The office of Associate President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

In early Church history, several men were designated by the title of Assistant President, or Associate President, but only Oliver Cowdery, and later Hyrum Smith, held the actual office which is the subject of the present study. That office is properly titled Associate President. The office of Associate President fulfilled the requirements of the law of witnesses, and was a priesthood office. The Associate President assisted in bearing the keys of the last dispensation, and was acknowledged as the second ranking member of the First Presidency. The Associate President held the keys of the kingdom of God militant, and presided over the entire Church in the absence of the Prophet. It was the privilege and calling of the Associate President to act as a spokesman for the Prophet, in reflex of the same relationship that Aaron bore to Moses. Finally, the Associate President was appointed to succeed, by rank and by ordination, to the Presidency over the whole Church, in the event of the Prophet's death.

I was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was eight years old. You could say I was sort of born into it, as my father, mother, seven other siblings, and both sets of grandparents are all members as well. I grew up in a small, rural town in Southern Idaho where vegetation is almost as sparse as non-LDS families. As children we were never quite sure which denomination these families belonged to: that they were not Mormon was the only distinction we made. As I was growing up my parents saw to it that I attended the three-hour long Church services every Sunday, the weekly youth activities, and our local four-year seminary program. After completing high school, I chose to pursue my academic studies at two Church-owned and operated institutions of higher learning, first at Ricks College and then Brigham Young University. But it seemed that the pinnacle of my Church education would take place when my twenty first birthday finally enabled me to become a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The purpose of this research and study was to evaluate the use of selected Book of Mormon filmstrips and determine their value in teaching Book of Mormon history. New impetus to use filmstrips was received with the announcement that the Department of Seminaries and Institutes of Religion had produced eighteen filmstrips using episodes from Book of Mormon history. The Department was desirous that the filmstrips be utilized in the most effective way by teachers in meeting the individual needs of students in this course of religious instruction.

Socio-Political Factors Affecting the Growth of the Mormon Church in Argentina Since 1925

Since 1925 Mormon missionaries have proselyted in Catholic Argentina. Yet the Argentine mission has grown very slowly and encountered many difficulties. Did the missionaries' North American image affect the missionary work? Did the predominance of the Catholic Church stunt the growth of the new sect? How did the impact of bitter U.S.-Argentine international relations during the Second World War, and the advent of Peron affect the reception of Mormonism in Argentina? These questions concerning the history of the Mormon Church in Argentina since 1940 can best be understood by considering the episodes of Argentine history which bear directly on the history of the Church in that country. Hence, this thesis will offer a broader interpretation of the official history of the Argentine mission than that written by the mission secretaries and historians. Moreover, it will concentrate on the years between 1940 and 1968, which seems the most significant era since it embraces the Church's confrontation with the Second World War, Peron, and increasing membership.

A Survey to Determine the Public Responses and Attitudes Toward the First Festival of Mormon Art at Brigham Young University

A survey was conducted to determine the responses of the public to the First Festival of Mormon Art on exhibition at the Brigham Young University. Data were collected by means of questionnaires made available to gallery visitors. Through these responses it was determined that:(1) Over three-fourths of the visiting public felt that art is important in relation to the Gospel. There was a positive correlation between the respondents' interest and experience in art and their feelings for the importance of art in relation to the Gospel.(2) Over three-fourths of the visiting public felt that the exhibition was successful. The respondents less qualified and less interested in art tended to rate the show both more positively and more negatively than those more qualified and more interested in art.(3) Slightly more than half of the visiting public felt that the written statements placed next to some of the works were helpful in appreciating or understanding the works.(4) The illustrative works tended to be less popular generally than some of the less illustrative or abstract works.

A Study of Divorced Mormon Women in Salt Lake County: The Extent to Which they Use the Agencies and Institutions Available to Help Meet Personal, Financial, and Employment Needs

The purpose of this study was to (a) describe the characteristics of divorced Mormon women residing in Salt Lake County, (b) determine the extent to which these women were aware of and used government, private, and Mormon church agencies after divorce in helping them solve their problems, and (c) determine the extent these women felt each agency was effective.Responses from the questionnaire indicated that more than half of these women could be categorized as displaced homemakers. Results showed significant decreases in income before and after divorce. The women in this study had higher than national average occupational levels and income levels. The results of this study showed that these women used the Mormon church and its agencies significantly more often than government and private agencies and institutions. Furthermore, they also felt these Church agencies provided a significant amount of help with problems of personal adjustment, children's problems, and family management.

The hymnal of the Latter-day Saints first proposed only shortly after the organization of the Church and published continually every few years between 1835 and 1871, is a remarkably accurate indicator of the changing fortunes and beliefs of the early Saints. The first hymnal, gathered by Emma Smith, uncompromisingly sets forth the basic Mormon belief in man's free agency, his innate perfectability, and his kinship to his Heavenly Father. Later editions reflect the missionary concerns of the church (1840), the tremendous persecution the saints are subjected to (1841), the Church difficulties after the martyrdom of Joseph Smith (1849), the call to gather in the Zion of Deseret (1851), the promulgation of newly evolving Church doctrines (1856), the dissension arising between some Church members (1863), and the Church's dedication to Jesus Christ (1871). Indeed, the hymnal stands as a record of a people's journey from innocence to experience. From a literary viewpoint, the hymnal has its shortcomings, and is often considered to be too didactic and too enthusiastic. While this may be true, several hymnists, notably W. W. Phelps, Parley P. Pratt, and Eliza Snow have created excellent hymns.

In researching the literary and visual art forms of four Utah Mormon artists/authors, considerable evidence supports the prognosis that natural parallels do exist between the written and visual works of artists/authors. Recent as well as past historical data also confirms this hypothesis.To implement research personal interviews and written questionnaires were submitted. The resultant data compiled supports the prognosis that this parallelism does exist.
