Airport access and travel time uncertainty

Taylor, Robin January 1996 (has links)
The implications of travel time uncertainty on the operational efficiency of airport terminals have until now not been examined. With the forecast growth in congestion levels predicted for all modes of transport, not only will travel time uncertainty increase but its impact may increase also. The first part of this thesis covers the analysis of two passenger surveys conducted at Manchester Airport and Birmingham Airport. These surveys had the objective of providing evidence to support or dispute the belief that air travellers react to travel time uncertainty. The research identifies that passengers do react by allowing margins of safety for their access journeys, and that this change in behaviour will modify the arrival distribution patterns at airports. The second part of this thesis examines how airport passenger flows could be altered by a change in the arrival distribution of originating passengers at airport terminals. Three airports - Manchester, Birmingham and East Midlands International - are modelled using a simulation tool and tested to assess how a shift in arrival distribution affects queuing and peak passenger volumes within the airport terminal. The findings of this thesis show that airport passenger terminal operational efficiency is affected by access journey time uncertainty. It also identifies that passenger decision making can only be explained by various combinations of factors. Possible methods of minimising the effects of travel time uncertainty are considered. The advantages and disadvantages of access journey time uncertainty for airports and airlines are discussed. It concludes that, to be successful in overcoming negative aspects, both parties must provide a service that results in customer satisfaction. This is the only sure way to maintain their respective revenue levels and secure their future in what is becoming an increasingly competitive industry.

In this way, this study sought to compile and present case studies relating to environmental sustainability actions taken at airports worldwide and present the main certifications of environmental sustainability for the built environment. After this overview, this work focused on research in the rational use of water, addressing the consumption of water issues in airports and identifying the environmental sustainability requirements, for that focus, recorded in the certification Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Process AQUA-HQE - High Environmental Quality, in the database of the Sustainable Aviation Guidance Alliance (SAGA), and Memorial Sustainable Criteria for Enterprises (MCSE), prepared by Infraero as a basic guide for the development of sustainable projects of Brazilian airports under its management. To the identified requirements were relate actions, which were compared for the verification of similarities and common goals. This comparison gave a concise set of actions aiming the rational use of water resources, also by reducing the water consumption through the use of economizers sanitary equipment. This has enabled a suggestion to adapt the MCSE, by the incorporation of new actions, for example; as well as the application of some of these actions to sanitary uses at passenger terminal of Vitoria/ES Airport through the development and analysis of scenarios that have concluded the capability of sustainable actions in reducing the demand for water for sanitary purposes in passenger terminals of airports.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, airports equipments were transformed and evolved into different proportions, specially after jet times, in order to optimise the flow, reducing the walking distances for passengers: from terminals to planes. The terminals were rebuilt and extended to adapt to changes and expansion of commercial flight and airplane dimensions; redesigned by architects and following the engineering technical improvements, terminals have come through innovations, which typological classification is one of the main themes of this research. The other subjects developed are: a historical panorama of the international architecture of airports, the birth of Brazilian architecture in this field, and an emphasis on the study of the typologies of some of the most important terminals of Europe, United States and Asia. A sequence of case studies, accompanied by several images composing an iconographic dossier, synthesizes into a classification of contemporary projects of terminal building types, analysing its possibilities of extension.
