Critical appraisal of the mutual engagement of the African states in the african peer review and universal periodic review mechanisms : a human rights perspectiveJonas, Obonye 10 October 1900 (has links)
We must face the matter squarely that where there is something wrong in how we govern
ourselves, it must be said that the fault is not in our stars but in ourselves. We know that we
have it in ourselves, as Africans, to change all this. We must assert our will to do so – we must say
that there is no obstacle big enough to stop us from bringing about an African renaissance –
Nelson Mandela.
Africa’s woes - social disequilibrium, civil wars, ethnic unrest, poverty, corruption, disease, bad
governance, violations of human rights, decrepit institutions, are all public knowledge and are hardly
new to academic discourse. They have been the subject of several studies and analyses by scholars,
politicians and policy makers. / Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)) -- University of Pretoria, 2010. / A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Law University of Pretoria, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Masters of Law (LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa). Lietuvos politikų stereotipai šalies spaudoje: dienraščių "Lietuvos rytas" ir "Kauno diena" analizė / The stereotypes of Lithuanian politicians in the press. The analysis of daily papers „Lietuvos rytas“ and „Kauno diena“Kapočiūtė, Rūta 15 June 2010 (has links)
Magistro darbe nagrinėjama, kaip šalies spauda reprezentuoja politikus ir kokius politikų stereotipus kuria dažniausiai – palankius ar nepalankius patiems politikams. Analizuojami du vieni didžiausių šalies dienraščių: „Lietuvos rytas“ ir „Kauno diena“. Tyrimu siekiama patvirtinti tris pagrindines darbe keltas hipotezes: 1) Kokia politinė informacija ir kaip pateikta pasieks skaitytojus lemia žiniasklaidos priemonės, o ne politikai; 2) Lietuvos spaudoje pateikiamos politinės naujienos stokoja objektyvumo ir nešališkumo; 3) Dienraščiuose pateikiama politinė informacija dažniau yra nepalanki politikams, taip kuriami negatyvūs politikų stereotipai;
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / This MA thesis researches how Lithuanian politicians are being represented in the press
and what political stereotypes (favorable or unfavorable to the politicians) are being created. Two
main Lithuanian daily newspapers – „Lietuvos rytas“ and „Kauno diena“ – were analysed. The
research tends to prove the three main hypothesis: 1) What political information will reach the
readers and the way it is covered depends on media, not on politicians; 2) The political news,
published in Lithuanian press, lacks objectivity and impartiality; 3) The majority of daily political
information is unfavorable to the politicians. That is the way the negative stereotypes of politicians
are being created.
The reserach consists on several stages. Firstly, what information – favorable or
unfavorable to the politicians – is published more often. Also, it was analysed wether political
notes were interpretative or descriptive. This stage contains quantative and qualitative content
analysis of extended notes, where state‘s politicians (the members of Parliament and Government)
are mentioned. The period of the research was a month (04 13 – 05 13). It was stated, the majority
of the notes were written in descirptive style, nevertheless, even quite impartial notes were mostly
unfavorable to the politicians.
Having the aim to discover what political stereotypes are being created in the press, the
discourse analysis of newspapers were made. Three main political stereotypes – „politician -
swindler“... [to full text]

A Twitter revolution? : uses & gratifications and credibility of TwitterKraft, Rachel Hana 28 October 2010 (has links)
This study examines how and why individuals use the social networking site Twitter and explores how they perceive the credibility of tweets by politicians. Using a survey to sample adults, it shows that people primarily use the medium to get timely content, for entertainment, and for social interaction, and that interactive tweets by elected officials are viewed as most credible, even if people are not likely to use the medium to directly communicate with politicians themselves. It concludes that Twitter’s potential to change how people communicate with each other and with politicians is strong, but that it has not yet been fully realized. / text

Rhetoric and Campaign Language: Explaining New Electoral Success of African American Politicians in Non-Minority DistrictsHall, Precious D 16 April 2012 (has links)
My dissertation seeks to answer two important questions in African American politics: What accounts for the new electoral success of African American candidates in non-minority majority districts, and is there some sort of specific rhetoric used in the campaign speeches of these African American politicians? I seek to show that rhetoric matters and that there is a consistent post-racial language found in the speeches of successful African American elected officials. In experimental studies, I show that that this post-racial language is effective in shaping perceptions of these politicians and is a contributing factor to their success. In addition, I show that the language found in the speeches of successful African American elected officials is not found in the speeches of unsuccessful African American politicians running for a similar office. I engage in this research by conducting experiments using campaign speeches from 2010 primary and general election candidates, conducting quantitative text analysis, and performing ethnographical interviewing with successful African American elected officials.
