. The number of employees anticipated in the future is growing at a 16% yearly rate. The greatest anticipated yearly expansion of full time employees in the areas of Landscape Construction (63%), Arboriculture (35%) and Greenhouse Production (32%). Members of owners' families comprise 17% of the industry's employees. The study also indicated a preference for workers presenting specific job competencies at job entry.

An Assessment of the Apparel Industry in the State of Utah and Needed Training in Vocational Clothing in Utah High School

The purpose of this study was to make an assessment of the industry and needed qualifications of sewing machine operators in the apparel industry in the State of Utah. Feedback received may serve as guidelines in curriculum development for vocational clothing classes. Information was gathered by means of a questionnaire administered to plant or personnel managers. The questionnaire was hand carried or mailed to fifty-six plants across the state. Ninety-eight percent of the plants responded and were used in the statistics. The questionnaire ellicited information on the following items: 1. The following points about Utah's apparel industry : a. Availability of jobs b. Geographic locations of plants and jobs statewide c. Types of positions available d. Training and/or skills e. Machines and equipment used f. Types of garments manufactured 2. Information for training programs: a. Types of training present employees have received b. Identified skills to be included in high school programs c. Identified equipment needed in high school programs 3. The work activities of an entry level operator: a. Ability to use machines b. Skills in handling machines and fabric c. Construction methods used The study identified the machines used most often and the work activities needed for employment in the apparel industry. It is suggested that teachers and the industry cooperate with each other so that needs and practices of both can be of service one to another in the training of future employees .

This thesis deals with detection and analysis of a time needed for getting an all-round view before entering other vehicle's corridor during different conditions and speed. In the theoretical part a brief research is made concerning the subject of causes of accidents, aspects of human perception and driver's outlook. The analytical part derives from video recordings of on-road trials. The results was processed and the obtained data evaluated in order to find out the time needed for getting an all-round and making a decision while situated in the intersection. Above that, the data served as a determination of safety during intersection passing and quality of estimates of speed and distance of incoming vehicles. The conclusion of the analytical part is dedicated to participants mutual comparison and analysis of particular situations that occurred during the trials.

This work deals with failure to provide assistance. This is a very complex and extensive topic related to everyday life each of us. Often there are issues regarding the interpretation of certain concepts. Addressing these questions provides case law. The most contentious issues occur in relation to the areas of health . Failure to provide assistance is not just a matter of law , but relates to many other social sciences and disciplines . Although the failure to provide assistance in this work mainly deal with in terms of criminal law, I outlined a lot of problems incorrectly . Typically it is the ignorance of first aid and, unfortunately, more often by human indifference. Therefore, I consider that the solution to the problem lies more in each of us than in the hands of lawmakers.

A Qualitative Investigation into the Trauma Exhibited by First Responders Tackling the Opioid Epidemic in Tennessee

Recent increases in opioid overdose rates have changed the role of first responders on the front lines of this national crisis. The present study used a semi-structured qualitative interview to investigate how the increase in opioids, opioid-related harm, and opioid-related death within Tennessee has affected the first responder population. Law enforcement officers, firefighters, and paramedics (N = 30) from rural-serving counties in Tennessee completed a semi-structured interview. Eight themes emerged from the interviews: (1) mental health symptoms, including posttraumatic stress disorder and secondary traumatic stress symptoms; (2) coping behaviors; (3) available resources; (4) barriers to accessing resources; (5) recommendations for what is needed; (6) hardest circumstances; (7) discrepant thoughts and feelings; (8) perception of role in reducing the impact of the epidemic. This study provides novel insights into the impact of the opioid epidemic on Tennessee first responders, and can inform future efforts to reduce adverse outcomes in these care providers.

Thesis. The study focuses on the reflection of the meanings produced in the access to justice of beneficiaries of the civil legal aid services provided by the Public Defenders Office. It takes into consideration the social representations related to the experience of access to justice of the aforementioned beneficiaries. The collection of qualitative data base was driven by social representations theory and technique of content analysis. Combining empirical research with theoretical assumptions rooted mainly in Human Rights and the Theory of Recognition, the study aims at investigating the extent to which the Public Defenders Office is perceived as an institution that provides access to justice.

Minimum Competencies Needed for Graduation: A Comparative Case Study of Perceptions Held by Professional Educators and the Local School Community

The problem of this study is a comparison of minimum competencies needed for high school graduation as perceived by local professional educators to those perceived by the local school community. The source of data is Community Survey of Essential Student Skills. This survey instrument is a rating of the importance of minimum competencies by 1,931 patrons in the local school community. A total number of 401 professional educators had previously rated these competencies. The following conclusions are based on the analysis of each hypothesis and observations during the study. 1. There is an increasing amount of emphasis in the literature that major perceptual differences exist between professional educators and school communities. Educators need to identify and act upon the perceptions of their patrons. Increased emphasis upon community involvement is supported by findings of this study. For example, the community could be involved in curriculum development for life skills. Patrons, students and parents could serve on advisory committees to school boards. 2. There is evidence that increased communication efforts are needed to narrow the gap between perceptions of educators and school communities. Educators perceived the reading and writing skills in this study as Essential but patrons did not. Better clarification to patrons relating to why and how skills are taught would be helpful. Otherwise, it will appear to patrons that schools are out of step with requirements for coping in today's society. 3. Inflation has increased the cost of education, and taxpayers are not willing to support a system that they feel may not be doing an effective job. While there is a large majority of the American public that still has confidence in schools as indicated by the 1978 Gallup Poll, there needs to be a bolstering of support. It behooves educators to set and monitor expectations of achievement, provide resources to meet needs of diverse students, inform and involve patrons and promote a caring, disciplined atmosphere in all classrooms.
