Capacidade de autodepuração do córrego pernada frente às demandas de expansão do sistema de esgotamento sanitário de Paraíso do Tocantins – TO

O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a capacidade de autodepuração do Córrego Pernada, localizado no município de Paraíso do Tocantins – TO. Para tanto, foi realizado um diagnóstico do sistema de esgotamento sanitário existente, bem como um levantamento dos planos de expansão do mesmo. Tal levantamento foi subsidiado a partir de informações fornecidas pela Concessionária de Saneamento e da Prefeitura Municipal. Observou-se que o sistema de tratamento existente tem atendido aos padrões de remoção estabelecidos pela legislação, onde o efluente após tratado é lançado no Córrego Pernada. Porém, com a expansão do sistema, a capacidade depuradora do curso d’água poderá ser prejudicada, dessa forma, aplicou-se o modelo matemático de Streeter-Phelps para avaliação da capacidade de autodepuração do curso hídrico. Para esta análise considerou-se o período de maio a outubro de 2015, para o qual foi realizado um monitoramento sistemático de vazão no corpo receptor a montante do lançamento de efluentes pela Estação de Tratamento de Esgotos do município, sendo observada uma vazão crítica de 35,04 L/s no mês de setembro. Na modelagem, além dos dados de vazão, utilizou-se dos valores de OD e DBO5 obtidos dos relatórios de monitoramento e controle da qualidade fornecidos pela concessionária, condição pela qual foram estabelecidos os coeficientes de desoxigenação (K1), decomposição (Kd) e reaeração (K2). Assim, a partir dos perfis de OD e DBO obtidos, pode-se concluir que para a DBO5 a vazão máxima efluente do Córrego Pernada já está sendo operada e acréscimos no volume lançado poderão ultrapassar o limite da sua capacidade de autodepuração. / This study aimed to evaluate the self-purification capacity of the Pernada Stream, located in the municipality of Paraíso do Tocantins – TO. Therefore, it was performed a diagnosis of the existing sanitary sewage system, as well as a surveying of the expansion plans of that. Such surveying was subsidized through information provided by the Sanitation Concessionaire and the City Hall. It was noted that the existing treatment system has satisfied the removal standards established by law, where the effluent, after treated, it is released in the Pernada Stream. However, with the expansion of the system, the purifying capacity of the watercourse may be impaired, thus, it was applied the mathematical model of Streeter-Phelps (1925) to evaluate the self-purification capacity of the water course. For this analysis was considered the period from May to October 2015, for which was performed a systematic monitoring of flow in the receiving body the amount of discharge of effluents by the Sewage Treatment Station of the city, being observed a critical flow of 35.04 L/s in September. In modeling, besides the data of flow, it was used the OD values and BOD5 obtained from monitoring and quality control reports provided by the concessionaire, condition in which the coefficients of deoxygenation (K1), decomposition (Kd) and reaeration (K2) have been established. Thus, from the OD and BOD profiles obtained, it can be concluded that for BOD5 the maximum flow effluent of Pernada Stream is already being operated and increases in the released volume may exceed the limit of its self-purification capacity.

“The endless roar in which we live”: the figure of noise in nineteenth-century U.S. literature

My dissertation, The Endless Roar in which We Live: The Figure of Noise in Nineteenth-Century U.S. Fiction is the first extended study that locates an intersection between sound studies and literary studies in order to examine noise as it defines spaces and places, and the characters that live and work in them, in American literature from the second half of the nineteenth century through the beginning of the twentieth century. I evaluate noise in a sampling of American fiction, and consider how the imagined sounds of fiction echo nineteenth-century soundscapes and underscore contemporary discernment of noises – and sometimes the lack of noises – in the national consciousness. I consider the street noise that the upper classes wished away, the factory noise that so many women workers spent a lifetime hearing, and the resounding noise of the United States’ expansion westward. Conversely, I also consider how authors and characters respond to the noises that penetrate their ears and create their soundscapes. Together, these considerations shape my argument that sounds help to construct and characterize localities, just as certain places construct particular sounds. Moreover, however, I argue that noise creates spaces wherein identities – such as those of gender, class, and ethnicity – also often tied to place, are discovered, defined, and challenged. In many ways, classifications of noise are subjective and varied, depending on who makes and who hears the noise, where and why the noise is produced, and how and by whom is the noise interpreted. Considering noise as malleable and interpretable based on context allows me to most effectively examine noise as a facilitator of identity formation.

