Petrography, mineral chemistry and Ar-Ar isotope characteristics of the ledig lujavrites, on the SW edge of the Pilanesberg Complex

MSc. (Geology) / The Mesoproterozoic Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex is located in the north central region of the Kaapvaal Craton of South Africa and is one of the largest alkaline intrusive bodies in the world. It is also one of the least studied due to the fact that the dominant exposure of the complex forms part of the Pilanesberg National Park. The Pilanesberg Complex intruded into the western limb of the Paleoproterozoic Bushveld Complex, the complex is a circular structure of 530km2 appearing on the map as a set of concentric rings of different varieties of syenites, capped by extrusive pyroclastic units and lavas. The present study is focused on the petrography and mineral chemistry of the rocks and minerals in an outcrop of mainly lujavrite, which is located in the Ledig nepheline syenite previously referred to as Ledig foyaite, named after an informal settlement by the name of Ledig which is situated approximately a kilometer south of the outcrop. This unit is emplaced in the southern region of the Pilanesberg complex and is believed to be a hybrid of the white nepheline syenite and the green nepheline syenite. A number of different rock types were examined from this outcrop, however, detailed work was only carried out on the lujavrites, in particular the eudialyte bearing lujavrites. The lujavrites consist of porphyroblasts of heterogeneously-sized feldspars, feldspathoids and mafic minerals set within a finer grained material. The bulk rock geochemical data on the Ledig lujavrites indicate considerable variation, but no obvious trends. A selected number of samples collected from the ledig lujavrite outcrop were geochemically analysed, these samples sit within the nepheline syenite field and have a shoshonitic affinity. The samples analysed have a relatively wide range of SiO2 content (20.39% to 52.67%), however the majority of the samples fall between 47.07 and 52.67%, the fluorite rich sample analysed has the lowest SiO2 as well as the lowest alkali content. The lujavrites and tinguaites are silica undersaturated and rich in alkalis. All the samples analysed are alkaline in nature and fall in the ferroan field. There is some variation in the SiO2 content and a large variation in Mg# in the sample population, this appears to be due to different proportions of minerals occurring as phenocrysts. No clear trends emerge, which is in part due to the very large differences in element concentrations within rock types with similar SiO2 content and Mg#. A lack of geochemical variation stemming from Abstract differentiation was expected as the samples were collected from a single outcrop essentially within a single lithology. There are a number of different phases of eudialyte that have been identified and studied from the Pilanesberg, at both the outcrop and in the northern area of the green lujavrites. At the Ledig lujavrite outcrop, there are euhedral magmatic eudialytes, which contain nepheline inclusions as well as post-magmatic eudialytes present in the samples studied. The two textural types have distinctly different chemical compositions. The majority of the feldspars present within the Ledig lujavrites appear, from their texture, to be primary magmatic minerals, however there are also feldspars present within the lujavrites which appear to be a product of secondary unmixing of feldspars as documented by the perthitic textures. Sodalite is present as a magmatic mineral; however, it is most commonly observed in the interstitial spaces and is thought to be an alteration product of nepheline. Geophysical investigation into the geology, geometry and geochronology of the South African Pilanesberg Complex and the Pilanesberg dyke system

