Frankenstein; Or The Modern Prometheus and The Inoculated Reader

Drover, Jane 06 1900 (has links)
My thesis examines the relationship between Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus and the Frankenstein myth as it has come to be known because of film. I propose that present-day readers, in addition to having a repository of literary knowledge, also have a reservoir of filmic memories on which to draw when they read. These visual 'texts' can function, I argue, not only as inter-texts but also as signs, indicating to us how to read certain written texts. Building on reader-response criticism, I include these visual signs in my analysis of the reading experience of Frankenstein. After outlining a brief history of visualizations of the novel on stage and in film and commenting on the contributions these adaptations gave to the story, I focus on the James Whale classics of 1931 and 1935. It is to. these films that we owe the figures of the Karloffian monster, the hunchbacked assistant, the 'mad' scientist, and the monster's grotesque 'bride.' Having imitated the common order of our exposure to the myth --that is we know or know of Frankenstein films before we arrive at the novel I define and explain the theoretical concepts of narrative and filmic afterimages. then discuss their circulation in and revitalization through such agencies as advertisements, cartoons, and film and television remakes, illustrating how the Frankenstein story continues to be invoked and reworked in our culture. I then turn to the novel and focus, first, on its reception and treatment by literary critics. Next, I examine its questioning and, at times, subverting, of such institutions as science, marriage, and orthodox Christianity. I also examine the novel's questioning of such concepts as narrative closure, the unity of character, and the possiblity of knowing 'reality.' At the same time, I illustrate (1) how literary critics, in dismissing the novel as flawed, actually shield us from the novel's subversiveness and (2) how film versions of Frankenstein and their circulating afterimages not only work to diminish the dis-ease which the novel elicits but, in fact, inoculate us against this dis-ease. I conclude my study by relying on yet another metaphor --Freud's concept of "screen memory." We have, as my thesis illustrates, been effectively screened from Mary Shelley's novel. The version of the myth as it has come to be known by today's reader is not only tame (and tamed) by comparison but is, in some instances, antithetical to the novel. What I propose is both an acceptance of filmic afterimages of novels which have been visualized and a critical reading of these images. In the case of Frankenstein, once we become aware of how certain filmic afterimages are operating, we can work towards a "cleansing of the doors of perception," so that in removing the film from before our eyes, we may see yet another, darker side of the myth. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Scriabin's "Prometheus" (1910): Problems and Solutions in a Transcription for Solo Piano

Powell, Ted 07 1900 (has links)
Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) composed primarily for his instrument, the piano. He did, however, compose five major works for orchestra and a piano concerto. Scriabin's last work for orchestra, Prometheus: Poem of Fire, Op. 60 (1910), exemplifies his mature compositional style. The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute a solo transcription of Prometheus to the piano's rich literature in that genre. Furthermore, the dissertation aims to identify and examine the problems encountered in transcribing this work for solo piano and the decision-making that led to musically acceptable solutions. Throughout the process of arrangement, one major question became apparent: What informs the transcription? In turn, this question and its numerous answers served as a guide during the transcription's realization and are the focus of the project.

Um processo para customização de sistemas de software utilizando componentes orientados a aspectos / A process to customize software systems using aspect oriented componentes

Bianchi, Thiago 10 June 2013 (has links)
The software maintenance is recognized as a very important activity, if not indispensable, of Software Engineering. The changes made on the software during its maintenance, if not performed in a systematic way, eventually disfigure and damage the maintainability of this software. In this context, the customization of software systems, in other words, the adaptive maintenance of software systems for domains and for specific environments, has been widely adopted by industry. In another perspective, Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) has been proposed as an approach to improve separation of concerns in software systems. In parallel, there is Software Components that emphasize design and construction of software systems in order to increase reuse and productivity. Also in this subject, some proposals have been made with the objective to combine the concepts of software components with the aspect oriented paradigm, in other words, the creation of components that use aspects as interface to crosscut other systems. It is important to highlight that in the industry, software maintenance, including customization, has not been performed on a systematic way which contributes to the software quality degradation. Therefore, the main contribution of this work is to propose a process for customization of software systems using aspect oriented components aiming the reduction of coupling on software systems adaptation and thus improving its maintainability. Furthermore, a case study was conducted wherein the proposed approach was used to customize a large scale software system. The results of this case study were analyzed qualitatively and have contributed to evaluate the applicability of the proposed approach in this work as a systematic process to customize software systems using aspect-oriented components

Promethei terra

Heppelmann, Alex James 01 November 2013 (has links)
Promethei Terra is a large, heavily cratered, geographical region in the southern part of Mars. It was named for its noticeable albedo features, which are large areas on a planet marked by a contrast in brightness. While the Greek figure Prometheus is best remembered for the theft of fire, his name has become synonymous with human striving, often at the risk of unintended consequence. Promethei Terra, for chamber orchestra, attempts to musically capture the 'brightness' of the Martian region, as well the endless struggle for knowledge. Reull Vallis is a river-like structure located in the Promethei Terra highlands. Recently, many scientists have come to believe that at some point in the Martian past, water flowed through the Reull Vallis valley. Lineated floor deposits, located in the cliffs of the valley are believed to contain glaciers of water ice. These frozen deposits are all that remain of a possible water-rich Martian past. My work for chamber orchestra navigates through several of the geographical landmarks in the Promethei Terra highlands, including the ancient Reull Vallis river. / text
