The relationship between the grotesque and revolutionary thought in Milton's Paradise lost and Shelley's Prometheus unbound /

White, Michael, 1971- January 1997 (has links)
No substantial studies, at least to my knowledge, have yet been dedicated either to Milton's or to Shelley's extensive poetic use of the grotesque. This omission surprises me, especially given the voluminous critical attention both authors receive. Neither Milton nor Shelley's grotesquerie can be viewed as the basis of artistic method or artistic achievement as we might with, say, Rabelais, or Poe, or even Kafka. And neither Milton nor Shelley is self-consciously an artist of "the grotesque." In fact, Milton, from his seventeenth century perspective, would scarcely have regarded the term as being applicable to literary criticism at all. And as a late Romantic, Shelley defined himself rather as a poet of the imagination. Nonetheless I will show that both artists avail themselves of a grotesque aesthetic to achieve some of their most powerful and provocative poetry: we may here consider, for instance, Milton's memorable descriptions of the incongruities of Hell and the deformities of its fallen denizens in Paradise Lost, or Shelley's Gothic touches and his perplexing distortion of conventional linguistic and dramatic form in Prometheus Unbound. / Aside from general considerations of the grotesque in these texts, I will especially focus on how Milton's and Shelley's uses of the grotesque mode provide us with unique, and often fascinating vantage points from which to appreciate their respective political concerns and revolutionary interests. While I expect this critical approach will elucidate Milton and Shelley in their own separate artistic and political spheres, I am especially interested to compare and contrast the poets, to show how the quite different uses made of the grotesque in Prometheus Unbound and Paradise Lost reflect the various ways in which Shelley responds to Milton in his role as a revolutionary forefather.

Topology Optimization of Turbine Manifold in the Rocket Engine Demonstrator Prometheus

Jensen, Filip January 2018 (has links)
The advantages of Topology Optimization (TO) are realized to a large extent due to the manufacturing freedom that Additive Manufacturing (AM) offer, compared to more conventional manufacturing methods. AM has the advantage of manufacturing shallow and complex structures previously not possible, and consequently opens up a whole new design spectrum. This thesis investigates the possibilities of using Topology Optimization as a tool to find stronger and lighter designs for the inlet turbine manifold in the rocket engine demonstrator Prometheus. The manifold is optimized by giving it more mass, subjecting it to load cases and pushing the topology optimization to make the manifold meet the weight requirement without exceeding the yield strength. Result validation indicates that the pressure and thermal loadings are the most prominent. The current topology optimization tools in ANSYS do not support optimization due to thermal features and thus optimization in the presented work has only been able to consider static structural loads. Nevertheless, it is possible to optimize the manifold due to static structural loads and achieve a manifold which satisfies the weight requirement. However, optimization tools due to thermal loading would be a desirable feature in the future.

Performance Evaluation of WebRTC Server On Different Container Technologies : Kubernetes and Docker Swarm

