Comparison of Microbial Water Quality Parameters of Four Geographically Similar Creeks in Northeast Tennessee

Four creeks within the Watauga River watershed in Northeast Tennessee are routinely monitored for water quality assessments. To identify sources and monitor remediation, Sinking Creek, Cash Hollow Creek, Buffalo Creek and Boones Creek are monitored for chemical and microbial parameters. These parameters include phosphates, nitrates, BOD and fecal coliforms. Sinking Creek is a tributary of the Watauga River with 10 miles of impaired water. Cash Hollow Creek enters the Watauga River at river mile 11.4 with 3.4 miles of impaired water. Boones Creek contains 18.6 impaired miles while the status of water quality in Buffalo Creek is not yet determined. Agricultural input is a major source of pollution for Sinking and Boones Creek. Cash Hollow Creek is impacted by a combination of sources of which urban runoff is the largest due to storm sewers and land development. Boones, Cash Hollow and Sinking Creeks are considered impaired and are on the state’s 303(d) list due to pathogen loading but only Sinking and Cash Hollow Creek have TMDLs. The seasonal and spatial patterns are more obvious for microbial than for chemical parameters. From 2002 - 2005, 14 stations on Sinking Creek were sampled quarterly. Fecal coliforms were elevated and always greater than 200 CFU/100ml for stations 1 – 5. Due to agricultural land use adjacent to stations 1 – 4, this would be expected. There was also a seasonal trend with higher concentrations found in the fall and spring. Cash Hollow Creek’s 9 stations were sampled monthly from 2002 - 2005. Although very high fecal coliforms concentrations were found, there were no obvious patterns. The 12 stations on Buffalo Creek were sampled quarterly from June 2004 to June 2005. Fecal coliform concentrations were high at station 8, which is adjacent to agricultural land. Boones Creek was sampled monthly from March 2005 to present and no obvious trends have been noted. The objective of this research is to compare patterns in these geographically similar creeks to identify any common patterns associated with various pollution sources. We will discuss the preliminary results and conclusions about the usefulness of these data to accomplish this objective.

Evaluation of Karst Spring Water Quality Using Water Quality Indices in Northeast Tennessee

Ensuring access to safe drinking water to protect public health in many communities underserved or unserved by centralized water systems in the US requires regular water quality testing and reporting. Following testing, access to easy-to-comprehend water quality information may be challenging. Households served by water utilities have access to water quality information. However, households depending on unregulated water systems like wells and springs are often unaware of their water quality. Therefore, this study utilized multiple water quality parameters to determine the quality of karst spring water using two Water Quality Index (WQI) methods. In-situ measurements of physico-chemical parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, conductivity, specific conductance, total dissolved solids, oxidation reduction potential were taken at 50 karst springs in east Tennessee during Summer 2021. Water samples were analyzed for microbial (fecal coliform, and E. coli), nutrients (nitrate and nitrite), and radiological (radon) constituents using standard analytical methods. Springs generally met federal and state water quality safe limits for physicochemical parameters, but 100% of water samples contained fecal coliform and 90% contained E. coli revealing widespread fecal contamination; 60% of springs exceeded radon concentrations of 300 pCi/L. WQI method 1 (Brown et al. 1972) rated 12 % of springs as very poor water quality and 88% as unfit for drinking. WQI method 2 (NSFWQI) rated 4% of the sampled springs as good, 92% as moderate and 4 % as bad. Water treatment procedures for microbial pollution purification are advised before the studied springs are used as a drinking water source.

Water Quality Assessment of Karst Spring Water as a Private Water Supply Source in Northeast Tennessee

Karst springs are an essential source of private water supply for about 10% of households in Tennessee. However, these springs, which can be easily polluted, are unregulated. This study, therefore, assesses water quality spatial patterns and water quality rating of roadside springs in northeast Tennessee. Karst spring water samples collected from 50 springs were assessed using EPA Standard methods for pathogens, nutrients, radon, and physicochemical parameters. Springs generally met federal and state standards for physicochemical parameters, 90% of samples contained E. coli, and all samples contained fecal coliform. High E. coli was spatially clustered causing a fecal contamination hot spot on the border of Washington and Sullivan Counties, Tennessee. 60% of springs exceeded radon concentrations of 300 pCi/L. Water quality ratings were very poor or unfit for drinking, with 4% of springs ranked “good”. Therefore, microbial pollution purification procedures are advised before using these springs as a drinking water source.

‘The Most Important Thing is the Music:’ Ralph Blizard’s Legacy Preserving Traditional Appalachian Old-Time Music

This thesis uses qualitative research methods to elaborate on Ralph Blizard’s legacy in the old-time music community. The aspects of Blizard’s legacy that were examined include his style of fiddling and the actions he took to preserve traditional Appalachian old-time music. This thesis discusses the old-time music revival in the late 20th Century and Blizard’s role in the revival. This thesis used documentary research, archival research, and personal interviews. Documentary and archival research took place at the Ralph Blizard Museum in Blountville, Tennessee, and the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University. I conducted personal interviews with Blizard’s musical colleagues and members of his family. This thesis shows that Blizard’s legacy in old-time music is defined the actions he took to help preserve the sound of traditional Appalachian old-time music just as much as it is defined by his style of fiddling.
