Modification of wood by liquid-precursor thermal spray coating

Sedhain, Ganesh 07 August 2020 (has links)
This research investigates the efficacy of liquid-precursor thermal spray coating (TSC) as a facile wood modification technique to bring hydrophobicity and UV durability to a wooden surface. The technique was successful in depositing Cu and TiO2 particles onto southern yellow pine (SYP) veneers by using copper azole, copper quaternary, and titanium tetraisopropoxide as the precursor solutions. Using optimized settings, the average coating surface coverage of > 90% and an average coating thickness of > 5 μm were obtained. The coatings displayed up to 4H rating in the film hardness scale and up to 3B rating in adhesion strength scale, suggesting reasonable mechanical durability under mild mechanical abrasion. TSC-modified wood with TiO2 created a water repellent layer, yielding a significant increase in hydrophobicity that changed the water contact angle from 57° to 126°. Accelerated weathering test results showed that the TSC-modified wood was more resistant to discoloration compared to unmodified wood.

Sweet and savage: the world through the shockumentary film lens

Goodall, Mark D. January 2005 (has links)
No / The first ever English-language title devoted exclusively to the shocking, controversial and influential mondo documentary film cycle. "The Mondo Cane films were an important key to what was going on in the media landscape of the 1960s especially post the JFK assassination." J.G BALLARD Mondo Cane in 1962 was the blueprint for a shocking, controversial and influential documentary film cycle. Known collectively as 'mondo films' - or 'shockumentaries'" -this enduring series of films is a precursor of the Reality-TV show. A box-office draw for three decades and now a staple of the video rental market, these explosive 'exposés' would often pass fabricated scenes as fact in order to gave the public a sensationalist, highly emotive view of the world. SWEET & SAVAGE is the first ever English-language book devoted exclusively to the Mondo documentary film. A study of Mondo as a global film phenomenon, it includes a detailed examination of the key films and includes exclusive interviews with the 'godfathers' of this cult genre. Includes an exclusive interview with author J.G. Ballard.

Adult human epidermal melanocytes for neurodegeneration research

Papageorgiou, Nikolaos, Carpenter, Elizabeth, Scally, Andy J., Tobin, Desmond J. January 2008 (has links)
Neuronal models for Alzheimer's disease research frequently have limitations as a result of their nonhuman origin and/or transformed state. Here we examined the potential of readily accessible neural crest-derived human epidermal melanocytes isolated from elderly individuals as a model system for Alzheimer's disease research. The amyloidogenic isoforms of amyloid precursor protein (APP; isoforms APP751/770) and amyloid beta (A¿)1¿40 were detected in epidermal melanocytes using immunocytochemistry and western blotting. Incubation of epidermal melanocytes with aggregated A¿1¿40 peptide caused a concentration-dependent reduction in cell viability, whereas age-matched dermal fibroblasts remained unaffected. These findings suggest that epidermal melanocytes from elderly donors are capable of amyloidogenesis and are sensitive to A¿1¿40 cytotoxicity. Thus, these cells may provide a readily accessible human cell model for Alzheimer's disease research.

Synthesis, Characterization, Processing and Physical Behavior of Melt-Processible Acrylonitrile Co- and Terpolymers for Carbon Fibers: Effect of Synthetic Variables on Copolymer Synthesis

Johnson, Harry Dale 26 May 2006 (has links)
A novel photocrosslinkable and melt processible terpolymer precursor for carbon fibers has been successfully synthesized and characterized. The terpolymer was synthesized by an efficient emulsion polymerization route and has a typical composition of acrylonitrile/ methyl acrylate/acryloyl benzophenone in the molar ratio of 85/14/1. This thesis describes a systematic variation of the polymerization variables in the emulsion polymerization which may further enhance the system. In particular, the effects of chain transfer agent, initiator, and surfactant concentration on the polymer properties were studied. / Master of Science

Immunoablation of cells expressing the NG2 chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan

Leoni, G., Rattray, Marcus, Fulton, D., Rivera, A., Butt, A.M. 02 1900 (has links)
Yes / Expression of the transmembrane NG2 chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan (CSPG) defines a distinct population of NG2-glia. NG2-glia serve as a regenerative pool of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells in the adult central nervous system (CNS), which is important for demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and are a major component of the glial scar that inhibits axon regeneration after CNS injury. In addition, NG2-glia form unique neuron–glial synapses with unresolved functions. However, to date it has proven difficult to study the importance of NG2-glia in any of these functions using conventional transgenic NG2 ‘knockout’ mice. To overcome this, we aimed to determine whether NG2-glia can be targeted using an immunotoxin approach. We demonstrate that incubation in primary anti-NG2 antibody in combination with secondary saporin-conjugated antibody selectively kills NG2-expressing cells in vitro. In addition, we provide evidence that the same protocol induces the loss of NG2-glia without affecting astrocyte or neuronal numbers in cerebellar brain slices from postnatal mice. This study shows that targeting the NG2 CSPG with immunotoxins is an effective and selective means for killing NG2-glia, which has important implications for studying the functions of these enigmatic cells both in the normal CNS, and in demyelination and degeneration.
