Distance-dependent survival and distribution of juvenile corals: Janzen-Connell effects do not operate on two brooding Indo-Pacific coralsGibbs, David A. 27 August 2014 (has links)
The Janzen-Connell hypothesis proposes that species-specific enemies promote species coexistence through distance- and density-dependent survival of offspring near conspecific adults. I tested this hypothesis experimentally by transplanting juvenile-sized fragments of two species of brooding corals varying distances from conspecific adults, and observationally by assessing the spatial distribution of those two species in the field. Small fragments (as proxies for ?6 month old juveniles) of Pocillopora damicornis and Seriatopora hystrix were transplanted 3, 12, 24 and 182 cm upstream and downstream (relative to the prevailing current) of conspecific adults and their survivorship and condition (bitten off, overgrown by algae, or bleached) checked every 1-2 d. I also characterized the spatial distribution of P. damicornis and S. hystrix within replicated plots on three Fijian reef flats and measured densities of small colonies within 2 m of larger colonies of each species.
Contrary to the Janzen-Connell hypothesis, juvenile-sized transplants exhibited no differences in survivorship as a function of distance from adult P. damicornis or S. hystrix and P. damicornis and S. hystrix were aggregated rather than overdispersed on natural reefs. Survival unaffected by distance from focal colonies as well as certain recruitment processes could generate the observed aggregation. I did observe predation of P. damicornis that was spatially patchy and temporally persistent due to feeding by the territorial triggerfish Balistapus undulatus. This patchy predation did not occur for S. hystrix. Thus, I found no support for the Janzen-Connell hypothesis, but did document hot-spots of species-specific corallivory that could create variable selective regimes on an otherwise more uniform environment, and help maintain the high diversity of corals typical of Indo-Pacific reefs.

Addressing the risks of invasive plants through spatial predictive modellingLindgren, Cory John January 2012 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to extend the use of spatial predictive modelling for use by biosecurity agencies to help prevent the introductions of new and emerging invasive plants (i.e., pests). A critical review of international and national policy instruments found that they did not effectively articulate how spatial predictive modelling could be incorporated into the biosecurity toolbox. To determine how spatial predictive modelling could be extended I modelled the potential distribution of Tamarix and Lythrum salicaria in Prairie Canada using a genetic algorithm. New seasonal growth data was used to interpolate a growing degree-day’s risk surface for L. salicaria. Models were developed using suites of predictive variables as well as different data partitioning methods and evaluated using different performance measures. Expert evaluation was found to important in final model selection. The results indicated that both invasive plants have yet to reach their potential distribution in Prairie Canada. The spatial models can be used to direct risk-based surveillance efforts and to support biosecurity policy decisions. The results of this dissertation conclude that spatial predictive modelling is an informative tool that needs to be incorporated into the biosecurity toolbox. A phytosanitary standard is proposed to guide toolbox development.

The purposes of the study was to evaluate an effect of increasing balance task demands and visual tracking task demands, on stability and visual tracking performances, with possibility of any interaction among them. Twenty healthy participants were asked to perform various visual tracking tasks, with different attentional demands, while standing on various support surfaces. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measure design was performed to estimate significant effect. Support surface properties showed significant effects on stability measures but no significant effect on visual tracking performances were noticed. Significant effect of increasing visual tracking task demands on visual tracking performances were found. However, increasing visual tracking task demand did not show any significant effect on stability measures. Significant interaction effect was also found between surface properties and visual tracking task demands for stability measures. In conclusion, increasing balance demands effect stability and increasing visual tracking demands effect visual tracking performances.

Working memory and human reasoning : an individual differences approachCapon, Alison Jayne January 2000 (has links)
Experiments 1-3 investigated the relationship between working memory and syllogistic and five-ten-n series spatial inference. A secondary aim was to replicate the findings of Shah and Miyake (1996) who suggested the use of separate central resources of working memory for spatial and verbal ability. The correlational analysis showed that the complex verbal and spatial working memory span tasks were associated together and consistently predicted reasoning performance in both verbal and visual modalities. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that three factors best accounted for the data -a verbal, a spatial, and a general resource. All the span tasks and most of the reasoning tasks significantly and consistently loaded the general factor. Experiments 4-6 investigated the relationship between working memory and a range of reasoning tasks - identified as either propositional. spatial, or quantifiable tasks. These experiments were based on the work of Stanovich and West (1998) who found that a range of reasoning tasks were predicted by cognitive ability and a reasoner's thinking style. The correlational anaylsis showed that the complex verbal and spatial working memory span tasks were associated together and consistently predicted reasoning perforinance. Two clusters of reasoning task emerged from the correlational analysis - one cluster related to the propositional and simple spatial reasoning tasks, whilst the other related to the quantifiable and complex spatial reasoning tasks. The confin-natory factor analysis showed that four factors best accounted for the data -a verbal, a spatial, a general, and a thinking style resource. All the span tasks and the reasoning tasks loaded the general factor, and most of the reasoning tasks further loaded the thinking disposition factor. These results are discussed in light of models of workino memory, theories of reasoning, and how to best characterise factor 3 (executive function) and factor 4 (thinking style) from tile factor analysis.

In psychoanalytic literature, psychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott defines 'potential space' as the space between 'inner world' - creation of the unconscious fantasy, a private replica of the world and objects around us - and 'outer world' - the actual world, objects and people around us - where intimate relationships and creativity occur. Converged around spatial design and psychological concepts, and developing an understanding of the importance between both, I intend to explore the possibility of bringing the 'potential space' notion into the constructed environment. Highlighting, thus, the human condition of architecture where the designer is not a separate entity from the built environment but an intimate part of it through the design process. This investigation concerns how a psychoanalytic approach can be used to establish a background research which provides a foundation from which new ways of understanding one's own design processes can be launched: a way of moving towards the design practice through a 'self' inner sense.