Johannesburg, 2016 / The Mesoproterozoic Pilanesberg Complex, South Africa, is the world’s largest alkaline intrusive complex. Mapped geological field relationships suggest the Complex has circular inward dipping layers. However, it is unclear how the dipping layers extend at depth. As a result, the 3D geometry of the Pilanesberg Complex is unknown. Modelling of the Pilanesberg Complex uses 2D forward models as well as 3D forward and inversion, gravity and magnetic data models, to set limits on the 3D geometry of the Pilanesberg Complex. The 2D Bouguer gravity models and geology maps indicate that some of the Bushveld Complex Main Zone shifted to the west of the Pilanesberg Complex during emplacement. This, and a highly faulted country rock, accounts for a portion of how the host rock was able to accommodate the Pilanesberg Complex intrusion. The geometry of the Complex is explored with test gravity models where the model of outward dipping and vertically dipping cylinders are unable to match the Bouguer gravity signal over the Complex, but the inward dipping model matched the data to provide a possible solution for the geometry of the Complex. The Pilanesberg Complex geometry is modelled with 3D magnetic inversion, 3D forward gravity models and 2.5D gravity test profiles that were all constrained by the surface geology. The different models correlate so that best data fit for the Complex is represented by an overall inward dipping structure. Surface geological measurements indicate that the northern edge of the Complex dip out to the north. The 3D forward modelling was able to produce a positive solution that matched the gravity data with a northward dipping northern edge. The dipping northern edge is also observed on the University of British Columbia, UBC, 3D gravity inversion and the Euler deconvolution gravity profile solutions. The depth of the Pilanesberg Complex from 3D forward gravity modelling is estimated to be between 5 and 6 km. The Complex is suggested to have undergone block movement where the northern block and southern block are separated by the 30 km long Vlakfontein fault, which bisects the Complex from the north-east to the south-west. The image processing contact depth, Euler deconvolution solutions and the 3D Voxi inversion model suggest that the fresh bedrock is closer to surface in the north, while the southern block appears to be approximately 1km deeper than the northern block. The northern dip and block movement are explained by complicated structural events that include trap door graben settling which hinged on the northern edge as well as faulting and external block movement during a regional lateral extensional event. The Pilanesberg Complex intruded during a larger system of alkaline intrusions, known as the Pilanesberg Alkaline Province. The intrusions are associated with the Province due to their ages and chemical affinity. This Province includes two dyke swarms that radiate to the north-west and south of the Pilanesberg Complex, as well as smaller circular clinopyroxenite intrusions throughout the Bushveld Complex. The Pilanesberg dyke system and the circular clinopyroxenite intrusions are reversely magnetised with IGRF corrected values ranging between -150 to -320 nT compared to the normally magnetised 166 to 330 nT values of the Pilanesberg Complex. This suggests that a magnetic reversal occurred between the emplacement of the Pilanesberg Complex and the dyke System. The age data of the Complex and dyke Swarm suggest a magnetic reversal could have occurred between the emplacement of the Pilanesberg Complex and the Pilanesberg dyke System. The Complex is dated at 1602 ± 38 Ma and 1583 ± 10 Ma, from two white foyaite samples from the southern edge (using 40Ar/39Ar amphibole spectrum analysis). These ages are vastly different from previously reported ages, which ranged between 1200 Ma and 1450 Ma (Harmer R., 1992; Hansen et al., 2006). The error analysis has improved considerably from the published dates making the proposed dates plausible for the intrusion of the Pilanesberg Complex as the first and main intrusion of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Province. The Pilanesberg dyke System intruded much later between 1219 ± 6 Ma to 1268 ± 10 Ma for the red syenite dyke samples (using 40Ar/39Ar on feldspars spectrum analysis) and 1139 ± 18 Ma obtained for the grey syenite dyke (using 40Ar/39Ar on amphiboles inverse isochronal analysis). The dyke Swarm dates are significantly younger than the previously published ages for the dykes, which were between 1290 Ma and 1330 Ma (Van Niekerk, 1962; Emerman, 1991). / LG2017

(Geography) / This study concentrates. not only on the physical and chemical factors influencing erosion levels in the Pilanesberg area, but also on the impact of anthropogenic factors such as artificial drainage and other cultural irregularities that have modified the local catchment in the Pilanesberg area. For this reason, a comparative study of soil erosion has been made across the perimeter of the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve. The study'aimed to analyze the impact of climatic factors, chemical and physical properties of the soils on the local erosion system. Possible triggering mechanisms of the erosion have been discussed and conservation concerns in the Pilanesberg area have been raised. Of major importance in this study has been the'estimation of soil loss rates across the perimeter of the PNR.. This was premised on the 'rationale that population pressure has an impact on the local erosion system, Through the' analysis of sediment trapped at the monitoring sites it has been possible to indicate the tremendous impact of population pressure on the slopes of the Pilanesberg hills, just outside of the PNR. The rate at which soil is lost on the surrounding rural landscape in the Pilanesberg area has been found to be on average. nearly four times higher than inside of the PNR.

