Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to determine if a pedometer-driven physical activity (PA) intervention with individualized stepcount goals would be more efficacious in yielding greater amounts of PA than the usual time-based PA recommendations given to maintenance CR patients. Additionally, the secondary purpose of this study was to assess differences in stepcount activity on days attending maintenance CR and on non-rehab days. Methods: Subjects entering maintenance CR for the first referral were recruited for study participation and stratified into pedometer feedback (PF) and usual care (UC) groups. All subjects wore a New Lifestyles NL-1000 pedometer. PF subjects wore the pedometer for the duration of the 8-week study. For comparison, UC subjects wore the pedometer at baseline, week 4, and week 8.Both groups were encouraged to accumulate a minimum of 40 - 50 min/d at moderate intensity when attending maintenance CR. UC subjects were encouraged to follow-up with at least 30 min/d PA outside maintenance CR, while PF subjects were given daily stepcount goals. Stepcount goals were calculated as 10% of baseline stepcounts and added weekly to increase daily goal. All subjects completed a 6- minute walk test at baseline and week 8, and behavioral change questionnaires were completed at baseline, week 4, and week 8. Results: A total of 18 subjects (PF, n = 9, 53.7±8.0; UC, n = 9, 60.2±9.6 yrs) completed the 8-week study. There were no differences between groups at baseline. PF group increased daily stepcounts by week 4 (19%, 1,080±649 steps/d) and 8 (44%, 2,468±846 steps/d) in addition to days attending rehab by week 4 (14%, 1064±45 steps/d) and 8 (36%, 2,711±423 steps/d) and non-rehab days by week 8 (42%, 1,747±759 steps/d). PF subjects accumulated greater daily stepcounts compared to UC subjects at weeks 4 (26%, 1,405±393 steps/d) and 8 (48%, 2,612±284 steps/d). UC subjects accumulated greater stepcounts on rehab compared to non-rehab days, but no changes were found from baseline for daily stepcounts, rehab, or non-rehab days. There was a time effect for responses to social support from friends for all subjects (baseline to week 4) and a time by group effect for decision balance pro-questions by week 4 where PF significantly increased, UC significantly decreased, and both groups where significantly different. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that a pedometer-driven PA intervention yields significantly greater stepcounts compared to time-based PA recommendations among maintenance CR patients. / School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science

To demonstrate the dissemination of the Active Living Every Day (ALED) physical activity (PA) intervention program through a healthcare provider recruitment format. A total of 15 subjects were recruited from Delaware Co., IN and attended 6 mandatory visits over a 16-week period. After completion of baseline PA and risk factor profiles, patients were given the 12-week ALED program. PA was monitored using Omron HJ720-ITC pedometers. Reassessment of all PA and risk factor profiles were performed post intervention. No significant changes were observed for mean PA or percentage of time spent performing sedentary activities. Preliminary results suggest a healthcare provider delivery format is not an effective means for the recruitment of sedentary adults. Further subject recruitment is needed to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of the ALED program to increase PA and affect corresponding risk factor profiles. / School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science

While many short-term physical activity (PA) interventions in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients have proven to be successful at increasing PA levels, little is known about the long-term impact these interventions have. The purpose of the current study was to determine if the Increased Physical Activity in Cardiac Patients (IPAC) study utilizing pedometer feedback, motivational messages, and a combination of both were successful at increasing PA levels and improving cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors after 12 months. The results of the study indicated that none of the IPAC interventions were successful at increasing PA levels after 12 months compared to the usual care group and all groups reverted back to baseline levels. Additionally, no significant differences were seen across time or between groups in most CVD risk factors. Further research is needed to develop PA interventions in CR patients that foster long-term PA maintenance. / School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science

An investigation into the validation of pedometers to detect foreleg steps in horses (Equus caballus) at walk and trot

Background: Current research, surrounding motor laterality at a population level in horses, indicates that in order to stand with the left forelimb in advance of the other, it is achieved by taking a greater amount of steps with the left foreleg than the right foreleg (McGreevy & Thomson 2006; McGreevy et al. 2007); suggesting that pedometers could effectively estimate asymmetry of forelimb locomotion in grazing horses. This novel method of detecting forelimb preference also reduces the likelihood of operator influence and provides an inexpensive objective measure of vertical movement which has the advantage of scoring large sample sizes, avoids single-day anomalies by recording over multiple days and overcomes logistical challenges (Vincent & Sidman 2003; Chan et al. 2005; Silva et al. 2010; Warren-Smith & McGreevy 2010). However in order to determine the reliability and validity of this novel measure the relationship between pedometer data and those derived from direct observation will first need to be assessed (Warren-Smith and McGreevy 2010). Objectives: To determine: (1) if pedometers accurately record equine steps at walk and trot, when compared to video analysis, (2) if alternative positioning of these pedometers affected the accuracy of step detection when compared to video analysis. Method: Five horses each wearing a Yamax Digiwalk SW-200 (spring lever arm pedometer) and a Yamax Power Walker PW-610/611 (piezoelectric pedometer) positioned on the left foreleg (LF), left scapular (LS), chest (C), right scapular (RS) and right foreleg (RF) walked and trotted on a 20m circle 10 times on each rein to yield 100 results for each gait. Video recorded by GoPro Hero 3 Black edition camera positioned on the girth facing the forefeet using the following settings: 180 degree field of view, 720p, 120fps. Both visual and audio data were captured and recorded. Results: Kruskal-Wallis Test on the deviation from actual number of steps per unit for each type of pedometer and the position of the pedometer compared to the actual number of steps taken by both forelegs determined that there is a significant difference (H1= 340.31; P < 0.0001) between readings in walk and also in trot (H1 = 483.49; P < 0.0001). A further Kruskal-Wallis Test on the deviation from actual number of steps per unit for each type of pedometer and the position of the pedometer compared to the actual number of steps taken by individual forelegs determined that there is a significant difference (H = 403.36; p < 0.0001) at walk and also at trot (H = 477.10; p < 0.0001). Conclusion: In summary, the analysis of the pedometer data compared to video analysis indicate that pedometers are not useful for scoring forelimb movements in horses at walk and trot, regardless of positioning.

According to motivational theory physical self-perceptions are crucial to the intrinsic desire to engage in physical activity through play, games, and sport. While there has been prolific research with middle primary and older children little is known of the importance of young children's physical self-concept and their motivation to engage in physical activity. This study had three major purposes. Firstly it aimed to examine the relationship between children's self-concept, their attraction to physical activity, and level of physical activity. The second purpose of the study was to examine differences between boys' and girls' self-concept, attraction to physical activity and level of physical activity. The third purpose was to examine the effectiveness of an intervention programme designed to enhance children's level of physical activity.
