ABSTRACT: This research aims to investigate the fictional construction of women in Rachel de Queiroz from the confrontation between hers novels O Quinze, Dôra, Doralina and Memorial de Maria Moura, starring women, and hers journalistic chronicles published in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, specifically those where there is mention of the writer positions on the female image and the justification of their way of thinking it. This study appears by suggesting there is a mismatch between the represented of the woman in fiction and hers construction elaborated in newspaper columns. Therefore, approaches will be used by researchers and theorists on women in literature (as Heloisa Buarque de Hollanda, Nelly Novaes Coelho, Ligia Chiappini, etc.), women's writing in the newspaper and the relationship between the paper and the literature in the view of Nelson Werneck Sodre and Alceu Amoroso Lima, for example, in addition to analyzing issues related to socio-cultural aspects of Brazil, which directly or indirectly manifested in the representation of women in Rachel de Queiroz narratives. Highlighting the novelist of fact have been considered an important voice about being female, shows an important analysis that encompasses the image symbolized woman for hers subversive protagonists, in comparison with the very thought of the writer about the way she sees this subject to also understand how establishes the formation of identity in the relationship between the psychological aspect of the individual and the transformation of the outside world.. This comparison aims to develop reflections on racheliana woman, and understand how her posture view sometimes as contradictory, can be understood as an offshoot of their own socio-cultural issues in the context and thinking of Brazilian society / CNPq: 33.654.831/0001-36

Mass Media and the Evolution of the Environmental Movement: 1960-1979

Anguish, Donald 01 January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines how particular forms of mass media spurred and guided the United States environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Its objective is to better understand how mass media contributed to the evolution of the environmental movement. Three particular types of media form the basis of this study: writing (books, newspapers, and magazines), audio-visual material (movies and television), and photographs. These three mediums of communications and their intrinsic effects on the human psyche and society as a whole are major contributing factors to a raised environmental consciousness, a lasting legacy of environmentalism, and the promotion of the environmental movement itself.

Das três estrelas à pirâmide: um estudo das personagens femininas em As três Marias de Rachel de Queiroz e As meninas de Lygia Fagundes Telles / From the three stars to pyramid: a study of the female characters in As três Marias by Rachel de Queiroz and As meninas by Lygia Fagundes Telles

Soares, Daniela Rezende 21 September 2018 (has links)
A first reading of As três Marias (1939), by Rachel de Queiroz, and As meninas (1973), by Lygia Fagundes Telles, evidences the use of a similar composition resource in both novels. This resource consists in the use of triads of female characters who act as the protagonists of the narratives. In the first case, the group of figures is composed of Maria Augusta, Maria José and Maria da Glória, whereas in the second, of Lorena, Lia and Ana Clara. This dissertation proposes the analysis of the novels\' formal aspects, such as the study of the characters, of the narrative focus and of time and space issues, as well as the analysis of content related to the triads, arguing that the use of such resource allows both authors to represent different possibilities of the feminine existence in Brazilian society in the 1930s and 1970s. It is assumed that the triadic construction of the characters constitutes one of the central structuring aspects of the novels, and it can be considered as the element that allows Rachel de Queiroz and Lygia Fagundes Telles to develop the feminine and the feminist content observed in the narratives. After the chapters dedicated to the novels analysis and interpretation from a literary theorys perspective, a comparative reading between both literary works is presented as a conclusion in order to demonstrate not only the similarities between texts, but mainly their fundamental differences.

Embodying nature

Singel, Rachel Jeanne 01 May 2013 (has links)
My imagery comes from what I see in nature. From a hollow in a tree to a break in the clouds, absence is a recurring motif. These spaces intrigue me, and I begin to wonder where they might lead. The structures becomes one rounded, spreading volume. By printing on both sides of the paper, two images intertwine: one drawing attention and the other subtly shifting beneath the surface. The work becomes an expression of the intricacies and depth of natural forms. Ultimately, I want to take on the processes of nature and embody them in my own works of art.

Rachel Whiteread : casting and collecting childhood

Ashton, Jenna Carine January 2014 (has links)
Responding to the works of artist Rachel Whiteread (b. 1963), this research aims to interrogate the social and spatial experiences of childhood, starting from the personal, childhood memory. Whiteread offers a curious collection of objects, furniture, toys, utensils, photographs and junk. Casting and collecting are Whiteread’s primary methods of artistic creation, of creative play, and these processes are at the centre of this thesis. Casting and collecting transforms objects – their uses and forms, and thus subsequent meanings and associations. Melanie Klein (1882-1960) was an early pioneer of child analysis, developing her distinctive method of the play technique. A key founder of British objects relations theory, Klein’s method incorporated creative play with objects and toys. Klein and Whiteread hold objects in common; play sits alongside casting and collecting. I use Klein’s theories to open up the childhood house of Whiteread and her methods of casting and collecting. The three chapters of this thesis, Closeted Childhoods: Closet (1988); Siblings and Seriality: Untitled [One Hundred Spaces] (1995); A Photographic Portrait of House (1993-94), draw on different aspects of Kleinian and psychoanalytical theory in response to Whiteread’s own childhood memory-work. Kleinian themes addressed include destruction and reparation, guilt and envy, loss and mourning, with the conclusion returning to that first object, the mother, and the presence of the maternal in Whiteread’s works. Primarily, I argue that Whiteread’s sculptural casts and installations are those materialised secrets of hidden and concealed childhoods denied by a mythology of familial unity. Significantly, I consider how the autobiographical childhood remembrance holds relevance for wider concerns of social and spatial experience – public and private.

Finalmente, nos interessa pensar se estas obras têm algo a dizer à mulher contemporânea ou se ficaram datadas / During the Middle Ages, the representation of male / female duality should represent a hierarchy in which man appeared as superior and woman carry a lower image and submissive in relation to men. This order prevailed in the Western world for centuries and only from the nineteenth century the world began to realize a more organized movement by women in search of independence, autonomy, and a place beside the man rather than the lower position which she was relegated for so long. In the novels O quinze and As três Marias, the cearense writer Rachel de Queiroz has acclimated women in the first decades of the twentieth century; women who instead of following the model imposed by the patriarchal society in which they should prepare for marriage and motherhood, are strong, independent and emancipated. By the speaking of the narrators of the two novels it is clear their position about the status of women seeking to break free of the patriarchal model, after all there is no impartial and neutrality; Their point of view is very important for the development of narrative and the ways that these will follow. Knowing the position of the narrators, the understanding of the concept of autonomy is necessary. Also, it’s interesting to think about the overview of women's achievements in Brazil showing how these issues are placed on the years 20/30. From this background, it’s interesting to think about how autonomy materializes within the novels. However, the achievement of independence has a price; the achievements did not occur without conflict and many women were stigmatized in both personal and social point of view. Finally, it concerns us wonder if these works have something to say to contemporary woman or were dated
