Mercury Contamination in Pelagic Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico

Knowledge of mercury concentrations in fish is essential for human health protection. Mercury is a naturally occurring element that acts as a neurotoxin to humans and other species. The biologically available mercury form, methylmercury (MeHg), bio accumulates from small benthic invertebrates to large pelagic fish, and therefore high end consumers and terminal predators have elevated Hg concentrations. The main pathway of MeHg exposure in humans is by consumption of contaminated fish. In this study total Hg concentrations were measured in 10 Gulf of Mexico pelagic fish species using a DMA 80 analyzer. Total Hg concentrations ranged from 0.004 to 3.55 ppm (wet wt). The highest mean concentration (1.04 ppm, wet wt) recorded in king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) exceeded FDA recommended criteria of 1ppm. Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and vermilion snapper (Rhomboplites aurorubens) had lowest mean Hg concentrations (<0.3 ppm). The rest of the species were above the EPA advisory level of 0.3 ppm. Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri), greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and gag grouper (Mysteroperca microlepsis) had high Hg concentrations of approximately 0.7 ppm wet wt. Blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacores) had moderate Hg concentrations (0.39 and 0.36 ppm wet wt respectively). Little tunny (Euthynnus alletteratus) and blacktip shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) had mean concentrations of 0.69 and 0.51 ppm respectively. The relationship between fish length and Hg concentrations was significant for four species.

De maneira geral, os resultados indicam que: (1) A dieta de T. albacares e T. obesus é composta primariamente por peixes teleósteos (Bramidae, Gempylidae, Trichiuridae, ent re outros), e secundariamente por moluscos Teuthida (lulas em geral ); (2) Thunnus alalunga apresentou um padrão inverso aos demais atuns anal isados, alimentando-se preferencialmente de moluscos Teuthida, deixando os peixes teleósteos em segundo plano; (3) O espadarte (Xiphias gladius) alimenta-se primariamente de lulas Ommast rephidae; (4) a alimentação de I. oxyrinchus e A. superciliosus foi dominada por cefalópodes da ordem Teuthida. Approche acoustique de la dynamique et la distribution spatiale des ressources halieutiques de petits pélagiques dans l'upwelling sénégalo-mauritanien / Acoustic approach of the dynamic and spatial distribution of small pelagic marine resources inside Sénégalo-mauritanian upwelling

Le long des côtes nord-ouest africaines, parmi les plus poissonneuses au monde, les ressources halieutiques sont importantes tant du point de vue socio-économique que culturel. Les petits poissons pélagiques sont suivis au niveau sous régional depuis plus de trois décennies en s’appuyant sur les méthodes hydroacoustiques d’évaluation de stocks. Ces campagnes ont ainsi permis de fournir aux gouvernants une base scientifique en matière de prise de décision à des fins d’aménagement des pêcheries pélagiques. Un défi spécifique est de connaitre leur représentativité par rapport aux stocks ciblés. Nous rassurons sur cette représentativité sur la couverture de Sardinella aurita par ces campagnes. Par contre, pour S. maderensis une partie du stock ne serait pas échantillonnée et la méthode n’est pas adaptée pour Illisha africana et Ethmalosa fimbriata. Nous reportons des déplacements vers le nord dans la répartition de S. aurita et d’autres espèces de pélagique, attribués à la redistribution de l'intensité et de la productivité des upwellings [découpé en 5 sous zones du sud Maroc au sud Sénégal], diminuant ainsi l’abondance de la sardinelle dans la région côtière intertropicale. Pour la première fois en utilisant des séries chronologiques d'observation indépendantes à la méso-échelle, nous montrons un changement vers le nord dans la distribution de S. aurita depuis 1995 et l'attribuons au fort réchauffement de l'océan dans la région. De plus les changements spatiaux observés dans la biomasse de S. aurita au cours des 20 dernières années sont du même ordre de grandeur que ceux enregistrés pour les isothermes de surface. De tels changements auront une incidence sur les considérations politiques dans la gestion de la sécurité alimentaire dans plusieurs pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest. / Along the coast of North-West Africa, among the richest waters over the word, fish supply is important at both socio-economic and cultural levels. In this region, the small pelagic fish are the most abundant marine resources and are monitored using hydroacoustic stock assessment methods since more than three decades. These surveys have allowed providing to local authorities a sound scientific basis for deciding about the management of pelagic fisheries. A specific challenge is to know the representativity of these surveys with respect to the stocks targeted. In this work, we confirm this representativity for Sardinella aurita stock while for S. maderensis, a part of the stock could have not been sampled and for pour Ilisha africana and Ethmalosa fimbriata these surveys are not the best tool. Furthermore, Northward shifts in the distribution of sardinella in the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem are recorded in this work and have been attributed to the redistribution of upwelling intensity and productivity, resulting in the abundance of sardinella decreasing in the inter-tropical coastal region. Here for the first time using independent observational time series, we report a robust northward shift in S. aurita since 1995 and attribute it to the strong ocean warming in the region. The observed spatial shifts in biomass in the last 20 years are of the same order of magnitude as those recorded for surface isotherms. Such changes will impact policy considerations in the management of food security in several West African countries and should be considered with respect to “Intended Nationally Determined Contributions”.

