Produção de mudas de Dypsis decaryi (Jum.) Beentje & J. Dransf. : efeito de tratamentos pré-germinativos e de substratos /Dias, Jaine Aparecida de Camargo. January 2012 (has links)
In order to assist the nursery on the seedling production, it is necessary to seek strategies that enable the production of the same. EXPERIMENT I: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-germination treatments and different substrates on the germination of the seeds and shoot growth of seedlings of Dypsis decaryi. The experiment was conducted at the Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP, Ilha Solteira, conducted in a greenhouse (Pad & Fan, temp. 25 o C ± 3) in the period April to September 2011; design was completely randomized in a factorial 4 x 3, with 1 control and 3 pre-germination treatments (mechanical scarification; chiseling + submersion in water for 24 hours, submersion in water for 24 hours) and 3 substrates (sand, vermiculite and commercial substrate). Each treatment consisted of 100 diaspore, and 10 of these was a repetition, so they were made to germinate in black plastic pots (1.3 L) filled with the corresponding substrates. We evaluated: % germination, germination speed index (GSI), mean germination time (MGT) and height of the seedling shoot. Failure of seed scarification, chiseling and chiseling + submersion in water for 24 h can be used for seed germination of D. decaryi. Higher germination percentages were obtained when using the vermiculite. The largest IVG, as well as lower TMG were obtained with the use of vermiculite together with chiseling + submersion in water for 24 h. The substrate Bioplant ® provided the greatest height of the seedling shoot, but it was not affected by pre-germination treatments. EXPERIMENT II: The objective was to determine the most suitable substrate for the initial development of seedlings of D. decaryi. The seedlings resulting from the first experiment... Arizona Landscape PalmsDavison, Elizabeth, Begeman, John 12 1900 (has links)
16 pp. / The luxuriant tropical appearance and stately silhouette of palms add much to the Arizona landscape. Few other plants are as striking in low and mid elevation gardens. Although winter frosts and low humidity limit the choices somewhat, a good number of palms are available, ranging from the dwarf Mediterranean fan palm to the massive Canary Island date palm. This publication addresses the landscape use and
the adaption of palms, as well as how to plant and take care of them. Topics include:
. Landscape Use
. Adaptation
. Planting Palms
. Care of Established Palms
. Diseases and Insect Pests
. Palms for Arizona
. Feather Palms
. Fan Palms
. Palm-like Plants

Characterisation, collection and conservation of Cocos nucifera L. in the south PacificAshburner, Geoffrey Roger Unknown Date (has links)
The genetic resources of coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) in the south Pacific region were characterised using fruit morphological and molecular characters (RAPD). It was concluded that there was continuous variation in fruit morphology and molecular characters throughout the region. The south Pacific gene pool was considered to be composed of two groups, the first a cline of populations from Papua New Guinea across the central Pacific to the south eastern Pacific thought to represent the original gene pool of the Pacific, and the other was comprised of populations from the south western and south central Pacific and was thought to represent the original gene pool of the Pacific that has been affected by subsequent migration of domesticated types from elsewhere. The populations of Rennell Island, Marquesas Islands and Hawaii were members of this latter group but have diverged. The results of both the molecular and morphological characterisation were used to formulate a collection and conservation strategy for coconut germplasm in the region.
