We use the hydrodynamical model of continuous particle emission to study several ex- perimental data from SPS/CERN. Data on strange particle ratios from WA85 and WA97 Collaborations are used to determine a set of initial conditions for the hydrodynamical flow. We test the self-consistency of the model by studying several other experimental data by using the same initial conditions that reproduce strange particle ratios. We show that the transverse mass spectra from WA35, WA85, NA49 and WA97 can be well repro- duced. We also reproduce particle abundances, including the tt one. The big advantage of this approach (in addition to being corroborated by microscopical models) is that it may solve, in a natural way, some of the problems met by the standard hydrodynamical approach with sudden freeze-out: possible too high densities, too small pion abundance and wrong 'ômega' temperature / Mestre

Collectivity in Large and Small Collision Systems: Flow in Xe+Xe Collisions and Sensitivity to the Presence of Hard Scatterings in pp Collisions

Yin, Pengqi January 2023 (has links)
The Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions has been shown to behave like a nearly perfect fluid, characterized by a very low ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density. Significant measurements in large collision systems have improved the constraints on the value of 𝜂/𝑠. However, the precise temperature dependence of 𝜂/𝑠 still remains unknown. The interplay between viscous effects and initial geometry fluctuations is important that requires further investigation. Another key open question in the study of multi-particle production is the relationship between the “ridge” – observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities – and hard or semi-hard scattering processes in small collision systems. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. This dissertation presents two analyses. The first analysis measures flow harmonics 𝜈2–𝜈6 in 3 𝜇b^-1 of Xe+Xe collisions at √𝑠𝖭𝖭 = 5.44 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The centrality, multiplicity, and 𝑝_T dependence of the 𝜈n values obtained using two-particle correlations and template-fit procedure are presented, and the measurements are compared with those in Pb+Pb collisions and 𝑝+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV. The 𝜈n values in Xe+Xe collisions are observed to be larger than those in Pb+Pb collisions for n = 2, 3, and 4 in the most central events. However, the 𝜈n values in Xe+Xe collisions become smaller than those in Pb+Pb collisions with decreasing centrality or increasing harmonic order n. The 𝜈n in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions are also compared as a function of the mean number of participating nucleons and the measured charged-particle multiplicity in the detector. The 𝜈3 values in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions are observed to be similar at the same ⟨𝑁_part⟩ or multiplicity, but the other harmonics are significantly different. The second analysis studies two-particle correlations in pp collisions at 13 TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8 pb⁻¹, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, 𝜈2, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

From hot lattice QCD to cold quark stars

Schulze, Robert 22 February 2011 (has links)
A thermodynamic model of the quark-gluon plasma using quasiparticle degrees of freedom based on the hard thermal loop self-energies is introduced. It provides a connection between an established phenomenological quasiparticle model – following from the former using a series of approximations – and QCD – from which the former is derived using the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism and a special parametrization of the running coupling. Both models allow for an extrapolation of first-principle QCD results available at small chemical potentials using Monte-Carlo methods on the lattice to large net baryon densities with remarkably similar results. They are used to construct equations of state for heavy-ion collider experiments at SPS and FAIR as well as quark and neutron star interiors. A mixed-phase construction allows for a connection of the SPS equation of state to the hadron resonance gas. An extension to the weak sector is presented as well as general stability and binding arguments for compact stellar objects are developed. From the extrapolation of the most recent lattice results [Baz09, Bor10b] the existence of bound pure quark stars is not suggested. However, quark matter might exist in a hybrid phase in cores of neutron stars.

Mesure des corrélations gamma-hadrons et hadrons-hadrons dans les collisions pp à 7 TeV pour l'étude de la fragmentation des jets avec l'expérience ALICE du LHC / Gamma-hadrons and hadrons-hadrons correlation measurements in pp collisions at 7TeV to study jet fragmentation with ALICE at LHC

Mao, Yaxian 03 June 2011 (has links)
The ALICE experiment, which uses the ultra-relativistic heavy-ions collisions produced by the LHC at CERN, is dedicated to the study of a new state of nuclear matter, which could be composed of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Among the probes sharing information on the medium properties, those relative to the production of high transverse momentum jets are very interesting. The analysis presented in this thesis is focused on photon-jet events, which contain one photon of high transverse momentum and one jet emitted in the opposite direction. The jet comes from the fragmentation of the initial parton, after passing through the medium. The thesis includes a simulation study of the relevant observables for the photon-hadron correlation measurement and an analysis of first data from LHC in proton-proton collisions. Preliminary results on the transverse momentum of incident partons and on the correlation function have been obtained.

Phase transitions in holographic QCD and instanton crystals

Alam, Muhammad Sohaib 06 November 2014 (has links)
We investigate phase transitions in holographic models of QCD. In chapter I, we explore the effect of constant external U(1) fields on the physics of chiral symmetry breaking, as realized in the D3/D7 model. We discover that this model exhibits the phenomenon of magnetic catalysis, which is what one would expect from a weakly coupled field theory intuition. In chapter II, we continue exploring the effect of external U(1) fields but now on the backreacted D3/D7 model, where the backreaction is obtained via a smearing procedure. We again find the magnetic catalysis effect, however the results differ from the previous case depending on the backreaction parameters. In chapter III, we investigate lattices of instantons in the D4/D8 model of chiral symmetry breaking. These instanton lattices can change dimensionality, and in particular we investigate the 1D [right arrow] 2D transition as a simpler case of the more complicated 3D [right arrow] 4D transition which is conjectured to be holographically dual to the baryonic to quarkyonic phase transition. Besides this interpretation, one could also view this as a hypothetical condensed matter system. We have a lattice of instantons dominated by two-body forces, whose interactions depend not only on their mutual distance in physical space but also on their relative orientations in the internal isospace. We obtain a rich variety of instanton crystals whose description could serve to be useful beyond holography. / text
