The making of an African working class: Port Elizabeth 1925-1963

Bibliography: pages 231-239. / The thesis examines the 'making' of an african working class in Port Elizabeth. It offers an alternative interpretation to conventional histories which emphasize continuity both in the idea of a strong industrial working class and in a tradition of militant and effective worker organisation. At the same time, it posits the idea that there was a working-class movement which developed among Port Elizabeth's african community in the late 1940's and 1950's. Chapter 1 examines population growth in Port Elizabeth, the growth of secondary industry, and employment opportunities for africans. It is argued that limited opportunities for african employment in secondary industry affected the forms of working-class organisation that emerged. Chapter 2 examines the situation of the urban african population in the 1920's and 1930's, looking at factors which influenced its organisation and consciousness. The low wages paid to african workers were not challenged effectively in this period by the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union which had declined by the mid-1920's, or the Trades and Labour Council which did not organise african workers. However, the permanently urbanised status of the majority of the african population laid the basis for a militant community consciousness. Chapter 3 analyses attempts to organise african workers during the Second World War. It focusses on Wage Board determinations. the first african trade unions formed by the Ballingers and Max Gordon, the organisation of the Council of Non-European Trade Unions and the Trades and Labour Council, and the organisation of railway workers. It is argued that these attempts at organising african labour were largely unsuccessful in building strong industrial unions with an african leadership. Chapter 4 looks at the rise of the 'new unions' in the post-war period, when african workers were drawn into manufacturing on a large scale, and an african working-class leadership began to emerge. The response to this from the state, capital and other trade unions is examined through looking at the struggles of workers in four sectors: stevedoring, laundry, textiles and food. These sectors are contrasted with the tertiary sector where organisation of african workers was weak. Chapter 5 examines the politics of reproduction of the african working class between 1 945 and 1960. It looks at changes in the nature of the African National Congress and the Communist Party of South Africa, and at innovative strategies around issues of reproduction. The role of women's organisation and their struggle against the extension of pass laws is highlighted, and it is posited that a working class movement developed in this period. Chapter 6 analyses the application of influx control in Port Elizabeth in the 1950's, and the conflict of interests over the implementation of the labour bureau system. It examines the divisions in the african working class between migrants and non-migrants, and the response of different sections of the working class. Chapter 7 looks at the role of the South African Congress of Trade Unions. It is argued that the integration of point-of-production struggles with community and political struggles was the outcome of the position of african workers in industry combined with strong political organisation in the 'sphere of reproduction'. Changes in the structural position of african workers combined with political repression led to the collapse of this working class movement in the early 1960's.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of implementing community based care for moderately mentally retarded persons in a specific centre in the Port Elizabeth area. The objectives of the study were to identify • the needs of the moderately mentally retarded children. • the physical, psychosocial and vocational rehabilitation means of meeting these needs. • how involved the communities, parents and government were in the care of moderately mentally retarded children. A quantitative, exploratmy and descriptive design was used. A sample of 50 moderately mentally retarded children was utilised. Data were collected by means of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The major research findings indicate that community care for MMRPs could only be feasible with sufficient resources, expertise and community involvement. All these aspects appeared to be lacking in the centre where this research was conducted raising questions as to benefits which the mentally retarded children and their parents and the community could derive from these services. Exploring the developmental profile of Black HIV positive/AIDS infants and children a longitudinal study

This study aimed at exploring the developmental profile of HIV positive/AIDS infants and children (three to 35 months) over a period of 11 months in the Nelson Mandela Metropole, utilising the Revised Extended Griffiths Scales of Mental Development (GSMD). The purpose was to generate information about the development of HIV positive/AIDS infants and children, highlighting developmental strengths and weaknesses to ultimately aid the custodians of these children with their interventions. A non-probability purposive sampling method was applied, and a longitudinal profile was generated as participants were assessed twice. Participants were all outpatients at Kwazakhele Day Clinic, Dora Nginza and Livingstone Hospitals in the Nelson Mandela Metropole, and were located for the study through their caregiver’s attendance of an HIV support groups at the Dora Nginza Hospital. Data was analysed statistically using descriptive statistics and Hotelings-T² tests. Results indicated a significant difference between first and second assessment on the General Quotient and on two of the six subscales, namely Eye-Hand Co-ordination (D) and Practical Reasoning (F). It was deduced that development declined or did not improve as participants aged.