Social Control and the Westboro Baptist Church: Fuel to the Fire?

The social control of protest can be carried out by a number of agents; among them are the police, legislators, organized countermovements, and the news media. This research examines how the tactics and strategies of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) have been shaped and maintained through both internal and external elements of social control. In addition to data obtained through field observations of WBC pickets at the funerals of military personnel who have died in the ensuing military campaign in Iraq, this research utilizes individual and peer group interviews with three generations of WBC members, in addition to a number of WBC internal documents and artifacts. The data provide a background on the WBC as a church, its culture, and the various mechanisms of internal social control that have guided them through upwards of 20,000 street pickets over the last eighteen years. Further, I examine the Westboro Baptists' utilization and perceptions of the role of the police in their "love crusades," as well as the protest policing strategy of Negotiated Management and their uniform utilization of it. This research adds to our current understanding of the relationship between mobilization and social control, specifically the function of narrative as a form of internal social control that facilitates the development of collective identity and culture, intergenerational movement socialization, and shifts in tactics and framing strategies utilized by mobilized collectives. Moreover, this research contributes to our understanding of the impact of ideology and access to legal resources in determining group responses to attempts at the external social control of their mobilization.

Adaptation of streeter model - Phelps for water quality modeling in a large semi-arid basin. / AdaptaÃÃo do modelo de Streeter - Phelps para modelagem da qualidade da Ãgua em uma grande bacia semiÃrida.

This paper presents an adaptation of the classical model of Streeter-Phelps modeling of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) in the basin of the Upper Jaguaribe (25,000 km2), State of Ceara, Brazil. The adaptation of the model consisted of the numerical solution of differential equations Streeter-Phelps, considering the effect of incremental flows and sewage releases over the sections, as well as the variability of the sections of rivers and tributaries. For model calibration, including the adjustment of reaeration coefficients (K2) and removal of BOD (Kd), we used the data of the Plan of Management of Waters of the Rio Jaguaribe Basin. Calibration results showed that this simplified model represented well the balance between DO and BOD in a large semi-arid basin, with a good fit for both parameters. For OD, the average deviation was 8.44% and 6.04% by the end and beginning of the rainy season, respectively. As for BOD, the deviations were 18.51% and 30.43% for the two seasons, respectively. In both periods, the OD remained within the standards for Class 2 of Resolution CONAMA 357/2005 throughout the stretch and the BOD breached this limit on a short stretch near the city of Taua. With the already calibrated model were simulated three scenarios: a large full, using as reference flow Q10 of a historical series of Jaguaribe; drought, using the Q50 of the series; and implementation of a WWTP with 80% removal of BOD in all seats. The simulations showed consistent results and that serve as a basis for management of water resources of the study area. / Este trabalho apresenta uma adaptaÃÃo do modelo clÃssico de Streeter-Phelps para modelagem de OxigÃnio Dissolvido (OD) e Demanda BioquÃmica de OxigÃnio (DBO) na bacia do Alto Jaguaribe (Ãrea de 25.000 km2), Estado do CearÃ, Brasil. A adaptaÃÃo do modelo consistiu na resoluÃÃo numÃrica das equaÃÃes diferenciais de Streeter-Phelps, considerando o efeito de vazÃes incrementais e lanÃamentos de esgoto ao longo dos trechos, assim como a variabilidade das seÃÃes dos rios e tributÃrios. Para calibraÃÃo do modelo, incluindo o ajuste dos coeficientes de reaeraÃÃo (K2) e remoÃÃo de DBO (Kd), foram utilizados os dados do Plano de Gerenciamento das Ãguas da Bacia do Rio Jaguaribe. Os resultados da calibraÃÃo mostraram que esse modelo simplificado representou bem o balanÃo entre OD e DBO em uma grande bacia semiÃrida, apresentando um bom ajuste para os dois parÃmetros. Para OD, o desvio mÃdio foi de 8,44% e 6,04% para o fim e inÃcio da estaÃÃo chuvosa, respectivamente. Jà para DBO, os desvios foram de 18,51% e 30,43% para as duas estaÃÃes, respectivamente. Nos dois perÃodos, o OD manteve-se dentro dos padrÃes para Classe 2 da resoluÃÃo CONAMA 357/2005 em todo o trecho e a DBO infringiu este limite em um pequeno trecho prÃximo à cidade de TauÃ. Com o modelo jà calibrado, foram simulados trÃs cenÃrios: uma grande cheia, utilizando como vazÃo de referÃncia o Q10 de uma sÃrie histÃrica do Jaguaribe; estiagem, utilizando o Q50 da sÃrie histÃrica; e, implantaÃÃo de uma ETE com remoÃÃo de 80% de DBO em todas as sedes. As simulaÃÃes apresentaram resultados coerentes e que servem como base para o gerenciamento dos recursos hÃdricos da bacia estudada.

