The urban landscape is the physical and social space where our existential relations are given. This research deals with the territory of the Carandiru Complex and its surroundings, which runs from the central region of Santana to the banks of the Tietê River, located in the northern part of the city of São Paulo, belonging to the regional prefecture of Santana / Tucuruvi. This territory, rich in history, underwent a process of transformation, the result of an urban project that aimed to transform a part of the old State Penitentiary complex that was deactivated and demolished giving place to leisure and culture, the Youth Park and the Library of São Paulo, thus transforming the urban landscape of this region and its uses. The general objective of this research is to understand how the transformation of the State Penitentiary Complex, the scene of innumerable major episodes such as the massacre of 111 prisoners in 1992, in Parque da Juventude, interfered in the urban landscape of this region and how this redefined the related collective memory to the territory, and what role it plays within the city. We assume that the urban landscape of Carandiru neighborhood was modified, and that this process generated by the implantation of a park with several urban equipments, like poliesportivas courts, technical schools and library, interfered in the way of perception of this space by the society, to appropriate a new way of this area and of its requalifiedurbanlandscape. / A presente pesquisa pretende analisar a paisagem urbana como um fenômeno mutável que se adapta as necessidades de uma sociedade, considerando esse processo numa perspectiva histórica. A paisagem urbana é o espaço físico e social onde se dão nossas relações existenciais. Esta pesquisa tem como objeto o território do Complexo Carandiru e seu arredores, que vai da região central de Santana até as margens do Rio Tietê, localizado na zona norte da cidade de São Paulo, pertencente a prefeitura regional de Santana/Tucuruvi. Esse território, rico em história, passou por um processo de transformação, fruto de um projeto urbano que visou transformar uma parte do antigo complexo da Penitenciária do Estado que foi desativado e demolido dando lugar ao lazer e cultura, o Parque da Juventude e a Biblioteca de São Paulo, transformando assim a paisagem urbana dessa região e seus usos. O objetivo geral dessa pesquisa é compreender como a transformação do complexo da Penitenciaria do Estado, palco de inúmeros episódios marcantes como o massacre de 111 presos em 1992, em Parque da Juventude, interferiu na paisagem urbana dessa região e como isso redefiniu a memória coletiva relacionado ao território, e qual papel ele desempenha dentro da cidade. Pressupomos que a paisagem urbana do bairro do Carandiru foi modificada, e que esse processo gerado pela implantação de um parque com diversos equipamentos urbanos, como quadras poliesportivas, escolas técnicas e biblioteca, acabou interferindo na forma de percepção desse espaço pela sociedade, que passou a se apropriar de um novo modo dessa área e da sua paisagem urbana requalificada.