Study of milk marketing by selected dairy companies in Port Elizabeth

This paper concerns itself with decreasing milk consumption in the Port Elizabeth area and how the marketing mix influences marketing decisions. Personal interviews were conducted in different supermarkets to investigate consumer perceptions of milk, the brand purchased and how consumers use milk. The study indicated that people purchasing milk were very price conscious. Respondents showed almost no brand loyalty. However, respondents indicated that they were aware of the health benefits of drinking milk, although most used milk predominantly to whiten their tea and/or coffee. A comparison of the findings of this study to those of Geils (1981) and Hanekom (1990) indicates that the milk industry has the same problems in 1999 as it did in 1990 and in 1981. Findings reflect the unhealthy perception people have about milk. Many regard it as a child’s drink and others perceive it as fattening. Decreasing consumption figures indicate that there has been little effort or success from the dairy industry to change consumer perceptions of milk. Figures indicate that consumption of milk may be close to zero in 2015, if marketers of dairy companies do not improve the image of milk. However, a considerable amount of investment by overseas companies in Port Elizabeth dairies may increase marketing activities in the future. This paper begins with an overview of the major competitors in the Port Elizabeth area, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. The importance of selecting the appropriate market mix for milk is discussed by explaining each mix element, namely, product, distribution, promotion and price. Distribution involves the delivery of the perishable product to outlets in the shortest space of time after production. Careful and efficient planning of refrigerated warehousing, transport and delivery services all indirectly contribute to the freshness and quality of milk. Promotion is one of the most important elements that can be used to change consumer perceptions of milk. It is necessary to select the correct message for the specific target group when advertising. Product benefits like milk’s purity, or naturalness, should be focused on rather than its creaminess and richness. Price constitutes the fourth element of the marketing mix. Price in the narrowest sense, is the amount of money charged for milk. The milk industry is intensely price sensitive which often results in price wars among competitors. Most consumers purchase the cheapest brand of milk indicating little brand loyalty, especially among top-end consumers.

Determining and improving the level of service quality at International Healthcare Distributors

The levels of service quality at International Healthcare Distributors (IHD) have been determined. Service quality in organisations require a strong emphasis on customer service and service delivery processes. The main area of this study focuses on the need for appropriate levels and criteria of service quality that will satisfy customers of pharmaceutical distributors. Various determinants affecting service quality levels have been discussed. The nature of service quality has been outlined and customer expectation standards have been determined. Customer satisfaction versus service quality has been discussed and the consumers’ perceptions towards service quality have been identified. Obstacles to attaining service quality have been described and potential causes of service quality shortfalls have been defined. Various surveys were studied to determine the implementation of service quality dimensions in a variety of disciplines. A sample was taken from the IHD customer base and a questionnaire was designed and distributed to the customers. The questionnaire examined five dimensions, tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. There was a hundred percent response rate. The results indicated that the tangibility dimension was highest in terms of customer agreement and reliability the lowest. The results of the questionnaire have proven that two of the hypotheses are negative and one positive. Concluding remarks and recommendations were highlighted and it is evident that IHD needs to improve its level of service quality in order to meet their customer requirements.

Establish to what extent small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Port Elizabeth CBD comply with good governance principles and practices

Throughout the world, corporate or good governance has become such a dominating terminology in the ever -increasing business vocabulary. Its fast rise and strategic relevance to the global business communi ty is part ly due to the desi re by the business leaders wor ldwide to be seen to be doing something about the scourge of corporate failures resulting f rom poor governance. The objective of the research was to establish to what extent Smal l and Medium Enterpr ises (SMEs) comply with good governance principles and practices. The SMEs in the Port Elizabeth CBD were chosen as the representative population of the SME sector throughout the country. The research methodology included: A li terature study to determine, on the one hand the current good governance pract ices global ly, and on the other the role, relevance and the challenges of the SMEs in the South Af rican Economy. An empir ical study in order to obtain the empir ical evidence concerning SME compliance to good governance principles and pract ice. This was done through a survey of SME sector in the Port Elizabeth CBD. Lastly, the conclusion and recommendations. The conclusion was reached, inter alia, that the major ity of SMEs do not comply wi th good governance principles and pract ices for various reasons. Therefore the following recommendations were made: Recommended that the organisational accountants appointed in terms of the law should not confine themselves to the financial aspects of the business only, but also look at governance of these small businesses. Recommended that a sub-code for SMEs be developed. Recommended that the existing code of governance be amended to include a clause that requires large and establish businesses to insist on good governance in the SMEs they deal with at any level. Recommended that the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) should develop a qualification or unit standard on good governance to facilitate training on good governance. Since good governance knowledge is a key competence for every manager, especially senior management. It is recommended that institutions of higher learning should have good governance in their curriculum.

Selecting an appropriate process for the formulating of an operations strategy for Bridgestone/Firestone, Port Elizabeth plant, in a changed market environment

The research problem addressed in this study was aimed in assisting the management of Bridgestone/Firestone, Port Elizabeth plant, in selecting an appropriate process for the formulation of an operations strategy. The author embarked on a literature survey to gain understanding of the challenges that are occurring in the market environment. The theories and techniques around operational strategies were extensively researched in an effort to effectively and efficiently assist the management of Firestone in achieving a competitive advantage over rival competitors. Other areas of focus include the content, development, principles and concepts in developing an operations strategy. The author details the process of the formulation of an operations strategy as well as the discussion of four models/procedures deployed in organisations that would enhance strategy formulation. It is evident from the findings of the empirical study that a high percentage of the respondents “agree” that the strategy deployed within Bridgestone/Firestone, Port Elizabeth plant is appropriate, yet an alarmingly high percentage believe it to be “ineffective.
