For-to complements in Appalachian EnglishWade-Woolley, Lesly A. (Lesly Ann) January 1989 (has links)
This thesis investigates the phenomenon of for-to complements in several dialects, focusing primarily on Appalachian English, though Belfast English and Ottawa Valley English are also examined. Following Chomsky's Government and Binding theory, we develop an analysis of for-to that predicts the distribution of for-to complements based on the requirements of Case, and the varieties of licit movement of features allowed by each dialect. To do this, we propose a Revised Case Filter which requires functional categories bearing Case features to discharge Case. We also show that the features of functional categories can move either by head movement (allowing movement of to into for) or by feature transmission (allowing for to move into to). / Each of these mechanisms generates a specific range of well-formed for-to complements; the distribution of these complements can be predicted by the ways in which the dialects allow features to move. Appalachian English and Ottawa Valley English allow head movement of features only, while Belfast English allows features to move via head movement and feature transmission. Thus for-to complements are more wide-spread in Belfast English than in the other for-to dialects. Standard English, which does not allow features to move unless they are accompanied by lexical material, does not exhibit for-to complements at all.

Making a community : land policy in the Kawartha LakesWalker, Glenn. January 2005 (has links)
Between the mid-eighteenth and the mid-nineteenth centuries, the Crown coordinated a revolution in land usage in the Kawartha Lakes, as elsewhere in the colony, through 'civilization' and land redistribution. Attempts to change native society and build settler communities did not quite unfold the way the government intended. 'Civilization' helped the Mississauga farm and taught skills that eased interaction with colonial society, but they continued to produce much of their food by traditional means. Speculation isolated settlers and made land acquisition more difficult, though some speculators provided essential services. Most immigrants bought land privately and many were not able to establish themselves as farmers. Preferential grants were particularly poor at distributing land to settlers and Crown or Clergy Reserves sales were much more likely to transfer property directly to users. The transition to agricultural land usage occurred largely through the state's mediation of conflicting claims to access.

Archaeological systematics and the analysis of Iroquoian ceramics : a case study from the Crawford lake area, OntarioSmith, David Gray January 1987 (has links)
This study is an analytical examination of a stylistic anomaly observed among Middleport Iroquoian village sites (dating c. A.D. 1300-1450) located near Crawford Lake in southcentral Ontario, Canada. The anomaly is characterized by differing percentages of two forms of ceramic smoking pipes from closely spaced, contemporaneous village sites. This distinction occurs throughout southern Ontario, but is particularly pronounced in the Crawford Lake area. In order to develop and test a model to explain this anomaly, an approach employing a hierarchy of inference, including formal, spatial, temporal, economic, social, and cultural levels, is proposed. This is applied to an analysis of pottery and smoking pipes from eight Middleport sites. The key elements of the explanation are: (1) the two styles represent two distinct prehistoric communities; (2) these communities competed with each other for limited resources; and (3) they symbolized this competition through differences in pipe styles. This conclusion indicates that both the material culture and social relations among Middleport communities may be more complex than has previously been inferred.

Previous issue date: 2010-09-03 / In the last decades, the oil, gas and petrochemical industries have registered a series of huge
accidents. Influenced by this context, companies have felt the necessity of engaging
themselves in processes to protect the external environment, which can be understood as an
ecological concern. In the particular case of the nuclear industry, sustainable education and
training, which depend too much on the quality and applicability of the knowledge base, have
been considered key points on the safely application of this energy source. As a consequence,
this research was motivated by the use of the ontology concept as a tool to improve the
knowledge management in a refinery, through the representation of a fuel gas sweetening
plant, mixing many pieces of information associated with its normal operation mode. In terms
of methodology, this research can be classified as an applied and descriptive research, where
many pieces of information were analysed, classified and interpreted to create the ontology of
a real plant. The DEA plant modeling was performed according to its process flow diagram,
piping and instrumentation diagrams, descriptive documents of its normal operation mode,
and the list of all the alarms associated to the instruments, which were complemented by a
non-structured interview with a specialist in that plant operation. The ontology was verified
by comparing its descriptive diagrams with the original plant documents and discussing with
other members of the researchers group. All the concepts applied in this research can be
expanded to represent other plants in the same refinery or even in other kind of industry. An
ontology can be considered a knowledge base that, because of its formal representation
nature, can be applied as one of the elements to develop tools to navigate through the plant,
simulate its behavior, diagnose faults, among other possibilities / Nas ?ltimas d?cadas, o segmento de ?leo & g?s e petroqu?mica tem registrado uma s?rie de
grandes acidentes.
ecol?gica.
possibilidades

L'union européenne et les obtacles non tarifaires : analyse de la pratique conventionnelle européenne à l'aune du droit de l'OMC / The European Union and Non-tariff Barriers : analysis of European Conventional Practice in the Light of WTO LawFaye, Ibra 14 November 2018 (has links)
The generalized decline of tariffs, combined to the dazzling development of liberalism around theworld, led to an extraordinary expansion of non-tariff barriers. This trend is explained by the desire ofsovereign States to restrict the hold of free trade on their internal policies. By using non-tariff barriers, they implement protectionism which is of two kinds. On the one hand, this protectionism is economic. Itaims to protect national economic operators from foreign competition, assuring them market shares atthe expense of other international operators. This protectionism is unlawful. In another hand, theprotectionism must be licit because non-tariff barriers are erected in order to avoid the negation oflegitimate non-economic objectives. Despite the fact that it promotes liberalism, the European Union, inaccordance with constituent treaties, protects non-market values which are hardly defended in WTO.Achieving this double objective is sought through european conventional practice. The latter isdominated by the conclusion of bilateral agreements with different regions through the world. The coreobjective is to « manage globalization ». In this context, three legal orders interact in the explanation ofthe european conventional practice of non-tariff barriers : the « order of bilateral agreements », the oneof « European Union » and the last of « WTO ».
