Energy Efficiency and Differentiated QoS in Next Generation PONs

Chen, Shen 03 February 2012 (has links)
Energy conservation in next generation Passive Optical Network system (NG-PON) has gained more and more attention. NG-PON system can not only deliver best-effort data traffic, but also real-time data traffic, e.g. voice and video, that have strict bandwidth, delay, and jitter requirements. To meet the energy and service requirements, a NG-PON system must have energy efficiency and differentiated QoS mechanism built in. Few research efforts have been reported on maximizing energy efficiency while maintaining QoS in the fairly new PON system design. We have extended the Upstream Centric Scheme (UCS-based) scheduling scheme idea into a novel QoS-differentiated energy-efficient PON system consisting of two main modules: firstly, the proposed differentiated QoS analytical model is described in detail to reduce the packet delay in the upstream traffic scheduling. The simulations further demonstrate the QoS metrics of the system: packet delay, bandwidth utilization, dropped packet rate, and queue length. Secondly, a novel analysis is proposed for downstream traffic scheduling with limited service discipline at Optical Line Terminal (OLT) side under the UCS-based Green Bandwidth Allocation (GBA) framework. We, first, derive the mean packet delay expression of this model. Then, the sleep time for each Optical Network Unit (ONU) is derived by setting identical upstream/downstream transmission cycle time. Based on the analytical model, an approach is developed to save the maximum energy in a dynamic PON system while without violating the delay requirement. Moreover, simulation is conducted to verify the developed analytical model and the proposed approach. In the end, considering the differentiated QoS and downstream traffic scheduling, an algorithm of the energy efficient scheduling scheme is proposed as well under the UCS-based GBA.

Study of converged 60 GHz radio over fiber with WDM-PON access networks

Shao, Tong 25 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Hybrid analogue & digital access network architectures for the mobile/fixe infrastructure convergence

Frank, Florian 08 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In order to realize the convergence of the optical infrastructure of fixed and mobile access networks, the objective of this thesis is to study the solutions for distributing native radio carriers through typical optical access networks. The first Part describes the contexts and the main physical properties of the optical and radio access networks: from nowadays deployed Fiber To The Home (FTTH) systems, and their expected evolutions, to the current radio system Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) towards the expected requirements of modern mobile radio systems. This allows to settle the optical environment in which the Radio over Fiber(RoF)-functionalities will have to be integrated, and to know on which radio systems'figures of merits to focus on when implementing it. The second Part shows the benefit and possibilities of re-using the optical infrastructure of the fixed access networks for distributed radio systems. Then a review of the analog and digital RoF techniques is proposed, and their feasibility of integration into legacy FTTH systems is discussed. The third part deals with the computing and simulations of an analog RoF-system where the optical link is either passive or optically pre-amplified, and even boosted. The goal is to provide numerical results to the practical lab. results of the second half of the fourth part where the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) matters. Therefore successively formal expressions, numerical results for simple 2-tone signals and more realistic UMTS signals are considered. The fourth and last part deals with the obtained practical results. These can be split into two main categories : Error Vector Magnitude (EVM)-oriented results where an Avalanche Photo-Detector (APD) is used for legacy and extended-reach PON architectures using a direction shared Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) ; and an Adjacent/Alternate Channel power Leakage Ratio (ACLR)-driven part where the focus is seton a very critical figure of merit of radio systems, especially in the downlink. The latter part turned out to be mandatory and prevailing over the initially considered EVM concerns. Hence several RoF architectures, compatible with PONs, are introduced in order to overcome the non-linearities undergone by the RoF-signals, induced by the chromatic dispersion of the PON's fiber and the laser chirp, and degrading the ACLR performances

[en] MONITORING IN HYBRID FIBER-COPPER ACCESS NETWORKS / [pt] MONITORAMENTO EM REDES DE ACESSO HÍBRIDAS FIBRA ÓPTICA-CABO DE COBRE

ANDREA DANIELA BALDIVIESO MIRANDA 06 March 2017 (has links)
[en] This work shows the experimental development of a monitoring method that allows locate positions of failures in both optical fiber and copper cable links in the context of analogue radio signal transmission over fiber-extended copper mobile fronthaul networks (MFH). The MFH concept is based on transmission of radio signals using unique intermediate frequencies for the fiber and copper cable and a simple optical/electrical conversion unit in order to use existing copper cable installations. The method proposes to allocate the monitoring signal sweeping the frequency in a chosen band to a subcarrier channel. The monitoring signal is used to determine both, the fiber characteristics through the backscattering signal and also the copper cable link characteristics by the Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) technique. The results show that the hybrid monitoring technique is suitable for copper cable-extended radio access network, for which the WDM / SCM-PON technology has been used. In-service fiber monitoring is achievable with a spatial resolution of 10 m and a dynamic range of approximately 9dB. Open circuit faults in the copper line were localized with better than 1-m accuracy.