Testing an alternative measure of progress : the case of the Bakgatla-ba- Kgafela Nation

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An alternative measure of progress to GDP was evaluated in the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela tribe (in total N = 119) using subjective wellbeing or happiness. The major dimensions of happiness were assumed to be physical, mental, social, spiritual, educational, environmental, occupational, and financial wellbeing or income and governance. Amongst the Bakgatla, correlation testing identified two clusters or core sub-sets of relationships, based on the strength of relationships, which appear to work in parallel to one another, with divergent outcomes of either increased happiness or income. The first cluster is related to traditional economic rationality and consists of Education Level, Income and Employment Security. The second cluster, more closely related to principles of sustainable development, consists of Social Wellbeing, Environmental Wellbeing and Happiness. An insignificant correlation between Income and Happiness exists. A multiple regression analysis was conducted with Happiness as the dependent variable and the major wellbeing dimensions as the independent variables (R² = .286). Statistically significant Standardized Beta’s calculated in the regression analysis are Social wellbeing (0.464), Educational level (-0.226), Governance (0.205) and Physical wellbeing (0.194). Although a cause-and-effect relationship can’t be assumed, the supposition is that ceteris paribus: • Happy people tend to have higher levels of social wellbeing or social capital; • The more educated people are, the less happy they are; • The more trust people have in public institutions and the state, the happier they are; and • Happy people tend to be healthier. Therefore, holding all other explanatory variables constant, it can be assumed that income has no bearing on subjective wellbeing. Therefore we reject the Null Hypothesis that the Bakgatla’s progress is purely determined by their annual per capita income. The relationship between income and subjective wellbeing for the Bakgatla follows global patterns - an initial increase in happiness as income increases is pronounced but ‘flattens’ somewhat as a higher level of income is reached and diminishes as very high levels of income are achieved. The critical turning point where income has a diminishing rate of return on satisfaction is around R20 000 per annum per person. This corroborates the human needs theories which proposes that a hierarchy of needs for human beings exist and until the basic needs are met, higher needs cannot be met. The present findings have implications for the Bakgatla: in order to increase happiness and promote development, the Bakgatla should focus on four key aspects: meeting basic needs; increasing social capital; increasing trust in the Tribal Authorities; and improving physical health. In addition, education and environmental wellbeing should also be focal points but changes need to be made to the education curriculum so that there is a strong focus on sustainable development. An important policy implication that the Bakgatla need to consider, is balancing the needs of the current generation with the needs of future generations. Economic growth or income may bring a certain amount of happiness; environmental destruction, crime and human health implications may outweigh these benefits and happiness in both the current and future generations. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie is subjektiewe welstand of geluk as alternatief vir bruto binnelandse produk (BBP) as vooruitgangsmaatstaf by die Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela-stam (altesaam N = 119) ondersoek. Die veronderstelde hoofaspekte van geluk wat in die studie getoets is, is fisiese welstand, geesteswelstand, maatskaplike welstand, spirituele welstand, opvoedkundige welstand, omgewingswelstand, beroepswelstand, finansiële welstand of inkomste, en bestuur. Korrelasietoetse onder die Bakgatla het twee beduidende groepe of kernsubstelle verwantskappe uitgewys, welke groepe oënskynlik gelyklopend funksioneer, met uiteenlopende dog nieverwante uitkomste van hetsy verhoogde geluk of verhoogde inkomste. Belangrike beleidsimplikasie wat die Bakgatla moet oorweeg, is om ewewig te vind tussen die behoeftes van die huidige geslag en die behoeftes van toekomstige geslagte. Ekonomiese groei of inkomste kan inderdaad sekere hoeveelheid geluk skep. Tog kan omgewingsvernietiging, misdaad en swak menslike gesondheid hierdie voordele en geluk in sowel die huidige as toekomstige geslagte oorskadu. Bykomende navorsing word vir die toekoms aanbeveel.

