How do fluids move through rocks? : High fluxes of CO2 in the Earth's crust

Kleine, Barbara January 2012 (has links)
Metamorphic hydrous, CO2-bearing fluids play a critical role in the global carbon cycle. However, how big this influence is on the global carbon cycle and therefore on global climatic processes, is unknown. The actual amount of CO2 which is released into the atmosphere due to metamorphic processes is still debated. For this purpose, fluid-driven reactions in metamorphic rocks must be studied by tracking fluid-rock interactions along pathways of ancient fluids. In the study presented in this thesis, we study fluid-rock interaction in the southeastern part of the Greek island Syros in the Cycladic Archipelago (Aegean). On Syros fluid-rock interaction is recorded by the preservation of blueschist facies assemblages at greenschist facies conditions along a normal shear zone. Blueschist preservation is caused by a combination of metasomatic addition of SiO2 and Na2O and elevated XCO2 which is maintained by high fluxes of a CO2-bearing, hydrous fluid along the shear zone. This research aims to provide a better understanding of the role of mountain building in the carbon cycle. Flux estimates for climate-forcing fluid components (e.g. carbon) require that their concentration in the fluid, fluid volumes and velocities are known. This will be the focus of future work. Further, whole rock chemistry and the availability of specific minerals will be studied to achieve knowledge about which kind of parameters influence and enhance the propagation of fluids through rocks.

District Level Preventive Maintenance Treatment Selection Tool for Use in Virginia

Hosten, Akyiaa Makeda 06 February 2013 (has links)
Preventive maintenance has the potential to improve network condition by retarding future pavement deterioration. The Virginia Department of Transportation uses its pavement management system to determine maintenance targets for each district. The districts then use these recommendations to select pavements that will receive maintenance and the types of treatments that will be applied. Each district has a different approach to preventive maintenance. There was a need for more consistent preventive maintenance practices across the state. This thesis outlines guidelines for the implementation of a preventive maintenance policy. Preventive maintenance treatments currently being used within Virginia include chip seal, slurry seal, microsurfacing, and thin hot mix asphalt overlays. Historical pavement condition data was obtained from the VDOT PMS for these treatments and treatment performance models were developed. A district level treatment selection tool was developed to assist the district level decision making process. A prioritized list of pavement sections was generated, maximizing the cost-effectiveness of the selected treatments subject to budgetary constraints set by the central office. The treatment selection tool was then run for each pavement classification in each district. The results of this analysis were presented. Although the recommended budget for each district was very close to the targets set by the central office, the recommended lane miles for each district were about half the targets set by the central office.  It is believed that the unit costs used in this analysis were higher than those used in the VDOT PMS analysis. This selection tool has the potential to be a very powerful decision support tool if the unit costs are representative of what the expected treatment costs are for each district. / Master of Science

Är det för sent nu? : En litteraturöversikt om fertila kvinnors erfarenheter av att få information om fertilitetspåverkan av cancerbehandling / Is it too late now? : A literature review about fertile women’s experiences of receiving information about the effect on fertility of cancer treatment

Edfors, Anna January 2016 (has links)
Background: Fertile women that are about to undergo cancer treatment do not receive adequate information about fertility and fertility preservation. Not to have been able to make an active choice about undergoing fertility preservation may cause a suffering for these women. Purpose: To describe which experiences young women with cancer have of the information given about fertility and fertility preservation measures prior to the cancer treatment with regards to disease-suffering, care-suffering and life-suffering. Method: Literature review of qualitative and quantitative research. Results: Eight subcategories based on the three main categories disease-suffering, care-suffering and life-suffering were identified. Disease-suffering: (1) Anxiety and (2) Uncertainty. Care-suffering: (3) Attitudes and (4) Lack of information. Life-suffering: (5) Relations and Other social factors, (6) Psychological illness, (7) Longing for children and (8) Quality of life. Conclusion: Various measures are needed to ensure women’s right to information about fertility prior to cancer treatment in order to diminish disease-suffering, care-suffering and life-suffering. Caregivers need to talk with women about fertility related problems, both preventively and for healing purposes. Clinical significance: A clear and safer information policy is needed on fertility and fertility preservation for patients about to undergo cancer treatment.

Preserving a Legacy: The Dox Thrash House Project

Malandra-Myers, Sam A. January 2022 (has links)
This thesis seeks to highlight the legacy of artist Dox Thrash as singular and crucial to Philadelphia’s historical narrative. This legacy includes not only his artwork, but the impact he made on the community around him, as well as the physical structure of his home on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. By examining the great oeuvre of Thrash’s artwork, this thesis argues that it is in need of recognition beyond what it has already received: not only because of the merit of the work, but because of the rarity of his perspective. Thrash depicted African American life in America with dignity and intimacy as a Black man at a time when the only mainstream representations currently circulating were in the form of caricatures and other insensitive portrayals by white artists. His work acts as a keystone to contextualize the Black experience in Philadelphia during the Jazz Era, even though the connection to that time has been seemingly under attack in this city.Sharswood, the neighborhood where Dox Thrash lived, was once a center of Black life, but has been dismantled and degraded by the effects of redlining. The state of his derelict home is emblematic of this, as it currently is marked with a historical placard from the city but did not have any preservation done to the structure. That is until the Dox Thrash House Project, a group of passionate volunteers, began to fundraise and raise awareness to save Thrash’s home. The work being done by the Dox Thrash House Project inspired this thesis as they have fought to bring Thrash’s home back to life through preservation. This thesis tackles the contextualization of the treatment of Thrash’s legacy within the current landscape of both art history and preservation in Philadelphia. / Art History / This thesis contains supplemental material that was not uploaded due to copyright restrictions.