Population changes in small pelagic fish of the Gulf of Lions : a bottom-up control? / Changements démographiques chez les petits pélagiques du Golfe du Lion : y a-t-il un contrôle bottom-up ?

La compréhension et la gestion des écosystèmes requièrent un maximum de connaissances sur les dynamiques de populations. Depuis 2007, la taille de la sardine (Sardina pilchardus) et de l’anchois (Engraulis encrasicolus) dans le Golfe du Lion a chuté tandis qu’au même moment, la population de sprat, qui a une faible valeur commerciale, a fortement augmenté. Les très forts enjeux économiques autour de ces espèces ont conduit au projet de recherche « EcoPelGol » dans lequel se situe cette étude portant sur les changements observés. La condition corporelle, la croissance ainsi que la structure en âge et en taille des sardines, des anchois et en partie des sprats ont été analysées sur les vingt dernières années. Alors qu’en 2005-2007, la situation semblait optimale pour les anchois et les sardines (taille et condition élevées), celle-ci s’est considérablement dégradée depuis 2008, l’anchois et la sardine étant significativement plus petits et plus maigres. De plus, une diminution de l’âge et de la croissance a été observée chez la sardine. Nous avons ensuite caractérisé les fluctuations des débarquements historiques (1865-2013) de l’anchois, de la sardine et du maquereau. La chute récente des débarquements a été mise en exergue, avec une situation inédite où la sardine est actuellement moins débarquée qu’avant les années 60, date à laquelle les débarquements ont fortement augmenté suite à un accroissement conséquent de l’effort de pêche. Bien que la majorité de la variance dans les séries de débarquements semble être engendré par les changements de l’effort de pêche, nous avons également observé une relation entre les débarquements et l’indice « Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation » pour l’anchois et la sardine et avec le « Western Mediterranean Oscillation » pour l'anchois. Dans une troisième analyse, la pression de prédation du thon rouge sur l’anchois, la sardine et le sprat a été estimée pour voir si l’accroissement de la population du thon depuis 2007 lié à de nouvelle mesures de gestion a pu impacté les poissons petits pélagiques. Mais bien que la sardine et l’anchois soient les proies principales du thon, moins de 2% de leurs populations ont été consommés chaque année entre 2011-2013, et ce, sans sélectivité sur la taille de ces proies de la part du thon. Ainsi, le thon rouge n’a pas pu avoir un impact significatif sur la structure en taille ou les abondances des petits pélagiques. Dans le chapitre final, nous avons considéré la possible influence de pathogènes. Des analyses globales dirigées vers la détection des parasites, des bactéries et des virus ont été effectuées tout au long de l’année et ont révélées la présence ponctuelle et relativement faible de bactéries des genres Tenacibaculum et Vibrio et celle systématique de microparasites. Malgré l’impossibilité d’exclure leur pathogénicité, aucune lésion tissulaire n’a été attribuée à ces organismes, réduisant fortement la probabilité d’une épizootie. Nos travaux indiquent que les mécanismes « top-down », des pathogènes ou encore la pêche ne sont probablement pas les facteurs clés pour expliquer les changements observés chez les poissons petites pélagiques. À l'opposé, certains paramètres environnementaux ont expliqué une partie de la variabilité dans la condition corporelle des poissons et leurs débarquements. Nous concluons donc qu’un contrôle « bottom-up », et particulièrement un changement dans la quantité et/ou qualité du zooplancton, peut être la cause des