Lebreton, Aurélien 02 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis is part of the growing capacity of passive optical access networks. The works done during this thesis are based on the fact that current technologies, employing time division multiplexing, will reach their limits in the coming years and will no longer respond to changes in high bitrates requirements. The study of problems encountered during the current deployments led us to propose another form of multiplexing more suitable for bitrates requested by users: the FDM/FDMA PON, frequency division multiplexing. The work done in this thesis aim to demonstrate the feasibility of a such architecture in the laboratory. The objectives are to determine the achievable capacity, whether for the downlink (from central office to user) or the uplink (subscriber to central), but also to achieve a theoretical study to highlight the limitations of this solution. Algorithms for dynamic allocation of resources have been developed and validated experimentally to determine the total capacity of each link. The architecture using two distinct wavelengths (one for the downlink and one for the uplink) achieves a capacity of 40Gbps for the downlink and 20Gbps for the uplink by using FDM/FDMA PON. Finally, a hybrid architecture using a single wavelength to transport both uplink and downlink data has been explored and achieves a symmetrical capacity of 25Gbps

Efficient Routing and Resource Sharing Mechanisms for Hybrid Optical-Wireless Access Networks

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The integration of passive optical networks (PONs) and wireless mesh networks (WMNs) into Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) networks has recently emerged as a promising strategy for providing flexible network services at relative high transmission rates. This work investigates the effectiveness of localized routing that prioritizes transmissions over the local gateway to the optical network and avoids wireless packet transmissions in radio zones that do not contain the packet source or destination. Existing routing schemes for FiWi networks consider mainly hop-count and delay metrics over a flat WMN node topology and do not specifically prioritize the local network structure. The combination of clustered and localized routing (CluLoR) performs better in terms of throughput-delay compared to routing schemes that are based on minimum hop-count which do not consider traffic localization. Subsequently, this work also investigates the packet delays when relatively low-rate traffic that has traversed a wireless network is mixed with conventional high-rate PON-only traffic. A range of different FiWi network architectures with different dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) mechanisms is considered. The grouping of the optical network units (ONUs) in the double-phase polling (DPP) DBA mechanism in long-range (order of 100~Km) FiWi networks is closely examined, and a novel grouping by cycle length (GCL) strategy that achieves favorable packet delay performance is introduced. At the end, this work proposes a novel backhaul network architecture based on a Smart Gateway (Sm-GW) between the small cell base stations (e.g., LTE eNBs) and the conventional backhaul gateways, e.g., LTE Servicing/Packet Gateway (S/P-GW). The Sm-GW accommodates flexible number of small cells while reducing the infrastructure requirements at the S-GW of LTE backhaul. In contrast to existing methods, the proposed Sm-GW incorporates the scheduling mechanisms to achieve the network fairness while sharing the resources among all the connected small cells base stations. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 2016

In estuaries, the particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC and PON) are one of the main constituents of the material in suspension (MS). The organic carbon can come from natural sources in many coastal areas, however it has observed eutrofization processes originated of intense antropic input of POC and PON. Research about the organic fraction of the MS in the estuary of the Patos Lagoon is scarce for carbon and nitrogen. In function of its importance the present work study this subject, being part of the thematic group "Quality Ambient and Biodiversity", that belongs in the project "Use and Appropriation of Recursos Costeiros (RECOS)", of the Institute of the Milênio. The present study has as objective to evaluate the distribution of POC and PON in the Saco da Mangueira (impacted) and Saco do Arraial (less impacted), through the development of the method of elementary analysis CHNS, to evaluate the state of organic contamination of the mentioned embayments and to compare it with other aquatic environments. The present study occurred from outubro/03 to junho/04, in both embayments, with semimonthly collections of surface water in 4 places of each one. The samples were filtered, then the filters were dry at 60°C for 24 hours, exposed to a vapor of HCl and again dried at 60°C for 24 hours. The samples were analyzed for carbon and nitrogen in the equipment Perkin Elmer CHN/S model 2400. The results showed variations in the concentrations of POC and PON in the surface water, with higher values found in dezembro/03 (spring) and fevereiro/04 (summer). The Saco do Arraial showed approximate3ly constant characteristics in the levels of POC (344 the 2354 μg L-1) and PON (130 the 836 μg L-1), when compared with the Saco da Mangueira, being high concentrations associated with autoctones contributions of primary producers, distinguishing the phytoplankton. However, the Saco da Mangueira presented likely influence of antropic factors in the levels of POC (193 the 2794 μg L-1) and PON (72 the 2386 μg L-1) being expressive at the end of the spring and summer. In both regions, the average participation of phytoplankton to the POC lesser that 30%, associated to the low values of relation C/N (4-5), confirm the participation of the bacteria with phytoplankton in the levels of POC and PON. The minimum and maximum values of POC were similar between the two study places, but the maximum concentration of PON was approximately three times bigger in the Saco da Mangueira, being the parameter that better characterized its eutrofization. These particulate elements presented minimum and maximum concentrations greater that values of other estuaries, which participated of Program RECOS, and similar to the levels found in other aquatic environments. Exception was found for the maximum value of PON in the Saco da Mangueira that had concentrations higher than other estuaries, due to the nitrogen constituent of the ressuspended MS to have not only an organic origin, but also inorganic. This should be due to the long historic of human effect in the Saco da Mangueira, with high inputs of nutrients and particulate materials proceeding from urban and industrial areas of the city of Rio Grande.

Optimalizace služeb v optických přístupových sítích FTTx / Services Optimization in FTTx Optical Access Networks

Horváth, Tomáš January 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with an optimization of Triple play services and security in optical access networks. The first chapter provides theory basics which are necessary for results evaluation. The second chapter describes optical access networks with their parameters such as transmission speed, split ratio, line code, bit error rate etc. defined by ITU. Next chapter summaries the current state in optical networks construction field according to the European Union developing plan. The practical part of this thesis is divided into several subchapters. The significant part of the thesis is dedicated to the security of passive optical networks and design of proper security model for current networks. For this purpose, the unique parameter time propagation Tprop, with the novel security model was developed. Next part of the thesis provides an analysis of control traffic and data traffic in the gigabit passive optical networks. For a novel algorithm in activation process in gigabit passive optical networks the measurement results were used. The novel algorithm decreases the total time needed for this process. The last but one subchapter deals with an ILP model for Triple Play services. The last subchapter contains the own implementation of the transmission converge layer in VPIphotonics simulation tool.
