In/retrospection : an interactive audiovisual composition for ten-piece orchestra, electronically manipulated audio, and video

Blue, Kevin J. 03 June 2011 (has links)
In/Retrospection is an audiovisual composition employing audio and video in an interactive form, written for a ten-piece orchestra, electronically generated audio, and video that interact with each other in a variety of ways. Not only is the use of overall interaction employed, but each element of the composition is given its own space to develop and take its place in the forefront of the listeners/viewers focus, thus shifting attention to various aspects of the composition. In this way, the composition is neither a video with accompanying audio or audio with accompanying video, but a combination of both forms. On top of this, the electroacoustic portion of the piece, employing both traditional orchestral instruments as well as electronically manipulated sounds and music, adds yet another level of interaction and attention-shifting mechanics to the composition. The constant shifting of the listener's/viewer's focus is the fundamental idea explored in In/Retrospection. / School of Music

The Messe de Requiem op. 54 of Camille Saint-Saëns: An Amalgamation of Contrasting Stylistic Trends in Requiem Composition in Nineteenth-Century Paris

Rogers, Brent January 2015 (has links)
Camille Saint-Saëns's (1835–1921) Messe de Requiem op. 54 (1878) is among the many works by that composer that are all but forgotten by contemporary musicians. As is the case with most of Saint-Saëns's forgotten works, it is of remarkably high quality, possessing numerous features that make it desirable and accessible to a variety of ensembles. This study seeks to bring greater awareness of the piece to a wider audience, to provide a framework for understanding the most prominent style features of the work, and to ascertain its relationship to other well-known French Requiems of the nineteenth century. To this end, this study identifies and summarizes two trends in French Requiem composition in the nineteenth century: the dramatic trend, exemplified by the Grande Messe des morts op. 5 (1837) of Hector Berlioz, and the conservative trend, exemplified by the second and third of Charles Gounod's four Requiem settings: the Messe breve pour les morts (1873), and the Messe funèbre (1883). Salient style features of these three works are discussed in order to determine how their respective composers bring about the dramatic and conservative affects of their respective works. An analysis of the form, text setting, expressive elements (including dynamics, articulation, and orchestration), harmonic practice, and choral voice leading of Saint-Saëns's Requiem is also given, including a discussion of the relationship of the style features of this work to those of the Berlioz and Gounod Requiems.

Prelude, chorale and fantasy : Ecclesiastes 12

Howard, Chris, 1967- January 1991 (has links)
The Prelude, Chorale and Fantasy is a tonally conceived work for orchestra with a duration of approximately twenty minutes which uses as its inspiration the final chapter of Ecclesiastes. It is constructed from a relatively small number of germinal elements which function throughout the work as connecting forces and icons. In it can be found musical ideas used to represent the Trinity, the most significant of which are the quotations of the hymn "How Brightly Shines the Morning Star" which appear throughout. / A greater understanding of the work can be gained by approaching it first on a philosophical level, making connections between the Biblical text and the music and extrapolating from those connections. Following this, a step by step analysis will show the microscopic structure of the work and its relationship to the larger form.

Selected orchestral works by Puerto Rican composers born between 1945 and 1956

Gonzalez, Roberto Juan January 1983 (has links)
The study has identified seven Puerto Rican composers that shared a common bond as first products of the recently established system of post-secondary music education of the island of Puerto Rico. A review of relevant literature produced only one fugitive document with any information about these composers. Through the use of a questionnaire and documents supplied by the composers, information available about these artists was collected and updated in order to provide accurate documentation of their artistic activities. An orchestral work from each of these composers was examined in order to give an insight into some aspects of their individual style, although it was not possible to make generalizations about each composer's style due to the limits of the sample. The study demonstrated the existence of significant works for orchestra by these composers and provided, for each of these artists, a short biographical sketch and a complete list of works up to the present. The composers and works studied were:Esther Alejandro, El zapatero prodigioso Carlos Cabrer, CanticosErnesto Cordero, Concierto evocativo (guitar concerto)Jose Daniel Martinez, Tiempo sinfdnicoJose A. Montalvo, Canto para la America sufridaRoberto Sierra, PolarizacionesCarlos A. Vazquez, Casa LlenaDuring preliminary research, the study also identified substantial errors and omissions in general reference works in music on the subject of Puerto Rican music. The first chapter includes a review of all available literature on the subject of the study, covering published and fugitive sources. The bibliography includes a section with annotated newspaper articles on some of the composers appearing in the study. Computer print-outs from searches of the Comprehensive Dissertation Index and the Repertoire International de Literature Musicale on key words "Puerto Ric" and "music" appear in the appendices.
