On yosida frames and related framesMatabane, Mogalatjane Edward January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MA. (Mathematics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2012 / Topological structures called Yosida frames and related algebraic frames are studied in the realm of Pointfree Topology. It is shown that in algebraic frames regular elements are those for which compact elements are rather below the regular elements, and algebraic frames are regular if and only if every compact element is rather below itself if and only if the frame has the Finite Intersection Property (FIP) and each prime element is minimal.
We also show that Yosida frames are those algebraic frames with the Finite Intersection Property and are finitely subfit; that these frames are also those semi-simple algebraic frames with FIP and a disjointification where dim (L)≤ 1; and we prove that in an algebraic frame with FIP, it holds that dom (L) = dim (L). In relation to normality in Yosida frames, we show that in a coherent normal Yosida frame L, the frame is subfit if and only if it is regular if and only if it is zero- dimensional if and only if every compact element is complemented.

POTENTIAL FOR ALTERNATIVE AGRICULTURAL ENTERPRISES TO REPLACE TOBACCO: BURLEY PRODUCERS PERCEPTIONSMendieta Umana, Maria Paula 01 August 2011 (has links)
Demand for domestic tobacco has decreased over the past two decades. In 2004, the tobacco buyout program terminated marketing quotas and price support established under the federal tobacco program in 1938. Additionally, in 2003, the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WTO FCTC) acknowledged the importance of supply control in conjunction with demand control strategies to eliminate or reduce the consumption of tobacco products. According to the Census of Agriculture, the number of tobacco farms in the US fell by 40 percent between 2002 and 2007. Tobacco farmers are looking for alternative on-farm and off-farm sources of income. This study uses a rank-ordered logit model (ROLM) to explore factors affecting farmers’ perceptions about the potential for grain crops, cotton, peanuts, hay, fruits and vegetables, cow/calf, dairy, beef cattle and, other crops/livestock to replace tobacco production. Results suggest that hay is one of the on-farm enterprises perceived as having the highest potential to replace tobacco among burley tobacco farmers. Age, education, farm size and farm cash receipts were found to affect farmers’ perceptions about the potential for different alternative enterprises to replace tobacco. Additionally, results suggest that researchers should be careful when designing ranking questions in order to maximize rate of response and quality of the data obtained from this type of questions.

Using ordered partial decision diagrams for manufacture test generationCobb, Bradley Douglas 30 September 2004 (has links)
Because of limited tester time and memory, a primary goal of digital circuit manufacture test generation is to create compact test sets. Test generation programs that use Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (OBDDs) as their primary functional representation excel at this task. Unfortunately, the use of OBDDs limits the application of these test generation programs to small circuits. This is because the size of the OBDD used to represent a function can be exponential in the number of the function's switching variables. Working with these functions can cause OBDD-based programs to exceed acceptable time and memory limits. This research proposes using Ordered Partial Decision Diagrams (OPDDs) instead as the primary functional representation for test generation systems. By limiting the number of vertices allowed in a single OPDD, complex functions can be partially represented in order to save time and memory. An OPDD-based test generation system is developed and techniques which improve its performance are evaluated on a small benchmark circuit. The new system is then demonstrated on larger and more complex circuits than its OBDD-based counterpart allows.

Application of Ordered Nano-TiO2 Thin Film to Dye-Sensitized Cell by Anodization methodLin, Yuan-hong 26 July 2007 (has links)
We use different methods to deposit Ti thin film on the ITO glass substrate. Under the circumstances of using fixed concentration of electrolyte, changing anodic time, and applying voltage, we are able to use anodic method to make ordered nano TiO2 thin film,of which the smallest pore size is 18nm and the thickness is 4500

Combination of Levene-Type Tests and a Finite-Intersection Method for Testing Trends in VariancesNoguchi, Kimihiro January 2009 (has links)
The problem of detecting monotonic increasing/decreasing trends in variances from k samples is widely met in many applications, e.g. financial data analysis, medical and environmental studies. However, most of the tests for equality of variances against ordered alternatives rely on the assumption of normality. Such tests are often non-robust to departures from normality, which eventually leads to unreliable conclusions. In this thesis, we propose a combination of a robust Levene-type test and a finite-intersection method, which relaxes the assumption of normality. The new combined procedure yields a more accurate estimate of sizes of the test and provides competitive powers. In addition, we discuss various modifications of the proposed test for unbalanced design cases. We present theoretical justifications of the new test and illustrate its applications by simulations and case studies.

A Characterization of LYM and Rank Logarithmically Concave Partially Ordered Sets and Its ApplicationsHuang, Junbo January 2010 (has links)
The LYM property of a finite standard graded poset is one of the central notions in Sperner theory. It is known that the product of two finite standard graded posets satisfying the LYM properties may not have the LYM property again. In 1974, Harper proved that if two finite standard graded posets satisfying the LYM properties also satisfy rank logarithmic concavities, then their product also satisfies these two properties. However, Harper's proof is rather non-intuitive. Giving a natural proof of Harper's theorem is one of the goals of this thesis.
The main new result of this thesis is a characterization of rank-finite standard graded LYM posets that satisfy rank logarithmic concavities. With this characterization theorem, we are able to give a new, natural proof of Harper's theorem. In fact, we prove a strengthened version of Harper's theorem by weakening the finiteness condition to the rank-finiteness condition. We present some interesting applications of the main characterization theorem. We also give a brief history of Sperner theory, and summarize all the ingredients we need for the main theorem and its applications, including a new equivalent condition for the LYM property that is a key for proving our main theorem.