Investigating an environmental education curriculum to a developing society's needs: a case study of the programme offered at the Pilanesberg National Park, Bophuthatswana

The Environmental Education programme offered at the Gold Fields Environmental Education Centre (GFEE Centre) in the Pilanesberg National Park, Bophuthatswana, was initiated in response to requests from schools in Bophuthatswana to visit game reserves as 'syllabus related school activities'. Evaluative research into the GFEE Centre programme by an external researcher indicated that the learning experiences largely concentrated on cognitive development, and neglected to influence affective and psychomotor development. After a number of adaptations to the programme, which emphasised a more child-centred approach it was realised that little was known about the background and learning needs of the predominantly BaTswana school children. It was felt by the researcher that the learning activities provided at the GFEE Centre could also possibly be biased by a Western, scientific orientation which possibly lacked relevance to the cultural backgrounds of the pupils. The researcher used an action research approach in a number of workshops with a purposive sample of BaTswana primary school teachers, to gather data. The teachers were encouraged to critically reflect on the background and learning-needs of BaTswana children, with specific regard to environmental issues and worldviews. The information provided by the teachers' reflective deliberations and a seperate research project with school children, indicated that primary school children in Bophuthatswana tend to follow accepted human development patterns in their perceptions of the environment. The influence of either a predominantly rural or urban upbringing during a child's early formative years was considered by the teachers to be significant in determining worldviews, and culture was considered to have an influence on children's learning processes. Their beliefs and experiences were used by them in generating suggestions to correct the GFEE Centre programme. The teachers' also highlighted the fact that there were a number of socio-cultural and institutional issues which influenced the effectiveness of the GFEE Centre programme.

A critical analysis of community participation and benefits from conservation : a comparative study of Mthethomusha Game Reserve and the Pilanesberg National Park.

This dissertation is an attempt to analyse and address some of the many and complex issues revolving around protected area - community relationships. The success of these relationships are essential if the mission of protected areas are to be achieved. Due to large scale agriculture, high density populations and environmental degradation protected areas are often looked upon as a means to conserve biodiversity. It is for this reason that they play an important role in the natural environmental of South Africa. However, there is a growing realisation that protected areas will not survive unless they become relevant to the communities that surround them. These cOI11nlunities are often characterised by high density populations and low levels of infrastructural and economic development. These developmental requirements need to be considered by protected area management, and a dedicated effort is required by protected areas to assist in meeting these needs. However, the relationship between protected areas and C0111nlunities should not simply focus on meeting the developmental needs of the community, relationships need to allow for communities to participate in decisions and activities that directly impact of their lives. Benefits need to accrue to communities from protected areas for them to support the concepts of conservation. Benefits need to be tangible, intangible and empowering for them to have real meaningful impacts on the communities. Communities need to be actively involve in all aspects of the protected area management and links need to be forged between conservation and development, so that the socio-economic condition of those living closest to protected areas improves. This study uses the relationship between Mthethomusha Game Reserve and the surrounding Mpakeni conmunity, and the Pilanesberg National Park and the neighbouring Bakgatla community to investigate many issues, including the manner in which communities participate and benefit from conservation. The findings of this study reflect that the relationships between communities and protected areas are dependent on a number of factors including~ ownership~ socio-economic condition of the surrounding community~ institutional structures and capacity of the community formal agreements; history of the fonl1ati~n of the protect~d a~ea~ reliance on the protected area for survival and the meaningfulness and appropriateness of the benefits received from the protected area. The experiences of the two case studies has been analysed and compared to develop a theoretical model for community - protected area relationships.
