The aim of this study was to evaluate histologically and microbiologically, the action of PDT, of the chlorhexidine 0.12% (CLX) and povidone iodine 10% (PVP-I) in a experimental rat periodontal disease model. For this purpose, 28 Wistar rats received bilateral ligature in both mandible first molars at baseline. The sides were randomly assigned to receive ligature only (control group) or ligature and one of the following therapies: PVP-I 10% (n=10), chlorhexidine 0.12% (n=8) and PDT (n=10). Each group received their treatment in three periods: 7, 14 and 21 days. Histometrically, no statistical difference was seen in the intragroup and intergroup evaluation, regarding the reduction of alveolar bone resorption (p>0.05). Histochemically, the evaluation intragroup showed that the group of PDT showed a smaller number of cells TRAP-positivas/mm when compared to CLX group (p<0.05). However, there was no statistical difference in the groups CLX and PVP-I, when evaluated the respective sides receiving therapy and control sides. In the evaluation of therapies, it was not possible to verify significant differences in counting TRAP-positive cells in all groups (p> 0.05). In microbiological evaluation, there was a significant reduction in microbial load in molars treated with PVP-I (p=0.03), indicating a good treatment effectiveness. Among the molars treated with CLX, there was a positive trend towards reduction through this therapy (p=0.10). PDT showed an antimicrobial effect only in some animals, but no significant difference between the treated side and untreated (p=0.54). Therefore, one can conclude that the three agents shown an antimicrobial effect on the total microorganisms, however, as the therapy, only the PVP-I was effective in reducing the bacterial biofilm. With respect to absorption, the three treatments were not able to prevent alveolar bone resorption in molars of the rats at the end of the 21 day study / Mestrado / Periodontia / Mestra em Clínica Odontológica

The aim of this study was to clinically evaluated the use of PerioChip® in sites showing bleeding on probing and pocket depth ranging from 5mm to 8mm (anterior teeth) in maintenance patients. Forty two patients that consented to participate in the study were randomly assigned to two groups test, treated with PerioChip® and control, treated by scaling and root planing. Patients were assessed for plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL) and gingival recession (GR) at baseline, 6, 12 and 24 weeks. After 24 weeks, a reduction of 2,64 + 0,02mm and 2,12 + 0,02mm in PD was observed for the test and control group (p > 0,05), respectively. The observed gain in CAL was 2,19 + 0,87mm and 2,07 + 1,53mm for the test and control group (p > 0,05), respectively. In both treatments, the intragroup comparisons showed statistically significant differences in the parameters evaluated. Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that both treatments were equally effective in the reestablishment of periodontal health in inflamed sites of maintenance patients. However, considering the deep periodontal pocket, the PerioChip® was more efficient than the scaling and root planing as for the reduction in the probing depth / Mestrado / Periodontia / Mestre em Clínica Odontológica

Prevalence of interleukin-1 polymorphisms and its association with periodontal disease status in the Xhosa population of South AfricaTareq, Abu Saleh January 2007 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc / Periodontitis is a bacterially induced chronic inflammatory disease that destroys the supporting tissues of teeth. Clinical observations and experimental evidence indicates that there is a genetic influence of risk factors for periodontitis. A specific pattern of IL-1 polymorphisms (known as the composite IL-1 genotype) has been found to influence the severity of chronic periodontitis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between the IL-1 gene polymorphisms and the severity of periodontal disease in a selected Xhosa ppopulation of South africa. / South Africa

Dental implications of inherited connective tissue disorders in South AfricaChetty, Manogari January 2016 (has links)
The prevalence of Osteogenesis imperfecta type III (OI III) as a category of the inherited connective tissue disorders in South Africa is of paramount importance. Although worldwide, autosomal recessive(AR) OI is rare, it had emerged that the frequency of OI III is relatively high in the indigenous Black African population of South Africa. A review of the literature revealed a paucity of information regarding the dental and craniofacial manifestations of the disorder in this ethnic group. For these reasons, the central theme of this thesis is the identification, documentation and analysis of these features in individuals with OI III in the Black African population of SA. Osteogenesis imperfecta type III (OMIM 259420) is a severe autosomal recessive disorder in which frequent fractures and progressive limb and spinal deformity result in profound physical disability. The condition is heterogeneous and dentin genesis imperfecta (DI) is an important syndromic component of some types of OI III. Other maxillofacial and dental manifestations also have significant implications in terms of management.

The Effect of Biologic Materials and Oral Steroids on Radiographic and Clinical Outcomes of Horizontal Alveolar Ridge Augmentation.Reichert, Amy 01 January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate if the addition of biologic materials and/or oral steroids would affect horizontal bone gain, or the bone density of the grafted bone in horizontal alveolar ridge augmentations. A retrospective chart review was completed to assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes of 53 ridge augmentation patients. An average bone gain of 3.6mm of width was found in our study based on radiographic analysis. There were no statistically significant differences found in the linear bone gain with the addition of biologic materials and steroids. A marginally statistically significant difference was found in the bone density when biologics were added (p-value=0.0653). No statistically significant difference found in the bone density with the addition of oral steroids. The use of tenting screws and resorbable occlusive membranes and a combination of allograft and xenograft bone materials provides significant clinical and radiographic dimensional changes in alveolar ridge width.