phénomènes dans les populations des poissons petits pélagiques. Si cette thèse permet une avancée dans la compréhension de leur dynamique, des analyses complémentaires seront nécessaires pour confirmer notre hypothèse principale et pour estimer l’influence des autres facteurs agissant potentiellement en synergie. / Knowledge on population dynamics is key to the improvement of management and the understanding of ecosystem functioning. Since 2007, the size of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) has severely decreased, which has strongly affected the fisheries. Simultaneously, the commercially uninteresting sprat population increased remarkably. As the economic and ecological stakes are high, the EcoPelGol project of which this PhD is part was established. We first analysed the sardine, anchovy and (partially) sprat population for changes in body condition, growth and size and age structure over the last 20 years. We concluded that sardine and anchovy have had from 2008 onwards a distinctively poor body condition and size, and that sardine have also showed a concurrent decrease in age and growth. In contrast, both species were in optimal and average “health” during 2005-2007 and 1992-2004, respectively. Subsequently, historical landings of sardine, anchovy and mackerel were considered (1865-2013), of which the fluctuations were characterised and statistically related to environmental variables. The recent dramatic landings decrease was put into perspective, as for example sardine is now for the first time landed less than before the 1960s, when a big probably effort-related upsurge occurred. Despite most of the variability being explained by what looks like changes in fishing effort, a link was found between the sardine and anchovy landings and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the anchovy landings and the Western Mediterranean Oscillation. Next, as a management associated bluefin tuna increase also happened since 2007, its predation pressure on all three small pelagic species was estimated. We concluded that although sardine and anchovy are bluefin tuna’s main prey items, less than 2% of each population (including sprat) was consumed annually during 2011-2013 and that there was no clear size selectivity. Thus, tuna could not have had a noticeable impact on the population abundance or size structure of the small pelagics. In the last chapter, an epizootic disease was considered. An all-embracing approach directed towards the all-year round detection of both general and specific parasites, bacteria and viruses revealed the mostly temporal and not necessarily high occurrence of only three groups: microparasites, Vibrio spp. (sometimes determined as Vibrio alginolyticus) and bacteria of the genus Tenacibaculum. Although we could not exclude their pathogenicity, significant tissue damage at a cellular or macroscopic level was never observed, making the disease hypothesis less likely. Thus, we considered several hypotheses and indicated that top-down control (through Bluefin tuna predation), pathogens and fisheries are unlikely to be main drivers. In contrast, some environmental parameters explained a part of the variability in fish condition and landings. After a final discussion on all probable theories we concluded that a bottom-up control, such as especially a planktonic change in quantity and/or quality, might be on the basis of the observed changes. Although this work is a great step towards the understanding of the small pelagic dynamics in the Gulf of Lions, further investigations will still be needed to confirm our main hypothesis and to estimate the potential synergetic effect of other drivers.

