Interdisciplinary Approach to Dizziness: Roles of Audiology and Physical Therapy

Akin, Faith W., Hall, Courtney D., Riska, Kristal M. 01 November 2013 (has links)
Dizziness is one of the most common reasons patients seek medical care, and because there are many causes of dizziness, management of these patients requires an interdisciplinary approach. Peripheral vestibular dysfunction is the most common cause of dizziness/vertigo diagnosed in specialty clinics. The purpose of this article is to present an interdisciplinary approach to the management of patients with vestibular dysfunction with a focus on the unique and overlapping contributions of audiology and physical therapy to vestibular assessment and rehabilitation.

Mind-Body Interventions for Chronic Pain and Trauma| A Qualitative Research Perspective on Group Psychotherapy Intervention

Kruer-Zerhusen, Adriane E. 05 April 2016 (has links)

This dissertation focused on advancing the current research on the connection between physical and psychological health. This study focused on two psychotherapy groups that integrate mind-body practices in the form of yoga, meditation, and relaxation. These groups were ongoing and are held once a week for one hour in an urban outpatient mental health clinic. Participants in these groups attended consistently for approximately 1-4 years and experienced a wide-range of trauma and chronic pain symptoms. Because the groups were active and running for several years, this study followed a qualitative research approach to comprehensively capture the participants’ subjective experience. Understanding the experience of these particular clients could prove to be advantageous to the field of psychology as it will help to elucidate the individual’s experience of an integrated mind-body modality for trauma and pain treatment. Using phenomenological interviews, this study explored the subjective experience of individuals in these groups. In-depth interview questions focused on participants’ reactions to the mind-body interventions for combined physical and psychological symptom relief.

The perceived attitudes, knowledge and barriers towards evidence-based practice (EBP) amongst physiotherapists in the United Republic of Tanzania.

Maigeh, Elias Peterson January 2004 (has links)
There has recently been an increased pressure in all-healthcare disciplines to provide interventions that are scientific, safe, efficient and cost-effective. Evidence-based practice is said to be the current best approach to address these attributes. All healthcare professionals including physiotherapists need to adopt it. Numerous physiotherapy studies have been carried out to ascertain the attitudes towards, knowledge of, engagement in as well as the barriers of evidence-based practice. These studies were mostly carried out in the developed countries and almost none in the devloping African countries. By means of an exploratory cross-sectional study, deploying both quantitative and qualitative methods, this study investigated the Tanzanian physiotherapists attitudes towards the concept of evidence-absed practice. The study also examined the knowledge that they possess, that could enable them engage in evidence-based related activities. In addition, this study explored the barriers they experience while practicing evidence-based practice.

January 2018 (has links)
Incentive feedback influences levels of daily physical activity, which reduces negative experiences that follow the cessation process. Objectives: Evaluate the influence of feedback on physical activity levels, abstinence, functional capacity, autonomic cardiac modulation, body composition and quality of life of abstinent smokers, as well as correlating the quality of life quality with the smoking load and the level of nicotine dependence. Methods: Smokers were randomized into two groups (feedback group - GF, control group - GC) and evaluated for physical activity levels by accelerometry, quality of life by SF-36, dependence levels and smoking load by the Fagerström questionnaire, functional by TC6, autonomic cardiac modulation by heart rate variability and body composition by electrical bioimpedance, at baseline, first, fourth and eighth week of abstinence. Results: There was no difference between groups for any of the evaluated variables. For both groups, there was a decrease in the steps / days (p = 0.002), the moderate activity (p <0.001) and the time in moderate to vigorous activity (p = 0.01), increase in sedentary activity time = 0.001) and its percentage (p = 0.005). Increased scores on physical aspects (p = 0.002), general health (p = 0.001) and mental health (p = 0.001) on quality of life. There was an increase in weight (p <0.001), BMI (p <0.001), fat mass (p = 0.003) and visceral f... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Estudo da postura corporal em portadores de disfonia / Investigation of the body posture of individuals with dysphonia

Nelli, Eloisa Aparecida 09 October 2006 (has links)
Objectives: This study analyzed the body posture of dysphonic patients and correlated them with individuals without voice alterations, in order to establish new therapeutic resources to rehabilitate the patients with dysphonia. Method: prospective study. A total of 43 individuals were analyzed (23 with dysphonia and 20 without voice alterations), of female gender, aged 18 to 40 years, without neurological, respiratory and rheumatic alterations. All patients were referred by the ENT Sector of Paulista Medical School (UNIFESP- EPM) after anamnesis, ENT examination and laryngoscopy, with diagnosis of functional or organofunctional dysphonia. The following parameters were investigated in this population: 1- Body posture in loco, 2- Photographic records, 3- Electromyographic examination, 4- Questionnaire on pain. Results: The results indicated no statistically significant difference with regard to the complaint, yet a larger number of individuals with dysphonia reported muscle tension and pain at the cervical region, where the larynx is located. Posture evaluation revealed that dysphonic individuals presented shoulder asymmetry, alterations in scapular positioning and rectification with forward displacement of the cervical region compared to the control group. The results of electromyographic analysis demonstrated increased activity of the suprahyoid muscle in prolonged emission, controlled emission and swallowing. The infrahyoid muscles exhibited altered electromyographic tracing during prolonged emission. Conclusion: It was concluded that there is correlation between individuals with dysphonia and posture alterations, based on the differences in clinical findings and electromyographic measurements.
