Dimensions of depression and psychopathy in psychiatric inpatients: contribution of the RC scales

Alcazar, Carla 07 1900 (has links)
While depression and psychopathy have long been believed to be mutually exclusive traits, a number of MMPI-2 studies have found relatively high correlations between the original Depression and Psychopathic Deviate Scales. This high degree of covariation might be accounted for by the often observed result that all of the basic nine scales of the MMPI-2 are saturated with a general negative affect factor called demoralization. Recently, a series of studies were completed in which this demoralization factor was extracted from the original basic nine scales and they were restructured such that they would each be a more "pure" measure of the clinical dimensions they were intended to assess. These new scales are called the Restructured Clinical (RC) Scales. The major purpose of this study was to examine the items found on the original Depression and Psychopathy Scales for multidimensionality and item overlap, and to compare these scales with their RC counterparts. It was assumed that there would be little if any covariation of the RC Depression and RC Psychopathic Deviate Scales as has been found with the original Depression and Psychopathic Deviate Scales. A factor analysis of the items from each scale was done. Results showed that the original scales indeed had significant item overlap as well as multidimensionality. In addition, the new RC Scales were shown to be much purer in their measurement of their respective constructs. This study provides strong support for the practice of including at least these two scales in the clinical assessment of depression and psychopathy. It would appear that these restructured scales have met the goal of refining the measurement of these two dimensions. / "July 2005." / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of Psychology.

A Comparative Study of Psychological Tests Used in Personnel Selection in Taiwan

Tuan, Mei-yu 07 September 2006 (has links)
Through varying personnel selection methods, corporations have obtained top minds that own the abilities to promote the companies¡¦ competitiveness. Among these methods, psychological tests, due to their characteristics of being objective, scientific and low-cost, have been adopted by more and more employers. This paper is to examine whether the content of these tests conforms to the standards for evaluating standardized tests. The examination is done by analyzing tests materials collected from human resource consulting companies and professional psychological test publishers. The data used in this research come mostly from the Internet. They are classified into three categories: General information, technical information, and practical evaluation. Among the three, the amount of practical evaluation information, which relates mainly to the quality of a test, is the least. My survey shows that personality tests are the major development tests of human resource consulting companies and professional psychological test publishers, and that human resource consulting companies have got the advantage of developing psychological tests.

Response distortion and social desirability in high-level executives

Schnure, Katherine Anne 17 November 2009 (has links)
The effect of Socially Desirable Responding (SDR) and response distortion on personality and selection measures has been debated for decades (Edwards, 1957b; Messick&Jackson, 1961; Morgeson et al., 2007, Ones, Viswesvaran,&Reiss, 1996). One area of this broad topic that has received less attention over the years has been the effectiveness of the scales used to measure SDR when evidence of potential response distortion is present. Using a MANOVA, this study found significant differences between job candidate and incumbent responses on the scales of the 16PF (Cattell&Cattell, 1995), which can be indicative of SDR (Rosse et al., 1998). However, no difference between the groups was found on the Impression Management scale used to measure SDR. Differences based on the job function of the respondents were also explored.