Among the marine species which cytogenetic data are less well known pelagic forms are detached, that despite the economic importance and conservation efforts have been suffering great pressure from the artisanal and industrial fisheries. The present work characterized cytogenetically six species of large pelagic fish in the Atlantic, belonging to the Order Perciformes, among them, four species of Scombridae, Thunnus albacares, T. obesus, Scomberomorus brasiliensis and Acanthocybium solandri and two Coryphaenidae, Coryphaena equiselis and C. hippurus using Classical cytogenetic methods as conventional staining, C-banding and Ag-NORs and molecular through staining fluorochromes AT and GC-specific and mapping of ribosomal multigene families, 18S and 5S. The identification of phylogenetic patterns and cytotaxonomic markers between the species and the presence of sex chromosomes in at least one species of Coryphaenidae, are particularly useful in the formulating of phylogenetic hypotheses, as well as comparisons between groups and populations / Os estudos citogen?ticos em peixes v?m contribuindo significantemente para um melhor conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade marinha, apresentando informa??es voltadas ? caracteriza??o, evolu??o e conserva??o de esp?cies e estoques pesqueiros. L’étude de l’écologie alimentaire d’une espèce est une clé de la compréhension de sa biologie et de son fonctionnement dans l’écosystème. Ainsi, les interactions proies-prédateurs sont une des voies qui structurent et déterminent les dynamiques des populations et le réseau trophique à l’échelle d’un écosystème. Parmi les sites d’étude d’intérêt majeur, le milieu marin est un espace soumis à des forçages naturels et anthropiques. A l’échelle de l’Océan Atlantique Nord-Est, le Golfe de Gascogne est une vaste baie bordée par l’Espagne au sud et la France à l’est. Ce Golfe est le siège historique d’une intense activité de pêches commerciales pour lesquelles les principales espèces de petits poissons pélagiques ciblés sont la sardine, Sardina pilchardus, et l’anchois, Engraulis encrasicolus. L’objectif de ces travaux est d’analyser l’écologie alimentaire printanière, de ces deux petits poissons pélagiques dans le Golfe de Gascogne. Pour ce faire, le premier volet s’est focalisé sur le compartiment des proies mésozooplanctoniques via deux approches : la caractérisation de leurs dynamiques spatio-temporelles sur la décennie 2003-2013 et la mesure de leur contenu énergétique au printemps. Il apparaît, à cette saison, que tous les types de proies ne se valent pas énergétiquement et que notre site d’étude représente une mosaïque d’habitats alimentaires. De plus, la communauté mésozooplanctonique printanière présente une forte structuration spatiale, une évolution temporelle marquée par un changement majeur d’abondance et un contrôle par la biomasse de microphytoplancton. Le second volet de ces travaux est relatif à une approche méthodologique de l’analyse de l’écologie alimentaire de S. pilchardus et E. encrasicolus. Trois traceurs trophiques distincts ont été utilisés : les ratios isotopiques du carbone et de l’azote, la faune parasitaire et les niveaux de contamination en mercure. Pour perfectionner l’utilisation du premier de ces traceurs, une approche expérimentale a été menée sur S. pilchardus pour déterminer un facteur de discrimination trophique. Finalement, il apparaît que l’utilisation de ces trois traceurs a toujours permis de mettre en évidence une variabilité temporelle relative de l’écologie alimentaire des poissons étudiés. En revanche, aucune dynamique spatiale n’a pu être détectée via ces traceurs. / Dietary studies of marine species constitute an important key to improve the understanding of its biology and of its role in the ecosystem. Thus, prey-predator relationships structure and determine population dynamics and the trophic network at the ecosystem scale. Among the major study sites, the marine ecosystem is submitted to natural and anthropogenic constraints. In the North-Eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Biscay is a large open area surrounded South by Spain and East by France. This bay is an historic place of intense fishery activities for which the main small pelagic species targeted are the pilchard, Sardina pilchardus and the anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus. The aim of this work is to analyze the trophic ecology of these two small pelagic fish in spring in the Bay of Biscay. To do this, a first section is devoted to their prey composed by the mesozooplanktonic compartment, through a two-fold approach: the characterization of their spatio-temporal dynamics during the decade 2003-2013 and the measurement of their energetic content in spring. For this season, it appears that all prey types are not worth energetically and that the Bay of Biscay represents a mosaic of dietary habitat. Moreover, the spring mesozooplankton community presents a strong spatial structuration, a temporal evolution marked by a major change in abundance and a control by the microphytoplankton biomass. The second section of this work is relative to a methodological approach of the trophic ecology of S. pilchardus and E. encrasicolus. Three different trophic tracers have been used: isotopic ratios of carbon and nitrogen, parasitological fauna and mercury contamination levels. To improve the use of the first of these trophic tracers, an experimental approach has been conducted with S. pilchardus to determine a trophic discrimination factor. Finally, it appears that the use of these three trophic tracers has always been permitted to highlight a temporal variability of the relative trophic ecology of these fish. However, no spatial dynamics could be identified through these three trophic tracers.
