Role Strain and Faculty Attrition in Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs In Nursing

Goe, L. Joan 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study is faculty attrition and role strain reported by faculty members in baccalaureate and higher degree programs in nursing. The purpose of the study is to determine whether variations exist in role strain reported by faculty members and faculty attrition based on institutional size, structure, and complexity, and on official expectations for faculty members. A questionnaire eliciting information regarding faculty attrition was mailed to seventy-five randomly selected administrators of baccalaureate and higher degree programs. Data related to faculty role strain were collected by questionnaires mailed to two hundred fifty randomly-selected faculty members from participating schools. Sixty-three administrative questionnaires and one hundred ninety-five faculty questionnaires were returned in usable form and were included in the analysis of data.

Exploring Nursing Students' Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Academic Integrity: Student Perceptions of Faculty Support

Flannigan, Kathryn January 2021 (has links)
Maintaining high levels of academic integrity in nursing programs is critical to student success and the transition to professional practice. Integrity encompasses the values of trustworthiness and honesty. Nursing faculty need to determine if they are providing students with the resources and communication needed to maintain a culture of integrity. It is important for faculty to determine if students tend to rationalize or neutralize the psychological effects of dishonest behaviors. Finally, it is important to determine methods to eliminate violations of academic integrity in nursing education. The overall design of the dissertation provides three distinct articles designed to stand alone as potential articles for publication. This dissertation is a part of a larger collaborative effort with two other Teachers College Doctoral students. The methods and procedures are the same for all principal investigators. Chapters I through III and Chapter V are all uniquely my own. Chapter IV represents the collaborative effort presented in this dissertation. In a cross-sectional, quantitative study design, McCabe’s Academic Integrity Survey- Modified for Nursing Students (MAIS-MNS), a Knowledge Assessment of Academic Integrity, and a Demographics Questionnaire were completed by 442 pre-licensure nursing students. In the individual portion of this study, the relationships between perceived faculty support of academic integrity policies; perceived faculty response to cheating; neutralization; and age are examined to determine if relationships exist between the variables. Additionally, in the collaborative chapter, the variables of severity and perceived faculty support of academic integrity policies were compared to the willingness to report peer violations and program-wide strategies to improve a culture of integrity. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 27 (IBM Inc., Armonk, NY, USA). Results indicated students who have higher perceived faculty support of academic integrity policies are less likely to rationalize academically dishonest behaviors. It was also found that younger students were more likely to rationalize dishonest behaviors. It is also important to consider from which source students are receiving academic integrity information. Course syllabi, first-year orientation, program counselors, faculty, deans and other administrators, and other students were all found to be significant predictors related to student perception of faculty support of academic integrity policies. Students who have higher perceptions of severity scores and higher perceptions of faculty support of academic integrity policies scores were found to be more willing to report peers. Additionally, having program-wide interventions, such as an honor code, could help strengthen the overall culture of integrity. Frequent communication and consistent academic integrity policies are vital for faculty to maintain throughout nursing programs Faculty should remain vigilant to changing trends in how students violate academic integrity violations and provide consistent messages.

Environmental conditions and their influence on information processing by deans in baccalaureate schools of nursing

Donckers, Susan Waldrop January 1987 (has links)
The problems of declining enrollments and shrinking resources seem particularly acute for baccalaureate schools of nursing. In a study of responses to these and other problems, deans of five types of baccalaureate nursing schools described how they collected and channeled information as they developed strategies to ensure the future of their programs. A questionnaire was sent to the deans of 344 baccalaureate schools of nursing. Forty-two percent of the deans returned the questionnaire. A follow-up study of 30% of the nonrespondents produced an inadequate return and did not permit comparison of respondents and nonrespondents. The data were summarized using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Relationships were examined with one-way analyses of variance and Pearson correlation coefficients. The most commonly perceived factors impacting each type of school, the types of information sought for each factor, the ways information was channeled, the actions taken regarding each factor, and potential future actions were reported. Two one-way analyses of variance found no differences ∝= .05) among the types of schools in (a) the total amount of impact on the school of all the factors and (b) the total amount of influence over these factors felt by the dean of the school. Pearson correlation coefficients for total impact and the number of years the dean had been in office and total influence and the number of years the dean had been in office were not large enough to be statistically significant ∝= .05). Suggestions for research included studies of the information-processing and decision-making strategies of deans and comparative studies of information-processing and decision-making in schools of nursing and schools in other academic areas. / Ed. Child abuse and neglect education in schools of nursing in the province of British Columbia and the state of Washington

Watt, Judith Louise 11 1900 (has links)
Child abuse and neglect has been an historical problem which has only entered our consciousness as legislation to protect children has been passed. Public and media awareness has mushroomed along with the number of disclosures and increasingly dramatic stories of abuse and neglect. Nurses, because of their many different places of practise, come in contact with many victims and offenders. How does their education prepare them for this task? The study surveyed of schools of nursing in British Columbia and the state of Washington through the directors of nursing, associate deans, deans and coordinators, to instructors and faculty members who teach child abuse and neglect education. Instructors and faculty members completed a questionnaire of 23 questions about child abuse and neglect education in their schools of nursing and about their own educational preparation and experience. The questionnaire was expanded from a similar study done in 1985-86. Not all schools of nursing have child abuse and neglect education. Of those indicating they teach child abuse and neglect, most devote 2-4 hours to teaching. Child abuse and neglect education is taught in a wide variety of nursing subject areas. There are fewer resources (both personnel and print and media) being used in teaching child abuse and neglect in 1993 than in 1985-86. The majority of faculty members and instructors were not educated in the province or state in which they now teach and also the majority did not receive child abuse and neglect education during their baccalaureate education. Instructors and faculty members from Washington had more suggestions for improving child abuse and neglect education than did those from British Columbia. Education about reporting child abuse and nursing and sexually transmitted diseases is inconsistent. There is very little child abuse and neglect interprofessional education. While the diversification of nurses' job placements makes them ideal professionals to identify, prevent, and treat child abuse and neglect, their educational preparation does not appear adequate for this task.
