Reflecting on psychotherapeutic changes: therapeutic factors and the transformation of anger expression / Psichoterapinių pokyčių refleksijos: terapiniai veiksniai ir pykčio raiškos kaita

Lately scientists highlight the necessity of better understanding the subjective side of psychotherapeutic process. The aim of this research was to reveal subjectively important psychotherapeutic changes, significant therapeutic factors, and the transformation of anger expression in psychotherapy. Seven female clients, who had accomplished their long-term therapy course and finished it in 1 – 3-year period, participated in the study. Data were collected using the method of psychotherapeutic story. Participants were asked to tell their psychotherapy story, mentioning what was most important in the process of their psychotherapy. The processing of data was based on the principles of thematic analysis (Braun, Clarke, 2006). The analysis of psychotherapeutic stories revealed a dynamic and miscellaneous picture of the respondents’ therapeutic change, encompassing their direct therapeutic experience, its prehistory, and after-therapy processes. Emotional experiences, the development of interpersonal relationship, awareness of the motivational sphere of needs are mentioned as subjectively important therapeutic changes. Psychotherapeutic stories revealed the importance of change of anger expression in subjective psychotherapeutic experience. Respondents relate psychotherapeutic changes to their own active involvement, the quality of therapeutic relationship, and the dynamics of inner processes. / Pastaraisiais dešimtmečiais pabrėžiama būtinybė tyrinėti psichoterapijos pokyčius bei veiksnius pasitelkiant kokybinius tyrimo metodus, pažvelgti į psichoterapijos procesą per kliento prizmę. Tiriamųjų buvo prašoma papasakoti savo psichoterapijos istoriją įvardijant tai, kas joms buvo svarbiausia terapijoje. Tyrimo rezultatai buvo analizuojami remiantis teminės analizės metodu (Braun, Clarke, 2006). Psichoterapinių istorijų analizė atskleidė dinamišką ir daugialypį terapinių pokyčių vaizdą, apimantį tiek tiriamųjų tiesioginę terapinę patirtį, tiek jos priešistorę bei po terapijos vykstančius procesus. Subjektyviai išgyvenami terapiniai pokyčiai apima emocinius išgyvenimus, tarpasmeninių santykių kaitą, motyvacinės poreikių srities įsisąmoninimą. Pykčio raiškos kaita subjektyviai patiriama kaip svarbus terapinis pokytis. Kalbėdamos apie terapinius veiksnius, tiriamosios akcentuoja savo aktyvaus indėlio į terapiją svarbą, kalba apie terapinių santykių kokybę, vidinių procesų dinamiką.

A Qualitative Inquiry into the Treatment Experience of Adolescent Females in a Relationally Based Therapeutic Boarding School

Individualism, the assumption that persons are self-contained and primarily act for the sake of the self, is prevalent in American culture and has arguably perpetuated numerous psychological and societal ills. Relationality, the assumption that persons are always and inextricably constituted by relationships, has been posited as a philosophical and practical alternative to individualist culture. Several scholars, both inside and outside of psychology, have developed relational concepts and practices, including some who have elucidated a relational approach to psychotherapy (e.g., Slife and Wiggins, 2009). This study examines the implications and effects of this therapeutic approach, particularly exploring relationality's therapeutic success in countering the implications of individualism. Greenbrier Academy, an adolescent female boarding school located in West Virginia, has adopted relationality as its guiding therapeutic ethic. This study utilized hermeneutically modified grounded-theory methods to inquire into the lived experience of students at Greenbrier Academy. Eight students were interviewed and the researcher recorded observations of daily programing over a six-day period. Results indicated that Greenbrier's students' experienced marked changes in the quality and meaning of their interpersonal relationships. They increasingly cared for and served their relationships, engaged in more intimate relationships with others, approached (rather than retreated from) others' differences, viewed others more holistically, and accepted personal responsibility in relation to their context.

The effect of childhood maltreatment on psychotherapy effectiveness in adulthood: Implications for counselors

Recent gains in understanding the effects of childhood maltreatment on the development of the brain and nervous system, combined with the revelation that nearly all psychiatric neuroimaging studies have had an unrecognized confound in childhood maltreatment, imply the possibility that psychotherapy treatment effectiveness studies have been similarly confounded by childhood maltreatment. This study examines whether treatment-seeking adults exposed to childhood maltreatment respond differently to psychotherapy than do individuals who report no history of childhood maltreatment. Response to therapy is conceptualized in this study as reduction in symptom measures pre- and post- treatment, as well as client dropout. It is hypothesized that people with a history of childhood maltreatment experience psychotherapy differently, may experience differences in symptom reduction and be more likely to drop out of treatment, than people with no history of childhood maltreatment. The current study examines psychotherapy effectiveness in symptom reduction and dropout rates of clients who experienced childhood maltreatment as compared to those with no history of childhood maltreatment.

Ověření účinnosti skupinové práce s pacienty po získaném poškozením mozku / Effectiveness of group work with acquired brain injury patients

Aquired brain injury (ABI) of various etiology is one of the major causes of health impairment, disability and death in adult population. It has a wide scale of physical, psychological and social consequences impacting the lives of patients and their relatives. Neuropsychological rehabilitation (individual and group) has become an integrated part of the complex rehabilitation of ABI supported by evidence-based research and practice. Theory and research suggest new perspective on psychotherapy and its role in this process, though its use in the Czech republic may be limited. The goal of the theoretical part of this thesis was to explore the status of the knowledge and practice of neuropsychological rehabilitation of ABI with focus on group work and psychotherapy and their effectiveness. The empirical part aimed to analyze effectiveness of short-term group dynamic psychotherapy in sample of patients with ABI. The intervention was applied in a realistic setting of two selected rehabilitation centers. The patients completed European Brain Injury Questionnaire for Patients (EBIQ-P) and Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale pre-, after 6 weeks and post- intervention covering researched symptoms.