Kukkapalli, Naga Vyshnavi January 2021 (has links)
Background:  Cloud computing technology has come a long way with various technological advancements in the past few years. It has been accelerated with the evolution of various virtualization technologies. Currently almost every social platform and small-scale applications look towards cloud to deploy their services successfully and provide maximum satisfaction to their end-user. Thus, virtualizing their services becomes utmost important to deploy and develop their applications. This alone emphasizes the importance of Docker containers in the development world. Docker containers right now are playing a very important role in the field of cloud computing. Since Multimedia plays a huge role in our day to day lives and most people crave for faster and efficient responses, it is essential to develop our applications with better Real time communication capabilities. Thus, we are determining which container orchestration tool serves best for Real time communication applications.  A multimedia application is developed and deployed using WebRTC based Kurento media server and the performance of the server is measured when the application is deployed. We have chosen Kubernetes and Docker Swarm as container platforms for this thesis. The Servers and Clients are virtualized and metrics such as CPU Utilization, Network Traffic, Container overhead, Memory Utilization are measured. These metrics provide the performance overhead in different scenarios for each orchestration technology. This will be helpful to analyze and understand the effect of Kurento server on these technologies. Thus, the results are expected to determine which orchestration technology serves best for RTC applications. Objectives: The objectives of this project are:  • To implement WebRTC based Kurento server in a container orchestrated environment.  • To extract performance metrics such as Network Traffic, CPU and Memory Utilization while server is running.  • To compare WebRTC based Kurento server in Kubernetes and Docker Swarm.   Method: Kubernetes and Docker Swarm environments are setup and then docker images with video conferencing application(One-to-One call and One-to-Many call) using Kurento media server is deployed in them. Once either of the applications is running, experiments are performed for analyzing performance metrics like CPU Utilization, Memory Utilization, Network Traffic and overhead using monitoring tool, Prometheus. Along with Kubernetes and Docker Swarm, Kurento server is also deployed on a stand-alone container to estimate the performance overhead. Later, statistical analysis(ANOVA and differences of Standard error) is done over these metrics and conclusions are drawn.  Results: Based on the performed experiments and the extracted metrics, for One-to-One call application, Kubernetes showed better resource utilization for CPU and Network Traffic while it consumed more memory over Docker Swarm. Similar behaviour is observed for One-to-Many application. When application is scaled, the percent of resource utilization increase in Kubernetes is higher when compared to Docker Swarm, but overall resource utilization of Kubernetes is much lower than that of Docker Swarm.  Conclusions: WebRTC based Kurento media server is investigated in  Kubernetes and Docker Swarm. From the detailed analysis there is significant overhead in Docker Swarm than in Kubernetes for CPU Utilization and Network Traffic. For Memory Utilization, this is opposite. Packet Loss resulted in 0 percent as network transfer is within the same network . By considering all the metrics and providing evidence that numbers obtained in this thesis are statistically significant and not by fluctuations(ANOVA and post-hoc analysis), we can better recommend Kubernetes over Docker Swarm for Web based Real Time Communication.   However, not all applications need the complex deployment, scheduling, and scaling services (or the overhead) that Kubernetes offers. But to meet the increasing demand for seamless Real time communications, and to suffice user requirements, the overheard offered by it is acceptable.

Balajka, Pavel January 2021 (has links)
The thesis summarises thorough analysis of rules and mechanisms of Multiagent Contest for year 2020 followed by design of multiagent group which will try to succeed in a simulation of the mentioned contest with the best results. The design was created according to the Prometheus metodology from general view (scenarios, goals) to specific details (agent plans, messages). Implementation is realized through JaCaMo system, which is also briefly described in this paper. Then the pros and cons of JaCaMo system are analyzed. Lastly the implemented solution of this work is compared with other teams that participated in the mentioned agent competition this year.

Prometheus in sound : one hundred years of musical adaptations of the myth of Prometheus: Beethoven, Shubert, Liszt, Wolf, Parry, Fauré and Scriabin

Mattson, Lurene 01 January 1972 (has links)
The Promethean characteristics of contemporary young iconoclasts as they have expressed disapproval of the society which they have inherited and in which they feel entrapped prompted this study. Our interest here lies with the nature of the dissatisfaction rather than with ways of expressing it. If follows that out concern is primarily with the gift of Prometheus - the fire rather than with the rebellion and defiance associated with the demigod who took action against the tyranny of Zeus.

Narcisse, une création de Prométhée : l'impact libérateur et anesthésiant d’internet sur la nouvelle génération grecque / Narcissus, a creation of Prometheus : the liberating and narcotic impact of the internet on the new greek generation

Papaioannou, Theodoros 08 December 2017 (has links)
From the promethean man to Narcissus there is only a small step: technology. A lot of things change every time a new technology enters our lives. This thesis attempts to comprehend the way the new Greek generation makes use of the new cyber technology and how modern Greek people are influenced as well as transformed by this use. By means of a qualitative survey in the form of questionnaires administered to young people we attempted to explore how they use these media to satisfy basic needs of their social life such as information and communication, how they perceive their relation with the media and how they are influenced by them.By nature, internet is the medium which helps the individual to overcome his corporal limits extending parts of his nervous system to the medium. Moreover, Facebook gives the opportunity to each one of its users to project a profile created by himself and live within it. The user who watches the screen appears to be a contemporary version of Narcissus once again complying with new sensory perceptions. The computer connected to the internet is the major medium that causes these modifications. That’s what Prometheus did. His invention gave birth to a new human era. What becomes the principal objective in our day and age is without any doubt to move from the condition of pathetic Narcissus to the condition of the artful navigator in the virtual ocean. The present research has hopefully contributed to some extent to the social research related to the contemporary virtual era.
