Prospects for Privatization of the Turkish Telecommunications System

Eroglu, Ismail 12 1900 (has links)
Turkey is considering privatizing its telecommunications system. Any developing country must analyze whether its economic, social, and institutional environment is appropriate for the privatization of a utility. The purposes of this study are (1) to establish a model to assist policy makers, (2) to analyze whether Turkey meets the prerequisites for telecommunications privatization, and (3) to provide Turkish leaders pragmatic policy alternatives pertaining to privatization of the Turkish Telecommunications system.High inflation rate, weakness of the private sector and the lack of regulatory regime are the major impediments facing Turkey's privatization efforts. Turkey might consider several options including (1) not privatizing at all, (2) retaining public ownership of the network operations while privatizing only the physical equipment market, or (3) following the British privatization model.

Attitudes toward the Effects of Privatization on the Employment System: A Study of Undergraduate College Students in Saudi Arabia

Al-Modaf, Obaid Ali 29 April 2003 (has links)
This study aims to examine the attitudes of the Saudi undergraduate college students toward the anticipated effects of privatization on the employment system of the Saudi privatized SOEs. Using survey questionnaire data collected in May 2002 from 672 Saudi undergraduate college students, the study results reveal varied attitudes. On the one hand, large percentages of the respondents prefer working under close supervision of Saudi management, having a salary based on productivity, being promoted based upon performance (rather than seniority), and adhering to prescribed procedures in executing job tasks. On the other hand, high percentages of the study respondents tend to dislike the concepts of putting forth more effort to meet management's plans, of working on nights and weekend, and of compromising job security in return for a higher salary. In addition, while the majority of the study respondents believe that privatization of state-owned enterprises is best for the local economy, their support for privatization is qualified by their insistence or desire that it not negatively impact their own interests. The statistical significance and association analyses reveal that the effects of academic majors and province on respondents' attitudes toward promotion criteria, teaming, and management's nationality are indeed significant. In addition, gender, SES, living areas prior to college entry, and adherence to religion are significantly related to respondents' attitudes toward privatization in general and toward some of its potential effects on the employment system. Recommendations are provided. / Ph. D.

Nowadays, China has the tendency that more and more military-owned hotels are shifting toprivate hotels gradually over time. Military-owned hotels have various disadvantages. However, they also have many reasons to exist as well. This thesis aims to answer theresearch question on how the military-owned hotels can deal with the privatization tendencythrough the application of TQM systematically. Case study and literature review are used tofind out the answers to the research question. Two case hotels, one military-owned hotel andone private hotel, are considered in this thesis. In order to guarantee the privacy of the twohotels and their staff, the military-owned hotel would be called Hotel A, and the private hotelwould be called Hotel B. By reviewing various TQM theories, five important aspects in theparticular quality management system have been identified for the case hotels. Finally, ageneralized quality management system model is developed for Chinese Military-ownedhotels in order to make them survive in the competition with private hotels.
