Probing the standard model and beyond at high-energy collidersHeyssler, Matthias January 1998 (has links)
The thesis covers the following topics: Assuming a partonic structure of the Pomeron we give predictions for diffractive heavy flavour production at the Tevatron and the LHC and diffractive Higgs production at the LHC in leading-order approximation. For the latter the dominant background processes are also considered. We obtain results on single as well as double diffractive cross sections assuming a Donnachie-Landshoff-type Pomeron flux factor. Measurements of the single inclusive jet cross section at the Tevatron by the CDF Collaboration maybe suggest a modified picture of QCD in the large E(_T) range. A parameter fit of a neutral heavy vector boson Z(^1) to the CDF data, in leading order perturbation theory, is performed, and the question of how the corresponding single inclusive jet cross-sections and the dijet angular distributions at the LHC are affected by this additional Z' is discussed. We test a model, motivated by the former R(_b) and R(_c) "crisis", which contains extra vector fermions. We suggest an alternative indirect test of the possible existence of new heavy quark flavours at the LEP2 collider, which turns out to give the clearest signal. We calculate qq cross sections within this framework, including one loop corrections. Hadronic antenna patterns can provide a valuable diagnostic tool for probing the origin of the reported excess of high x, Q(^2) events at HERA. We present quantitative predictions for the distributions of soft particles and jets in standard deep inelastic scattering eq → eq events and in events corresponding to the production of a narrow colour-triplet scalar resonance. We also study the patterns corresponding to Higgs production and decay in high- energy hadron-hadron collisions. In particular, the signal gg → H → bb and background gg → bb processes are shown to have very different radiation patterns, and this may provide a useful additional method for distinguishing Higgs signal events from the QCD background. The process eq → eq + γ exhibits radiation zeros, i.e. configurations of the final-state particles for which the scattering amplitude vanishes. We study these zeros for both e(^+)u and e(^+)d scattering. The latter exhibits a new type of zero which to our knowledge has not previously been identified. The observability of radiation zeros at HERA is discussed. In the framework of this new type of zero we also study the process e(^+)e(^-) → qqγ. We calculate the positions of these zeros for u-quark and d-quark production and assess the feasibifity of identifying the zeros in experiments at high energies. The radiation zeros are shown to occur also for massive quarks, and we discuss how the bbγ final state may offer a particularly clean environment in which to observe them.

Estudo do Fluxo de Energia em Colisões Hadrônicas e em Fotoprodução a Altas Energias / Study of Energy Flow in Hadronic Collisions and photoproduction at High EnergiesDurães, Francisco de Oliveira 27 November 1998 (has links)
We present and apply to several situations a model for particle production. With this model it is possible to understand the energy flow in hadronic reactíons, in photoproduction and also ma.ke predictions for the behaviour of some observables at higher energies. It is also possible to study the individual contributions of soft and semíhard interactions and the individual contributions coming from the central and fragmentation regions. We analyse charged and charmed particle production data at several energies. We predíct, among other things, that an increasing fraction of the reaction energy is going to be released in the central region. As a consequence the asymmetry observed in charm production will decrease. We study and propose as experimental test to heavy meson production from light quark fragmentation.

A seleção de eventos do tipo DPE foi possível através de um estudo sobre o comportamento da energia depositada nas células do calorímetro hadrônico, procurando por dois intervalos de rapidez - uma das assinaturas do evento DPE. / This thesis presents the first DØ measurement of the fraction of Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE) in a central dijet production. An extensive study on the behavior of the energy deposited on the hadronic calorimeter cell was performed. In the search for DPE events the goal was to find gap (or low activity) in two forward calorimeter regions, which is a signature of Double Pomeron Exchange events.

Studies of Diffractive Scattering of Photons at Large Momentum Transfer And of the VFPS Detector at HERAHreus, Tomas 26 September 2008 (has links)
In this thesis, two studies of the diffractive phenomena in the electron proton collisions with the H1 detector at HERA are presented.
The first is the study of the inclusive elastic diffractive events $ep o eXp$ in the regime of high photon virtuality ($Q^2 >$ few GeV$^2$), with the scattered proton detected by the Very Forward Proton Spectrometer (VFPS). The VFPS detector, designed to measure diffractive scattered protons with high acceptance, has been installed in 2004 to benefit from the HERA II luminosity increase. The selected event sample of an integrated luminosity of 130.2 pb$^{-1}$ was collected in years 2006-2007. Data sample distributions are compared to the prediction
based on the diffractive parton distribution functions, as extracted from the H1 measurement of the diffractive structure function $F_2^{D(3)}$ at HERA I. After the study of the VFPS efficiency, the VFPS acceptance as a function of $xpom$ is estimated and studied in relation to the forward proton beam optics.
The second study leads to the cross section measurement of the diffractive scattering of quasi-real photons off protons, $gamma p o gamma Y$, with the large momentum transfer, $|t|$. The final state photon is separated from the proton dissociation system, $Y$, by a large rapidity gap and has a large transverse momentum, $p_T > 2$ GeV. Large $p_T$ imply the presence of the hard scale $t$ ($|t| simeq p_T^2$) and allows predictions of the perturbative QCD to be applied. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity 46.2 pb$^{-1}$
of data collected in the 1999-2000 running period. Cross sections $sigma(W)$ as a function of the incident photon-proton centre of mass energy, $W$, and $ud sigma/ud |t|$ are measured in the range $Q^2 < 0.01$ GeV$^2$, $175 < W < 247$ GeV, $4 < |t| < 36$ GeV$^2$ and $ypom < 0.05$. The cross section measurements have been compared to predictions of LLA BFKL calculations.
