Study of Information Behavior of Opportunistic Insiders with Malicious Intent

Enterprises have focused on mechanisms to track insiders who may intentionally exceed and misuse their authorized access. However, there is an opportunity to understand why a trusted individual would want to exploit the trust and seek information with the intent of a malicious outcome. The detection of insider rogue or nefarious activities with information to which a user is already authorized is extremely difficult. Such insider threats require more deliberation than just considering it to be a problem that can be mitigated only by software or hardware enhancements. This research expects to help gain an early understanding of antecedents to such information behavior and provide an opportunity to develop approaches to address relevant character traits which could lead to a higher propensity of information misuse. This research proposes a theoretical framework and a conceptual research model to understand the antecedent factors to opportunistic information-seeking behavior of individuals. The study follows the three-essay format. Essay 1 explores the scholarly literature published about insider behavior to understand information behavior and proposes the theoretical framework for the study. PRISMA methodology was used for the thematic literature review. Essay 2 is a quantitative study of 424 university students surveyed using an online instrument for their responses to various scenarios in the context of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty is proposed as a proxy for information misuse. Essay 3 is a qualitative study engaging senior executives from various industries to understand their perspectives on the behavioral characteristics of individuals as they try to protect their corporate information from being misused and protect their reputation and liability from malicious use of their information.

Designing Efficient Routing Protocols in Delay Tolerant Networks

This thesis presents the design and evaluation of routing protocols for efficient content delivery and dissemination in delay tolerant networks. With the advancement in technology, the communication devices with wireless interfaces become more and more universal. Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) are characterized by intermittent connectivity and limited network capacity. There exist several different application scenarios: connectivity of developing countries, vehicular DTN road communications, and social contact networks. In this thesis, we explore the characteristics in DTNs, such as mobility pattern, contact history information, and social feature information, to design efficient routing schemes. The research reported in this thesis investigates the technical challenges and their solutions of applying different DTN routing protocols. We design multicast schemes to forward the information to a group of destinations in DTN environment. We extend the delegation forwarding scheme in DTN multicasting. An non-replication multicast tree is also studied in this report. We also apply ticket-based and social-tie-based approaches in content distribution systems. We leverage the users' social feature information to study the hypercube-based routing schemes in social contact networks. We also study the resource management problem in DTNs. We design a joint replication-migration-based scheme to solve the storage congestion. These techniques are evaluated comprehensively in realistic simulation studies, by comparing the performance with state-of-the-art approaches in both synthetic and real traces. / Computer and Information Science

Occurrence and Control of Microbial Contaminants of Emerging Concern through the Urban Water Cycle: Molecular Profiling of Opportunistic Pathogens and Antibiotic Resistance

In an era of pervasive water stress caused by population growth, urbanization, drought, and climate change, limiting the dissemination of microbial contaminants of emerging concern (MCECs) is of the utmost importance for the protection of public health. In this dissertation, two important subsets of MCECs, opportunistic pathogens (OP) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARG), are studied across several compartments of the urban water cycle, including surface water, stormwater, wastewater, recycled water, and potable water. Collectively, this dissertation advances knowledge about the occurrence of OPs and ARGs across these water systems and highlights trends that may be of value in developing management strategies for limiting their regrowth and transmission. Field studies of two surface water catchments impacted by stormwater runoff demonstrated the prevalence of ARGs in urban stormwater compared to pristine, unimpacted sites, or to days when no precipitation was recorded. The role of wastewater reuse in transmitting OPs and ARGs was also investigated. Traditional tertiary wastewater treatment plants producing water for non-potable use were found to be largely ineffective at removing ARGs, but plants using advanced oxidation processes or ozonation paired with biofiltration to produce direct potable reuse water were highly effective at removing ARGs. Non-potable reclaimed water consistently had greater quantities of sul1, a sulfonamide ARG, and Legionella and Mycobacterium, two OPs of significant public health concern, present than corresponding potable systems. Limited regrowth of OPs and ARGs did occur in simulated premise (i.e., building) plumbing systems operated with direct potable reuse waters, but regrowth was comparable to that observed in systems fed with potable water derived from surface or groundwater. Advancements were also made in understanding the role of several hypothesized driving forces shaping the antibiotic resistome in natural and engineered water systems: selection by antimicrobials and other compounds, horizontal gene transfer, and microbial community composition. Finally, whole-genome and metagenomic characterization were applied together towards profiling L. pneumophila in clinical and water samples collected from Flint, Michigan, where an economically-motivated switch to an alternative water source created conditions favorable for growth of this organism and likely triggered one of the largest Legionnaires' Disease outbreaks in U.S. history. / PHD

Opportunistic Pathogens and the Brain-eating Amoeba, Naegleria fowleri in Reclaimed Water, Municipal Drinking Water, and Private Well Water

