Deacon

Deacon is a novel about how much the narrator loves the house where his grandparents used to live, loves strawberries, loves his dog. It is largely a novel about love. It is also a novel about rivalry, fixation, enemies, and neighbors via the character of the Deacon, and the narrator's perceived rivalry with the Deacon. The novel explores the ebbs and flows of this dynamic, as well as the rivalry's efficacy and reality. The narrator becomes frustrated with a desire to love and enjoy the place for a few quiet days with his dog, who he loves, and his inability to not let his paranoia regarding the Deacon cloud his days. / Master of Fine Arts / Deacon is a novel about love, rivalry, and to some degree, madness.

The purpose of this study is to examine how primary school teachers work with the oral communicative ability of students who are quiet or unwilling to communicate freely in the classroom. This study aims to answer the question: which methods and strategies are most beneficial for the quiet students and how do teachers discover and assess these students? A qualitative method using semi-structured interviews will be used as the primary means of answering this question. The purpose of these interviews is to document the teachers’ experiences working with quiet students. It appears that the teachers interviewed have or have had quiet students in their classes. Furthermore, the teachers use different strategies that benefit the more quiet students. The conclusion is that many of these students become neglected due to the fact that teachers do not regard quiet students as a problem or something that is a priority. Additionally, the absence of sub goals, specific plans and not follow up results lead to few opportunities for quiet students to develop.

Deep-tow study of magnetic anomalies in the Pacific Jurassic Quiet Zone

The Jurassic Quiet Zone (JQZ) is a region of low amplitude, difficult-to-correlate magnetic anomalies located over Jurassic oceanic crust. We collected 1200 km of new deep-tow magnetic anomaly profiles over the Pacific JQZ that complement 2 deep-tow profiles reported in Sager et al. (1998). Our primary goals were to extend the correlation of deep-tow magnetic anomalies farther back in time, to evaluate the correlatability and repeatability of anomalies, and to refine the Jurassic geomagnetic polarity reversal time scale (GPTS). Correlations of anomalies were excellent over M34 and over supposedly older seafloor to the south of ODP Site 801. In contrast, the correlation in the region between M34 and Site 801 was difficult. Using anomaly correlation models, we made magnetic polarity block models to establish a revised Jurassic GPTS extending until 169.4 Ma. Age calibration was accomplished with radiometric dates from two ODP holes. Systematic changes in anomaly amplitudes occur along the survey lines with the amplitudes decreasing backward in time and then increasing again in the oldest part of survey area. The zone of the most difficult to correlate anomalies corresponds to a period of ~4 m.y. that appears to have an abrupt end. This low amplitude zone suggests unusual magnetic behavior during the Jurassic. It has been said that many of the larger anomalies are likely caused by changes in polarity, whereas smaller anomalies may be intensity fluctuations. Although it is impossible to identify which anomalies are caused by reversals and which are not, magnetization structures observed in ODP Hole 801C suggest that many of the smallest anomalies, particularly around Hole 801C indicate polarity reversals. We concluded that (1) the new data demonstrates repeatability and correlatability of the JQZ magnetic anomalies implying that they are seafloor spreading lineations and (2) good correlations made new GPTS models extending back to 169.4 Ma; and (3) the origin of the JQZ may be a combination of rapid polarity reversals in the Jurassic low magnetic dipole field and closely spaced, tilted magnetization structure in the oceanic crust.

Quiet encroachment and spatial morphologies in Jallah Town, Monrovia, Liberia

This paper will build upon the idea that informal settlements communities develop characteristic spatial morphologies as a response to outside forces. By understanding those forces and the resulting use of space, in particular public spaces, we can develop more appropriate urban design and planning interventions based in local realities. I begin by presenting the urban theories of Christopher Alexander and Bill Hillier, which provide analytical tools for understanding public space morphologies and the uses of public space. I then introduce Asef Bayat’s concept of quiet encroachment to more fully theorize the characteristics of public space as a response to the outside forces, in particular as an informal means of claiming space and rights to the city. Finally, I draw on this analytical and theoretical framework to analyze public space in the informal settlement of Jallah Town, in Monrovia, Liberia. I conclude by outlining how these analytical and theoretical tools can be used to further urban theory and international development and planning practice in informal settlements. / text

Measuring the quasar luminosity function below the detection threshold

>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The radio emission of radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN) is thought to be from star formation and AGN related emission. I investigate these sources using 1.4 GHz radio data from FIRST and three optical quasars samples from the SDSS: (i) a volume-limited sample in the redshift range 0:2 < z < 0:4 defined by Mi < -23 (ii) magnitude-limited sample in the redshift range 1:8 < z < 2:5 defined by mr ≤ 18:5 and (iii) a uniform sample in the redshift range 0:2 < z < 3:5 (divided into 12 redshift bins). I constructed radio source counts and radio luminosity functions (RLFs) using the optical quasars detected in FIRST, which are consistent with literature results obtained using SDSS and NVSS quasars. There are differences at the low uxs end because of the different resolutions of FIRST and NVSS. I applied a median stack method to the 12 redshift bins of the uniform sample and found that the median ux decreases from 182 µJy in the lowest redshift bin to 39 µJy and the highest redshift bin. This is because the high redshift quasars although more luminous than their low redshift counterparts, they are much further away so they have lower uxes. I probed the quasar radio source counts to lower levels using reconstructed source counts obtained by applying the Bayesian stack technique. The reconstructed radio source counts were then used to constructed the quasar RLF to lower levels, where I found: (i) for z < 1 the constructed quasar RLF has the same slope as the detected quasars, suggesting that like the detect quasars their radio emission is dominated by AGN related emission (ii) above z = 1 the constructed RLF steepens with redshift, which suggests the strong link between accretion rate and radio jet power is gradually breaking down towards faint optical luminosities at high redshift. / National Astrophysics and Space Science Program (NASSP) and SKA Africa

I believe architecture is a product of construction and will. The building either conforms to the environment or is set against it. Architecture manifests its existence from the differentiation between the environment it creates and the one that exists. However it is not necessary to articulate the existence of architecture by intrusive acts. This thesis proposes a building of formal simplicity standing autonomously but not arrogantly amidst a larger setting. It is important to create spaces that evoke a quiet emotional response. Programmatically the project is a public library located in Nanjing, China. It also serves as community space for the area. It is a place intended for people reading, meeting others, and various cultural activities. / Master of Architecture
