Potentiometric pH Measurements in the Pressure Acid Leaching of Nickel LateritesJankovic, Zoran 15 February 2011 (has links)
An electrochemical cell consisting of a flow-through yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) sensor and a flow-through Ag/AgCl reference electrode has been employed to measure pH of high-temperature acidic sulphate solutions relevant to the pressure acid leaching (PAL) of nickel laterites. In a previous study, this cell was used to measure pH of H2SO4, Al2(SO4)3-H2SO4 and MgSO4-Al2(SO4)3-H2SO4 solutions at 250oC. In this work, the solutions range in complexity from the binary MgSO4-H2SO4, NiSO4-H2SO4, and Al2(SO4)3-H2SO4, through the ternary MgSO4-Al2(SO4)3-H2SO4 and NiSO4-Al2(SO4)3-H2SO4, to the PAL process solutions, whereas the temperature ranges from 200oC to 250oC. The measured and theoretical pH values typically agree within less than 0.1 pH unit and 0.2 pH units in synthetic solutions and PAL solutions, respectively. This is an improvement over the results of the previous study in synthetic solutions, which show differences between theory and experiment as high as 0.4 pH units. The conversion of measured potentials into pH values is based on the new mixed-solvent electrolyte (MSE) speciation model of the OLI Systems software calibrated independently based on solubility measurements. Both Henderson’s equation and the exact definition of the diffusion potential were employed in treating the obtained experimental data. Experimental pH values calculated using the diffusion potentials evaluated by either approach are essentially the same. This finding suggests that Henderson’s equation, which is based on readily available limiting ionic mobilities, can be effectively used. Lithium chloride is found to be a suitable alternative to sodium chloride as the reference electrode solution for the measurement of pH of aluminium-containing solutions, because it did not induce precipitation of aluminium as an alunite-type compound. The experimental results indicate that the high-temperature behaviour of Ni, Co and Mn sulphates can be satisfactorily approximated with that of MgSO4. The experimental findings also support the postulation that acid should be added to a PAL process so that the solution pH is around 1 at the leach temperature, regardless of the feed composition. The cell can be used for hydrometallurgical process research and development on a laboratory scale with very satisfactory performance, provided that a well-behaved YSZ sensor is available.

Mechanism of Cathodic Prevention of Carbon Steel in ConcreteRattakham, Krittin 24 March 2017 (has links)
In this work, I aim to clarify the mechanism that allows steel to attain higher chloride threshold as it is cathodically polarized. Specifically, I seek to provide empirical information on whether an intrinsic (predominantly interfacial effects of polarization) or an extrinsic (predominantly concentration changes due to polarization) mechanism may be dominant in the beneficial effect of polarization. I carried out this experiment with 12 identical concrete specimens, each with a cast-in steel plate, constantly exposed them to high-chloride environment. The specimens were divided into 4 triplicates and polarized at 4 different level from OCP, -200, -300 to -400 mVSCE
The specimens were closely monitored for signs of corrosion. When corrosion was detected in a specimen, it was demolished to gain access to steel-concrete interface. Measurements of pH using a novel procedure and chloride ion concentration were done on the interface using an adapted in-situ pH measurement and a Florida Department of Transportation procedure respectively. The pH and chloride ion concentrations obtained in this study favor to some extent a dominant intrinsic mechanism interpretation, while the evidence in support of a dominant extrinsic mechanism interpretation remains elusive.

Development of a Machine to Control the Level of Washing in Panca Chili SeedsDe La Cruz, Anthony, Cardenas, Jaime, Vinces, Leonardo 01 January 2021 (has links)
El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / The washing of Panca chili seeds requires innovative solutions that allow controlling this process. It is necessary to handle variables (conductivity, pH, colorimetry) in the face of the challenge of working with small seeds. At present, there are no machines that are dedicated to the washing of this type of seeds, since in many companies this work is done manually, which is not the one indicated because this technique cannot guarantee homogeneity in the seed washing. In addition, direct handling of this type of seeds can cause irritation to the eyes and skin of the person who maintains contact with the seeds. That is why, it is proposed to make a machine to scale by means of a motorized rotary agitator inside a tank, in order to guarantee the homogeneity of the mixture when washing seeds. The present work will allow to determine, among two different types of agitators (axial and radial), which type of agitator is the most efficient in the washing of seeds of Panca chili, to achieve this objective the measurement of pH and electrical conductivity to the water will be carried after the mixture, after stirring. Finally, the analysis of the tests performed on the mixture obtained and washed by each type of agitator allowed to identify the turbine-type radial agitator, like the one that obtained greater efficiency in the washing of seeds, with respect to the helical agitator and pallets, designed for development of this work, in turn, could also confirm that this type of palette with the conductivity control allows to guarantee the homogeneity of the mixture during washing. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG. / Revisión por pares

