Understanding change : public space constructin in Bogota, Colombia, the Plaza de San VictorinoCoronado Cabrera, Maria Camila 08 July 2014 (has links)
Bogotá is a city that has seen rapid change in the recent years. By the 1990’s the city’s public space was in crisis and its elements were being used in inappropriate ways; some were even been illegally privatized. Inside the city’s multiple ills, a politically driven set of changes began to happen. By the turn of the millennium an urban renaissance of the city originated. Multiple public spaces, libraries, schools, and new transportation systems were built and implemented by different city Mayors. At present, after the initial thrill and polemics developed during the construction of the new public spaces, some of the major changes have settled. This situation makes it a good moment to develop an analysis of the performance of these public spaces today, in order to understand how they have evolved along with Bogotano’s during these years. The Plaza de San Victorino located in the downtown area of the city was one of the major renovation projects that the city underwent around the year 2000. Its analysis is representative of the evolution of Bogota’s public spaces during these years. This MDS makes an assessment from the point of view of the users of the Plaza de San Victorino. By making a Post-occupancy evaluation of this recently constructed public space using participant observations, mappings and surveys, this MDS generates a set of design recommendations for the Plaza and a design proposal for its improvement. / text

Austin south shore : an experiential design strategyDe Regt, Elizabeth Laura 08 July 2014 (has links)
This project takes an experiential design approach to urban planning. By focusing on the public spaces of an urban area, it develops a design process based on the experiences felt by those walking down the street: both visitors and residents. Each type of user has a different experience, and a variety of building-street interface typologies have therefore been developed. This project uses the same calculations and basic framework from Dean Almy’s Texas Futures Lab studio of Spring 2013. It then looks into the various user groups and adjusted the public spaces to provide more variety, reflecting the various experiences sought after by these users. / text

From "contested space" to "shared place" : options for public realm enhancement in Vancouver’s Downtown EastsideFranks, Jennifer Anne 11 1900 (has links)
The primary objective of this thesis is to examine the opportunities and constraints for
transforming "contested" public space into "shared" place in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
This examination is informed by: a literature review of public space theory; a review of City of
Vancouver policies pertaining to public space conditions in the Downtown Eastside; a case study
of community-driven public realm initiatives in Pioneer Square in Seattle, Washington; personal
experience both working in, and observing conditions in the Downtown Eastside, and a review of
current initiatives in the area that are working towards improving the public realm in the area
while building consensus between opposing community groups.
This research indicates that public spaces play an important role in the everyday lives of city
dwellers, particularly for those who, due to homelessness and poverty, rely on public space for
recreation and socialization, and in many cases, to live. However, as the central city is becoming
an increasingly attractive place to live for middle and upper income households, conflicts can
ensue over who has the "right" to use the public realm. What often occurs is the exclusion of the
poor and marginalized segment of the population to "make way" for amenities that serve higher
income residents and visitors.
Conditions in the Downtown Eastside have deteriorated, yet at the same time, development both
within and around the area has created distrust and hostility between different community groups.
However, recent initiatives are working to make improvements while building trust between
different, often hostile community groups. Ideally, planning for the public realm should have a
significant amount of community involvement and control. The case study of Pioneer Square
indicates that this is possible, although a sufficient amount of trust and consensus is needed from
the outset. While the Downtown Eastside possesses many attributes which provide opportunities
for public realm improvements, planners from outside the community should play a significant
role in any initiatives, due to the lack of consensus and tension between community interests.

Desmos: Design, Inventiveness and Collaboration in a Time of CrisisIkonomou, Athanasios 08 July 2013 (has links)
The modernist polykatikia typology (translating to multi-dwelling) arose in Athens after the population boom of the 1960s. Now sixty years later, the demands of the city have changed. No longer is there a need to build houses for people, but a need to focus on the workplace. As economic turmoil is pressuring Greece towards larger, more efficient operations, the thesis seeks to signify the importance of micro-economies of informal Athens. Given that energy and vibrancy are defining characteristics of the city, it considers how the workplace can intersect with public space to create new relationships in Athens. By curating talent, people and expertise which already exist in Athens, the aim is to propose workplaces based on resource sharing within underutilized zones in the city: an urban gesture which re-imagines the city blocks of Athens as a system of micro-agoras.
