The Liverpool China trade, 1834-1880

The nucleus of this thesis is the Liverpool China Trade Collection. This exists in Liverpool in store and has never been exhibited as a whole. Much of this collection is provenanced to local families with strong shipping connections. The examination of this collection is preceded by an analysis of the data on shipping and trade with the aim of showing the importance of the port of Liverpool in the latter part of the nineteenth century after the release of the East India Company franchise and the opening of the Suez Canal. The latter event had a dramatic effect on Liverpool because it coincided with new developments in the compound steam engine, the potential of which was exploited to the full by Alfred Holt, a Liverpool shipowner. The study falls into two main parts. First, the historical background is sketched, revealing, amongst other factors, the influence of American traders, who in the nineteenth century anticipated developments in shipping, for example in clipper-ship design, as well as providing a model market for trade goods from China the demands of which were reflected by the tastes and demands of the prosperous Liverpool merchants. The shipping data are amplified by reference to the family correspondence of Robert Thomson, who was first a clipper captain and later captain of one of the Holt steamers, and also by the diary of Alexander Kidd, whose service with Alfred Holt's company lasted over most of the period under survey only being terminated by his untimely death at sea. Second, the thesis examines in detail the collection itself, which is unique in this country because it is unusually well provenanced to Liverpool families, enabling us to trace the sort of private trading which was going on at the behest of individuals as well as on behalf of the companies who were importing tea as their main commodity. This part of the thesis contains a report on the oriental collections of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside, discussing the collections in relation to a neglected phase of China Trade art and in the light of locally sourced documentation. An account, and possible explanation, is offered of the ways in which the nature of the China Trade changed in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The thesis examines the collection itself, illustrates the nature of the objects which were being collected, often by or on behalf of the great mercantile families of Liverpool, and casts light not only upon the nationwide taste for Chinese products together with shifts in patronage and consumerism which developed at this time but also upon the effect trade contacts, the establishment of new colonial communities on the Chinese mainland and the emergence of an identifiable treaty port culture had upon developments in Chinese export art.

Assessment of fundamental strategic issues in structural change in United Kingdom and South African ports by systemic scenarios

The future complexity of strategic issues in international structural change was demonstrated by UK and SA ports. This arose from the likely extent of structural constraints and the effects of stakeholder power. From a review of emerging Advanced Systems Theory a new Boundary -spanning perspective of strategy was developed, that led to the specification of conceptual circumstances of potential outcomes of change. Since existing systems methodologies could not accommodate future power relationships, a new methodology and data collection technique was developed. The circumstances were developed into multiple scenarios which were judged by international decision-makers. These judgements were subjected to quantitative and qualitative analysis from a Strategic Choice Perspective. The outcome was a Boundary -spanning 'Long-term Strategic Service Industry' model which proposed the outlines of the future strategy and organisational structure that ought to be adopted to meet 'public interest' constraints. A dual subject and methodological contribution was made.

A discrete event simulation-based approach for managing cyber vulnerabilities in a full-service deep waterway port

Deepwater sea ports are considered to be gateways for global trade and susceptible to a diverse range of risks, including natural disasters such as hurricane, storm, drought, as well as a course of events ranging from human error to malicious cyber-attack. To deal with cyber vulnerabilities, this study examines how cyber-attack to a given technology (e.g., Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Radio Frequency Identification Tags (RFID), Navigation Technologies, and others) impacts the overall port operations. We use Port of Pascagoula as testbed to visualize and validate the modeling results utilizing FlexSim software. Several sets of experiments are conducted to provide important managerial insights for decision makers. Results indicate that cyber-attack on technologies used by the port may significantly impact the port operations. In overall, cyber-attack has meaningful impacts on ports systems that may result in significant economic and operational loss as well as long-term security and sustainability for overall ports performances.

<p>Waveguides are used to transmit electromagnetic signals.Their geometry is typically long and slender their particularshape can be used in the design of computational methods. Onlyspecial modes are transmitted and eigenvalue and eigenvectoranalysis becomes important.</p><p>We develop a .nite-element code for solving theelectromagnetic .eld problem in closed waveguides .lled withvarious materials. By discretizing the cross-section of thewaveguide into a number of triangles, an eigenvalue problem isderived. A general program based on Arnoldi’s method andARPACK has been written using node and edge elements toapproximate the .eld. A serious problem in the FEM was theoccurrence of spurious solution, that was due to impropermodeling of the null space of the curl operator. Therefore edgeelements has been chosen to remove non physical spurioussolutions that arises.</p><p>Numerical examples are given for homogeneous andinhomogeneous waveguides, in the homogeneous case the resultsare compared to analytical solutions and the right order ofconvergence is achieved. For the more complicated inhomogeneouswaveguides with and without striplines, comparison has beendone with results found in literature together with gridconvergence studies.</p><p>The code has been implemented to be used in an industrialenvironment, together with full 3-D time and frequency domainsolvers. The2-D simulations has been used as input for full3-D time domain simulations, and the results have been comparedto what an analytical input would give.</p>