Opportunistic pathogens (OPs) are of special concern for immunocompromised populations and are known to grow in both drinking water and reclaimed water (i.e., non-potable recycled water) distribution systems, with aerosol inhalation and other non-ingestion exposures that are not addressed by existing regulatory frameworks. Factors enabling the growth of OPs in water distribution and premise (i.e., building) plumbing systems distributing reclaimed and other water sources systems are poorly understood especially for the emerging OP, Naegleria fowleri (i.e. brain-eating amoeba). Three phases of investigation were carried out to identify factors that facilitate the growth of OPs in main distribution and premise plumbing systems, with particular attention on reclaimed water systems, aging water mains, and private well systems. Phase one examined the role of biological treatment to remove organic carbon and disinfectant type on the occurrence of OPs during distribution of reclaimed water. Laboratory-scale simulated reclaimed water distribution systems were employed to systematically examine the effects of prior granular activated carbon (GAC) biofiltration of the water; chlorine, chloramines, or no disinfectant, and water ages ranging up to 5 days. The second and third phases of research explored the role of nitrification, iron corrosion, and disinfectant on the growth of N. fowleri both in municipal drinking water from a city grappling with aging water infrastructure and untreated private well water. Results from the simulated reclaimed water distribution systems suggested that biologically-active GAC filtration may unintentionally select for specific OPs, contrary to expectations and experiences with oligotrophic conditions in potable water systems. While GAC biofiltration was associated with lower total bacteria and Legionella spp. gene markers, there were no apparent benefits in terms of other OPs analyzed. Similarly, disinfectant treatments successful for controlling OPs in potable water were either ineffective or associated with increased levels of OPs, such as Mycobacterium spp. and Acanthamoeba spp., in the reclaimed water examined. In the potable water study, it was possible to recreate conditions associated with growth of N. fowleri in the aged main distribution system from where the water for the experiment was collected; including corroding iron mains, nitrification, and disinfectant decay. While the effects of nitrification could not be confirmed, there was a clear association of iron corrosion with N. fowleri proliferation. The role of iron was explored further in what, to the author's knowledge, was the first study of N. fowleri in private wells. Analysis of 40 wells found correlations between N. fowleri and stagnant iron levels, further supporting the hypothesis that iron corrosion or iron encourages the growth of N. fowleri, and, because wells are not routinely disinfected, not necessarily as a result of promoting disinfectant decay. As this study took place following a major flooding event, it provided insight not only into how surface water contamination may influence private well water microbial communities, but also added to the understanding that current recommendations for disinfecting private wells are inadequate and standards should be implemented to aid homeowners in the event of flooding. This exploratory research illuminated several factors influencing the OP growth in a range of water systems. Identifying key variables that control growth is crucial to improving the safety of these systems. / MS

Methylobacterium spp.: Emerging Opportunistic Premise Plumbing Pathogens

Opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens (OPPPs) are responsible for many infections linked to drinking water. The annual cost of disease caused by these waterborne pathogens is $850 million. Key characteristics of these opportunistic waterborne pathogens include: disinfectant- resistant, biofilm formation, thermal-tolerance, desiccation-resistant, growth in amoebae and growth in low oxygen conditions. Methylobacterium spp. have been recognized as an emerging OPPP, so the purpose of this study was to investigate these waterborne bacteria in more detail to determine whether they have all characteristics of OPPPs. Seven Methylobacterium spp. strains were studied to measure growth in laboratory broth medium and drinking water, measure hydrophobicity on surfaces found in household plumbing, measure adherence and biofilm formation to surfaces found in household plumbing and measure susceptibility to hot water heater temperatures. Methylobacterium spp. were found to aggregate in lab broth medium and drinking water, hydrophobic on different surfaces in household plumbing, adhere readily and form biofilm on different surfaces and thermal-tolerant to water heater temperatures. These results support and identify Methylobacterium spp. as opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens. / Master of Science

