Contemporary storytelling practice : a look inside the Portland Art Museum's Object stories

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the use of contemporary storytelling practice in a museum setting can successfully engage visitor voices with objects. Specifically, this research used an exploratory case study to better understand Object Stories at the Portland Art Museum. The unique attributes inherent in Object Stories make it an exemplary program to research and through which to gain understandings regarding effective contemporary storytelling techniques within a museum. The use of digital archives, the creation of a safe space, and enabling visitors to share personal stories about museum objects are some of the qualities that set Object Stories apart from other contemporary storytelling programs in the United States. Four themes emerged through interviews, observations, and the study of documents forming a rich and detailed understanding of Object Stories. These themes are found within and help elucidate the successful characteristics of Object Stories. Based on the findings of this study, museum educators can look to this interactive gallery space at the Portland Art Museum to help them develop or enhance storytelling programs, and ultimately to improve the development of empathetic connections between visitors and museum objects. / text

Statistics of YSO jets in the galactic plane from UWISH2

In order to study jets and outflows from Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), I performed an unbiased search on a continuous 33 square degree sized region in Serpens and Aquila using data taken from the UWISH2 survey, which uses the 1-0 S(I) emission line ofH2 as a tracer. I identified 130 molecular hydrogen outflows from YSOs from which 120 (92 %) objects are new discoveries. Distances were measured by foreground star counts with an accuracy of25 %. Outflows were found in groups of 3 - 5 members with a size of about 5 pc. Groups were separated by about half a degree on the sky. About half of the objects were assigned with potential source candidates. Brighter MHOs had a higher probability to have a source candidate assigned to them. I find an over abundance of outflows with position angles between 1300 and 1500 which is almost perpendicular to the Galactic Plane. The fraction of parsec scale outflows is about 25 % which is more than twice compared to the one found in Orion A by Stanke et al. (2002) and Davis et al. (2009). The outflows are not able to provide a sufficient fraction of energy and momentum to support the turbulence levels in their surrounding molecular clouds. The typical dynamical jet age was of the order of 104 yrs, while groups of emission knots are ejected every 103 yrs. This indicates that low level accretion rate fluctuations and not Fu-Ori type events are responsible for the episodic ej ection of material. The luminosity distribution of the outflows shows a power law behaviour with N ex: LH;·9. The Milky Way star formation rate was estimated to more than 1.6 ± 0.4M0 yr-1 The Spectral Index Classification distribution plot of YSOs indicated that the number of outflows increases in line with a values and has a similar distribution to the one from Davis et al. (2009) from Orion A.

The central focus for this creative project was to explore the possibilities of found object and recycled art with emphasis on function and design. After researching the art and the artists who made/make it, a collection of functional art was created. The project resulted in a body of work that consisted of thirteen bags and purses that were made from gift cards and gameboards. The design of 1970's and 1980's art was used as inspiration. Traditional metalsmithing techniques were required for the completion of each work. Copper wire was used as both a structural and ornamental element. The awareness of recycled art will be heightened. Found object and recycled art is significant, purposeful, and important in both the history and future of art. / Department of Art

Gauti rezultatai parodė, kad indeksų veiksmingas priklauso nuo tam tikrų sąlygų ir aplinkybių, kuriomis jie naudojami. / Over the past few years, there has been a continuous improvement in the wireless communications and the positioning technologies. As a result, tracking the changing positions of continuously moving objects is becoming increasingly feasible and necessary. Databases that deal with objects that change their location and/or shape over time are called spatio-temporal databases. Traditional database approaches for effective information retrieval cannot be used as the moving objects database is highly dynamic. A need for so called spatio-temporal indexing techniques comes to scene. Mainly, by the problem they are addressed to, indices are divided into two groups: a) indexing the past and b) indexing the current and predicted future positions. Also the have been proposed techniques covering both problems. This work is a survey for well known and used indices. Also there is a performance comparison between several past indexing methods. STR Tree, TB Tree and the predecessor of many indices, the R Tree are compared in various aspects using generated datasets of simulated objects movement.

Minimalist Multi-Robot Clustering of Square Objects: New Strategies, Experiments, and Analysis

Studies of minimalist multi-robot systems consider multiple robotic agents, each with limited individual capabilities, but with the capacity for self-organization in order to collectively perform coordinated tasks. Object clustering is a widely studied task in which self-organized robots form piles from dispersed objects. Our work considers a variation of an object clustering derived from the influential ant-inspired work of Beckers, Holland and Deneubourg which proposed stigmergy as a design principle for such multi-robot systems. Since puck mechanics contribute to cluster accrual dynamics, we studied a new scenario with square objects because these pucks into clusters differently from cylindrical ones. Although central clusters are usually desired, workspace boundaries can cause perimeter cluster formation to dominate. This research demonstrates successful clustering of square boxes - an especially challenging instance since flat edges exacerbate adhesion to boundaries - using simpler robots than previous published research. Our solution consists of two novel behaviours, Twisting and Digging, which exploit the objects’ geometry to pry boxes free from boundaries. Physical robot experiments illustrate that cooperation between twisters and diggers can succeed in forming a single central cluster. We empirically explored the significance of different divisions of labor by measuring the spatial distribution of robots and the system performance. Data from over 40 hours of physical robot experiments show that different divisions of labor have distinct features, e.g., one is reliable while another is especially efficient.