But This Is What I See; This Is What I See: Re-imagining Gendered Subjectivity Through The Woman Artist In Phelps, Johnstone, And Woolf

Since the publication of Laura Mulvey's influential article 'Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,' in which she identifies the pervasive presence of the male gaze in Hollywood cinema, scholars have sought to account for the female spectator in her paradigm of gendered vision. This thesis suggests that women writers have long debated the problem of the female spectator through literary depictions of the female artist. Women writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries'including Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Edith Johnstone, and Virginia Woolf'recognized the power of the woman artist to undermine the trope of the male gazing subject and a passive female object. Examining Phelps's The Story of Avis (1877), Johnstone's A Sunless Heart (1894), and Woolf's To the Lighthouse (1927) illustrates how the woman artist's active vision disrupts Mulvey's 'active/male and passive/female' binary of vision. Phelps's painter-heroine Avis destabilizes the power of the male gaze not only by exerting her own vision, but also by acting as an active object to manipulate the way she is seen. Johnstone uses artist Gasparine to demonstrate the dangers of vision shaped by either aesthetic or political conventions, suggesting that even feminist idealism can promote the objectification of its heroines. Finally, Woolf redefines the terms of objectification through painter Lily Briscoe, whose vision imbues material objects with subjectivity, thereby going beyond the boundaries between male and female to blur the distinction between subject and object. Through their novels, Phelps, Johnstone, and Woolf suggest that depictions of human experience need to be radically re-thought in order to adequately represent the complexity of subjectivity.

Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Water Quality Models are mathematical representations of ecological systems and they play a major role in the planning and management of water resources and aquatic environments. Important decisions concerning capital investment and environmental consequences often rely on the results of Water Quality Models and it is therefore very important that decision makers are aware and understand the uncertainty associated with these models. The focus of this study was on the use of Monte Carlo Simulation for the quantification of prediction uncertainty associated with Water Quality Models. Two types of uncertainty exist: Epistemic Uncertainty and Aleatory Uncertainty. Epistemic uncertainty is a result of a lack of knowledge and aleatory uncertainty is due to the natural variability of an environmental system. It is very important to distinguish between these two types of uncertainty because the analysis of a model’s uncertainty depends on it. Three different configurations of Monte Carlo Simulation in the analysis of uncertainty were discussed and illustrated: Single Phase Monte Carlo Simulation (SPMCS), Two Phase Monte Carlo Simulation (TPMCS) and Parameter Monte Carlo Simulation (PMCS). Each configuration of Monte Carlo Simulation has its own objective in the analysis of a model’s uncertainty and depends on the distinction between the types of uncertainty. As an experiment, a hypothetical river was modelled using the Streeter-Phelps model and synthetic data was generated for the system. The generation of the synthetic data allowed for the experiment to be performed under controlled conditions. The modelling protocol followed in the experiment included two uncertainty analyses. All three types of Monte Carlo Simulations were used in these uncertainty analyses to quantify the model’s prediction uncertainty in fulfilment of their different objectives. The first uncertainty analysis, known as the preliminary uncertainty analysis, was performed to take stock of the model’s situation concerning uncertainty before any effort was made to reduce the model’s prediction uncertainty. The idea behind the preliminary uncertainty analysis was that it would help in further modelling decisions with regards to calibration and parameter estimation experiments. Parameter uncertainty was reduced by the calibration of the model. Once parameter uncertainty was reduced, the second uncertainty analysis, known as the confirmatory uncertainty analysis, was performed to confirm that the uncertainty associated with the model was indeed reduced. The two uncertainty analyses were conducted in exactly the same way. In conclusion to the experiment, it was illustrated how the quantification of the model’s prediction uncertainty aided in the calculation of a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). The Margin of Safety (MOS) included in the TMDL could be determined based on scientific information provided by the uncertainty analysis. The total MOS assigned to the TMDL was -35% of the mean load allocation for the point source. For the sake of simplicity load allocations from non-point sources were disregarded. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Watergehalte modelle is wiskundige voorstellings van ekologiese sisteme en speel ’n belangrike rol in die beplanning en bestuur van waterhulpbronne en wateromgewings. Belangrike besluite rakende finansiële beleggings en besluite rakende die omgewing maak dikwels staat op die resultate van watergehalte modelle. Dit is dus baie belangrik dat besluitnemers bewus is van die onsekerhede verbonde met die modelle en dit verstaan. Die fokus van hierdie studie het berus op die gebruik van die Monte Carlo Simulasie om die voorspellingsonsekerhede van watergehalte modelle te kwantifiseer. Twee tipes onsekerhede bestaan: Epistemologiese onsekerheid en toeval afhangende onsekerheid. Epistemologiese onsekerheid is die oorsaak van ‘n gebrek aan kennis terwyl toeval afhangende onsekerheid die natuurlike wisselvalligheid in ’n natuurlike omgewing behels. Die veiligheidgrens (MOS) ingesluit in die TMDL kon vasgestel word deur die gebruik van wetenskaplike kennis wat voorsien is deur die onsekerheidsanalise. Die MOS het bestaan uit -35% van die gemiddelde toegekende lading vir puntbelasting van besoedeling in die rivier. Om die eksperiment eenvoudig te hou is verspreide laste van besoedeling nie gemodelleer nie.

Genetic variation in Atlantic yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) to assess stock structure and reproductive variance

The population genetic structure of Atlantic yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) has received little attention despite the substantial fishing mortality of juveniles caused by purse seining around fish aggregating devices in the Gulf of Guinea targeting multi-species schools that also include similarly sized skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and bigeye tuna (T. obesus). We used sequence data from 355 bp of the mitochondrial control region I as well as six microsatellite loci to examine: (1) population structure, and (2) to look for evidence of reproductive variance. We analyzed two samples of adults from the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and one sample of early juveniles (20-50 mm) from the Gulf of Guinea (GOG). We found no evidence of geographic or temporal differentiation among the samples. Accordingly, the null hypothesis of panmixia for yellowfin tuna in the Atlantic Ocean could not be rejected. A sudden expansion analysis based on mtDNA control region I sequence data of yellowfin tuna was highly significant. Time estimates for expansion were between 40,000 and 80,000 years before present. The associated high levels of homoplasy could be masking any existing population structure. Additional sampling from additional locations and across several years will be needed to test the hypothesis of panmixia. We also provide preliminary evidence of the Allendorf-Phelps effect, which may contribute to reproductive variance. This is the first evidence of this effect in any other tuna or pelagic species. Data indicates that early juveniles sharing the same mtDNA control region I haplotype were caught in the same tow and had a significant probability of halfsibship status as calculated from their haplotype and genotype at one microsatellite locus through kinship analysis. Sampling throughout the spawning season and across several years, as well as analysis with additional microsatellite loci that have a more even distribution of alleles, will be needed to more fully identify the sibling status of larvae and early juveniles caught in the same tow as well as the extent of this reproductive variance.