[pt] DESENVOLVIMENTO DE MODELOS UTILIZANDO INTELIGÊNCIA ARTIFICIAL PARA PROBLEMAS DE GARANTIA DE ESCOAMENTO NA INDÚSTRIA DE PETRÓLEO / [en] DEVELOPMENT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MODELS APPLIED TO THE FLOW ASSURANCE PROBLEMS IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRYBRUNO XAVIER FERREIRA 10 November 2022 (has links)
incrustação é geralmente causada por parafina, hidratos e sal inorgânico. Neste
depende fortemente do pH do sistema.
10. / [en] A significant concern during oil and gas production is flow assurance to
avoid loss of time and money. Due to production conditions changes (such as
pressure and temperature), especially in the Brazilian pre-salt region, the solubility
of the components of the crude oil (oil-gas-water) can decrease, resulting in the
formation of deposits. The fouling is usually caused by wax, gas hydrate, and
inorganic salt (scale). In this work, models were developed using Machine
Learning strategies for scale formation monitoring and measuring process
parameters associated with remediation of obstruction from other sources. First,
models for the calcium carbonate scaling formation process in the presence of
monoethylene glycol (typical gas hydrate inhibitor) were created using
feedforward neural network architecture to predict the differential pressure (deltaP)
one and five steps ahead, obtaining an R2
higher than 92.9 percent for the training and
test group for both the prediction horizon. The second approach explored was the
development of models for determining the pH in atmospheric and pressurized
systems (up to 6.0 MPa) using image analysis. These models could be applied to
control and monitor the Nitrogen Generation System, which can be used for
different flow assurance problems, and its kinetics strongly depend on the system s
pH value. This step initially created classification models for the system pH (2, 3,
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) using the Convolution Neural Networks (CNN), Support Vector
Machine, and decision tree architectures. Also, CNN models were built to predict
the pH in the range of 2-10.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding for morbid obesity:primary, intermediate, and long-term results including quality of life studiesTolonen, P. (Pekka) 09 September 2008 (has links)
Abstract
Morbid obesity is the most rapidly increasing health threat of developed countries, and the costs caused by it are already higher than those of smoking. In an increasing number of developing countries both starvation and morbid obesity are increasing simultaneously. Obesity in children and adolescents is also increasing rapidly. Conservative treatment almost invariably fails when treating morbid obesity. Results of pharmacotherapy have been disappointing after great expectations. Laparoscopic gastric banding has been used in the treatment of morbid obesity since 1993. The method was first used mostly in Europe. In the USA either an open or laparoscopic gastric bypass have been the most common methods of surgery.
The aim of this study was to investigate the operation results of 280 patients operated in Vaasa Central Hospital during the 11 years after March 1996. Of these patients, 123 have been followed at least 5 years. The results have been analyzed with BAROS that measures the quality of life.
Quality of life was measured prospectively 1 year after surgery with the 15D questionnaire that is validated in the Finnish population. The effect of gastric banding in esophageal motility and reflux was studied prospectively in 31 patients. Late results were analyzed in 123 patients 11 years after the first operation. Mean excess weight loss (EWL) was 56% in patients who had their band in place 7 years after surgery, and 46% in all patients.
There was no mortality related to the operation, and there was only one serious complication. Disease-specific quality of life improved in 78.8% of the patients in 28 months of follow-up. Health-related quality of life was significantly improved 12 months after surgery, but improvement was not connected to the amount of weight loss. The band inhibited reflux 19 months after surgery.
Complications, failures, and reoperations increase with longer follow-up. Weight loss is moderate 9 years after a gastric banding operation, and in carefully selected patients this operation is still a good option in the treatment of morbid obesity.

Vliv vybraných aktivních látek na vlastnosti gelových a emulzních kosmetických základů / Influence of selected active compounds for properties of gel and emulsion cosmeticsGardoňová, Lenka January 2009 (has links)
This master‘s thesis studies problems of chosen active substances in cosmetic emulsions and gels. There is their main characteristics – distribution and properties of cosmetic emulsions and gels, preparation of the active substances, effects on the skin and conditions, which could them influence. In experimental part, preparation of gels and emulsions bases was described which were than enriched by active substances - evening primrose oil, hemp oil, Salvia officinalis extract, Symphytum officinale extract and sea salt. Properties of these cosmetic gels and emulsions bases with the addition of active substances depend on temperature and method of storage, amount of light exposure, method of preparation and another conditions. Action of these factors can cause changes of the stability, thereby the cosmetics effects on the skin can be lost. On the bases of performed rheology measurements (oscillation and flow measurements), pH measurements and sensory analysis were determined, if the properties of examined samples were changed. The measurement was performed in the certain time intervals and the properties were evaluated like at laboratory temperature 23±2 °C, so after exposure to temperature regime 37 °C in thermoregulator. On the basis of performed measurements, there was determined, that gel base with addition of Symphytum officinale extract had the most stability properties.
