Pressure Dependence of Hydrogenolysis of Propane over Supported RutheniumTsjeng, Po 03 1900 (has links)

The hydrogenolysis of propane over 0.5 weight percent ruthenium
supported on (see symbol in text)-alumina in a continuous stirred-tank catalytic reactor was studied at various pressures and temperatures.

The reaction orders with respect to propane and hydrogen and the
activation energies were examined at various pressures. A mechanism
was proposed and a Hougen-Watson type of rate expression was obtained
from the analysis of the proposed mechanism.

The product distributions were studied at various pressures and temperatures. A reaction network involving reversible adsorption-desorption of the hydrocarbons and irreversible rupture of the carbon-carbon bonds in the surface species was applied to the experimental data.

The proposed mechanism was consistent with the data for kinetics and selectivity.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

Pressure Dependence of Line Widths of Microwave Spectra of Sulphur DioxideYang, Wei Han 12 1900 (has links)
Measurements of line width parameters for eleven rotational transitions of type (J -- J + 1) of SO2 were made and are reported herein. The line width quantum number (J) trend was obtained. The microwave spectrograph used for these measurements of line width is described. Operational methods to operate the spectrograph are presented and discussed, with particular attention given to how to measure the line width. Suggestions for future avenues of probing this molecule to ascertain the non-uniform behavior of the line width parameter over the quantum number and frequency range are given.

Investigation of the Pressure Dependence of SO3 FormationNaidoo, Jacinth 12 1900 (has links)
The kinetics of the pressure dependent O + SO2 + Ar reaction have been investigated using laser photolysis resonance fluorescence at temperatures of 289 K, 399 K, 581 K, 699 K, 842 K and 1040 K and at pressures from 30-665 torr. Falloff was observed for the first time in the pressure dependence. Application of Lindemann theory yielded an Arrhenius expression of k(T) = 3.3 x 10-32exp(-992/T) cm6 molecule-1 s-1 for the low pressure limit and k(T) = 8.47 x 10-14exp(-468/T) cm3 molecule-1 s-1 for the high pressure limit at temperatures between 289 and 842 K. The reaction is unusual as it possesses a positive activation energy at low temperature, yet at higher temperatures the activation energy is negative, illustrating a reaction barrier.