Coexistence of Wireless Networks for Shared Spectrum Access

The radio frequency spectrum is not being efficiently utilized partly due to the current policy of allocating the frequency bands to specific services and users. In opportunistic spectrum access (OSA), the ``white spaces'' that are not occupied by primary users (a.k.a. incumbent users) can be opportunistically utilized by secondary users. To achieve this, we need to solve two problems: (i) primary-secondary incumbent protection, i.e., prevention of harmful interference from secondary users to primary users; (ii) secondary-secondary network coexistence, i.e., mitigation of mutual interference among secondary users. The first problem has been addressed by spectrum sensing techniques in cognitive radio (CR) networks and geolocation database services in database-driven spectrum sharing. The second problem is the main focus of this dissertation. To obtain a clear picture of coexistence issues, we propose a taxonomy of heterogeneous coexistence mechanisms for shared spectrum access. Based on the taxonomy, we choose to focus on four typical coexistence scenarios in this dissertation. Firstly, we study sensing-based OSA, when secondary users are capable of employing the channel aggregation technique. However, channel aggregation is not always beneficial due to dynamic spectrum availability and limited radio capability. We propose a channel usage model to analyze the impact of both primary and secondary user behaviors on the efficiency of channel aggregation. Our simulation results show that user demands in both the frequency and time domains should be carefully chosen to minimize expected cumulative delay. Secondly, we study the coexistence of homogeneous CR networks, termed as self-coexistence, when co-channel networks do not rely on inter-network coordination. We propose an uplink soft frequency reuse technique to enable globally power-efficient and locally fair spectrum sharing. We frame the self-coexistence problem as a non-cooperative game, and design a local heuristic algorithm that achieves the Nash equilibrium in a distributed manner. Our simulation results show that the proposed technique is mostly near-optimal and improves self-coexistence in spectrum utilization, power consumption, and intra-cell fairness. Thirdly, we study the coexistence of heterogeneous CR networks, when co-channel networks use different air interface standards. We propose a credit-token-based spectrum etiquette framework that enables spectrum sharing via inter-network coordination. Specifically, we propose a game-auction coexistence framework, and prove that the framework is stable. Our simulation results show that the proposed framework always converges to a near-optimal distributed solution and improves coexistence fairness and spectrum utilization. Fourthly, we study database-driven OSA, when secondary users are mobile. The use of geolocation databases is inadequate in supporting location-aided spectrum sharing if the users are mobile. We propose a probabilistic coexistence framework that supports mobile users by locally adapting their location uncertainty levels in order to find an appropriate trade-off between interference mitigation effectiveness and location update cost. Our simulation results show that the proposed framework can determine and adapt the database query intervals of mobile users to achieve near-optimal interference mitigation with minimal location updates. / Ph. Organic Carbon Generation Mechanisms in Main and Premise Distribution Systems

Assimilable organic carbon (AOC) is a suspected contributor to growth of microbes, including pathogens, in plumbing systems. Two phases of research were completed to improve knowledge of AOC and other forms of organic carbon in premise plumbing. In the first phase, the AOC Standard Method 9217B was compared to a new luminescence-based AOC in terms of time, cost, convenience, and sources of error. The luminescence method was generally more accurate, as it better captured the peak growth of the test organisms. It was also less expensive and less time-consuming. A few approaches to improving the accuracy of the method and detect possible errors were also presented. In the second phase of research, the possibility of AOC generation in premise plumbing was reviewed and then tested in experiments. It has been hypothesized that removal of AOC entering distribution systems might be a viable control strategy for opportunistic premise plumbing pathogens (OPPPs), but if AOC was generated in premise plumbing systems this approach would be undermined. Possible sources of AOC creation in premise plumbing, which is herein termed "distribution system derived biodegradable organic carbon (DSD-BDOC)," include: leaching of organic matter from cross linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes, autotrophic oxidation of H2 generated from metal corrosion (e.g. sacrificial magnesium anode rods and iron pipes), rendering of humic substances more biodegradable by sorption to oxides such as Fe(OH)3, and accumulation of AOC on filters and sediments. The potential for various plumbing and pipe materials to generate AOC was compared in controlled simulated water heater experiments. Under the worst-case condition, generation up to 645 µg C/L was observed. IT was not possible to directly confirm the biodegradability of the generated organic carbon, and there were generally no correlations between suspected generation of organic carbon and either heterotrophic plate counts (HPC) or of bacterial 16S rRNA genes. DSD-BDOC was also explored in a simulated distribution system with two disinfectant types (chlorine and chloramine) and three pipe materials (PVC, cement, and iron). TOC increased with water age, probably due to leaching of organics from PVC and possibly the aforementioned DSD-BDOC due to autotrophic reactions of nitrifiers and iron-related bacteria. Informative content of insider purchases: evidence from the financial crisis

Yes / Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of insider trading on subsequent stock returns in the UK, with a specific focus on the impact of the global financial crisis of 2007-2008 on the relation between CEO and CFO stock purchases and returns. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical analysis uses 10,230 purchases executed in 679 UK firms by 1,477 directors during the period from 2000 to 2010. Subsequent market-adjusted stock returns are regressed on a set of firm-specific accounting, market and corporate governance variables as well as the characteristics of CEOs and CFOs. Additionally, the analysis distinguishes between the opportunistic and routine trades. Findings – The findings reveal that the position of the trading director and the nature of their trades are important in determining the impact on returns of insider trades. In particular, CEO purchases are on the whole more informative than CFO purchases and opportunistic purchases. The trades in the post-crisis period have a greater impact on subsequent stock returns. Research limitations/implications – The empirical analysis is limited to the trades made by two executives. Future research should consider inside trades by all directors and distinguish between executive and non-executive directors. Also, a behavioral measure should be developed to test if the financial crisis affected the trading behavior of directors and whether directors use insider trading strategically to signal information to the market. Practical implications – The impact of directors’ dealings on stock returns is not homogeneous. Financial analysts and investors should pay more attention to different types of trades and the identity of trading director. Originality/value – This paper, to the authors’ knowledge, provides the first attempt that combines in the same framework the identity and personal attributes of trading executive directors, firm-level corporate governance features, the nature of purchase transactions and the trading period characteristics. Furthermore the empirical analysis is carried out during a period that also covers the recent global financial crisis period and its immediate aftermath.
