Connectivity of the space of pointed hyperbolic surfaces:Warakkagun, Sangsan January 2021 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Ian Biringer / We consider the space $\rootedH2$ of all complete hyperbolic surfaces without boundary with a basepoint equipped with the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff topology. Continuous paths within $\rootedH2$ arising from certain deformations on a hyperbolic surface and concrete geometric constructions are studied. These include changing some Fenchel-Nielsen parameters of a subsurface, pinching a simple closed geodesic to a cusp, and inserting an infinite strip along a proper bi-infinite geodesic. We then use these paths to show that $\rootedH2$ is path-connected and that it is locally weakly connected at points whose underlying surfaces are either the hyperbolic plane or hyperbolic surfaces of the first kind. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College. Ribosomal protein mutants and their effects on plant growth and development2012 October 1900 (has links)
Ribosomes, large enzymatic complexes containing an RNA catalytic core, drive protein synthesis in all living organisms. 80S cytoplasmic eukaryotic ribosomes are comprised of four rRNAs and approximately 80 ribosomal proteins (r-proteins). R-proteins are encoded by gene families with large families (average of twelve members) predominating in mammals and smaller families (two to seven members) in plants. Increased ribosome heterogeneity is possible in plant ribosomes due to multiple transcriptionally active members in each family, whereas, in mammalian r-protein gene families, only one member is typically active. Multiple functional paralogs provide for greater plasticity in response to environmental/developmental cues, as well as, increasing the possibility of individual paralogs procuring or retaining extraribosomal functions. This research investigated the effects of r-protein mutations on plant growth and development. Through RNA interference (RNAi) mediated knockdown (KD) of type I (cytoplasmic: RPS15aA/D and F) and type II (non-cytosolic: RPS15aB and E) RPS15a family members I was able to confirm the delineation between the two types. Subcellular localization of the type I isoforms was nuclear/nucleolar while localization of type II isoforms was non-mitochondrial and probably cytosolic. Illumina sequencing of two r-protein mutant transcriptomes, pfl1 (rps18a) and pfl2 (rps13a), identified a novel set of up and down regulated genes, previously unknown or linked to r-protein mutants. The 20 genes identified were classified into four groups (1) plant defense, (2) transposable elements, (3) nitrogen metabolism and (4) genes with unknown function. Illumina miRNOME analysis revealed no changes in the miRNA profile of pfl1 and pfl2 plants. These data do not support the previously proposed theory that a disruption in ribosome biogenesis (by decreased r-protein synthesis) disrupts miRNA-mediated degradation of a range of auxin response genes. Finally, a novel double r-protein mutant, rps18a:HF/RPL18B, presented a late flowering/thickened bolt phenotype not seen in a rps13a:HF/RPL18B mutant, suggesting that RPS18A has an extraribosomal role in plant growth and development in Arabidopsis.

There is a foundation in the real world of human feeling, and while there is much grief and sorrow in this community, there are also possibilities for happiness. The connection to death and loss is what gives much in this feminine world meaning. Grief is only a part of the journey. Out of death and sorrow come strength and a restoration to wholeness. Mrs. Todd has learned this and she passes her knowledge down to the narrator. The narrator’s journey is a return to a simpler, older way of life. It is a return to the mother, but it is also a return to self, an inversion of a trip to the frontier. The narrator’s connection to Mrs. Todd and Mrs. Blackett helps her to reconnect with and restore herself.

Authorizing the Reader: Narrative Construction in Sarah Orne Jewett's The Country of the Pointed Firs and Willa Cather's My AntoniaBuck-Perry, Cheri 03 May 1995 (has links)
Although Willa Cather's My Antonia and Sarah Orne Jewett's The Country of the Pointed Firs have been highly regarded by numerous literary critics, neither text conforms to conventional expectations for narrative content or structure. Episodic in construction, the novels lack such traditional narrative ingredients as conflict, action, drama, and romance. Furthermore, explicit connections between episodes and stories related within the narratives are not drawn for the reader. Formalist and structuralist critics have approached the problem of structure in Cather and Jewett's works by employing conventional literary tools of analysis, by "unearthing" the narrative elements that we as readers and critics have come to expect: identifiable structure, a plot complete with conflict and resolution, and characters that develop. Likewise, many feminist critics have sought to uncover in Cather and Jewett's work the ideal elements for a woman's text such as the employment of a feminine method of writing. Unfortunately, both approaches utilize interpretive templates that would pin down meaning and thus "solve" the texts' seeming peculiarities. Instead of prescribing structure according to accepted conventions or ideals, this study attempts to describe the narrative construction of My Antonia and The Country of the Pointed Firs. I argue that these texts are not structures in a traditional linear fashion, but rather are "conversations" among a variety of "readers" -the narrator, other characters, and the actual readers of the text - who attempt to construct an understanding of the world around them, or the meaning of the overall story. The chapters in this thesis explore this dialogue present in Cather and Jewett's work; the various participating, as well as their proposed constructions. Both Cather and Jewett, through their innovative narrative techniques, dramatize the human need to make sense of life, our capacity to create meaning, and at the same time the fallibility of such constructions. By employing a form which resists conventional strategies of explanation, Cather and Jewett encourage an interpretative approach that favors cumulative readings, a certain responsiveness, and an allowance for indeterminacy.

<p dir="ltr">In this thesis, we develop an algebraic framework for colored, colored connected, semi-grouplike-flavored, and pathlike co-/bi-/Hopf algebras, which are essential in combinatorics, topology, number theory, and physics. Moreover, we introduce and explore simply colored comonoid, which generalises the notion of colored conilpotent coalgebra. The simply colored structure captures the essence of being connected and give unified treatment of all connected co-/bi-algebras. </p><p dir="ltr">As a consequence, we establish precise conditions for the invertibility of characters essential for renormalization in the Connes-Kreimer formulation, supported by examples from these fields. In order to construct antipodes, we discuss formal localization constructions and quantum deformations. These allow to define and explain the appearance of Brown style coactions. We also investigate the relation between pointed coalgebras and color conilpotent coalgebras. </p><p dir="ltr">Using these results, we interpret all relevant coalgebras through categorical constructions, linking the bialgebra structures to Feynman categories and applying our developed theory in this context. This comprehensive framework provides a robust foundation for future research in mathematical physics and algebra.</p>

The diploma project called "Problems with Violence in School Educational Environment" is divided into the parts - Introduction, Theoretical Part, Empirical Part, Conclusion. The Theoretical Part is separated into the five chapters - Demarcation and Definition of Concepts, Division of Aggression, Shows of Children's Violent Manners, Shows of Adolescents' Manners, Resolution of Aggression. The Empirical Part of the thesis verifies set hypotheses and targets. It is investigated, what type of aggression teachers meet towards their own person in their occupation, whether they meet more with aggression of boys or girls. The attributes of aggressors are also researched - what school results they have according to their teachers, what sort of families they come from. There is monitored link between action games or action movies and possible connection with frequency of aggression. During the study, we are discovering how often teachers in schools solve the problems connected with pupils' aggression and in which taught subjects violence and lack of discipline occur according to teachers' experience. Some educators state experience with cyber bullying in their jobs.
