The analysis focuses on the investigation of the social elements that appear in the narrative, as components for guiding the behavior of the protagonist into the context of the Revolution of 1930 in Brazil, with its social and political upheavals, Industrialization caused by external influences, and the eve of World War II. All these elements are related to the drama of heroine s life, revealing her perspective on historical events in the country. As the discourse of the novel is a memoir, the analysis of the work focuses on the story of the narrator to make considerations about its transformations into fictional scenario, ie, to understand how the narrative unfols as fragments on the national scene are revealed in the readers imaginary and how the protagonist s dramas also accompany these transformations. The focus of this study will occur on the Dôra s report to understand the relationship between building hers image of openness and the possibility to relate the character with the symbol of a new woman, conceived a notion that considers the social and ideological dimension of literature. / A presente dissertação investiga como o romance de Rachel de Queiroz, Dôra, Doralina, representa as transformações sociais na imagem feminina, em diálogo com as relações e influências do contexto sociocultural brasileiro da década de 30. A análise se concentra na investigação dos elementos sociais que atuam na tessitura narrativa, como componentes norteadores para os comportamentos da protagonista, tendo como pano de fundo o contexto da Revolução de 30 no Brasil, com suas revoltas sociais e embates políticos, a Industrialização oriunda de influências externas, e a véspera da Segunda Guerra Mundial, relacionando-se com o drama de vida da protagonista, revelando a sua perspectiva diante dos acontecimentos históricos do país. Tendo em vista que o romance se apresenta em forma de relato memorialístico, concentramo-nos na análise da figura da narradora para tecer considerações a respeito de sua transformação no cenário ficcional, isto é, para entender a forma como a narrativa se desenvolve a medida que os fragmentos sobre o cenário nacional vão se construindo no imaginário do leitor, e os dramas pessoais vividos por ela também vão se mostrando e acompanhando tais desenvolvimentos. O foco do estudo dar-se-á em torno do relato de Dôra para entender as relações entre a construção de sua imagem e a possibilidade de abertura para se pensar uma nova mulher , concebida dentro de uma noção em que considera a dimensão ideológica e social da literatura.

Du point des m?moires et des textes de fiction qui marquent l'?crite de Raquel de Queiroz, on cherche ? v?rifier comment la vie de l'auteur et sa production litt?raire serait corr?l?e avec une partie de l'histoire du Br?sil - la r?currence de la s?cheresse dans le Nord-Est et le communisme au Br?sil. Ainsi, on analyse les repr?sentations identitaires qui sont construits ? partir de la pr?servation de la m?moire culturelle, la relation que l'homme entretient avec la terre et, en particulier, avec une p?riode de la s?cheresse, et les frictions possibles qui sont form?es, comme le di?spora caus?e par le ph?nom?ne. On cherche d'identifier des approximations des images du sert?o dans le livre avec la pr?sente dans "La faim dans le Cear?" du langage po?tique, po?me de l??crivain portugais Guerre Junqueiro, qui met en sc?ne la s?cheresse de 1877 s'est produite sur les terres de Cear?, en plus de discuter le caract?re esth?tique de la repr?sentation de certaines images de la s?cheresse dans le roman. / O presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal analisar o car?ter memorial?stico do romance O Quinze (1930), da escritora cearense Rachel de Queiroz, bem como as correspond?ncias que a obra tece com a hist?ria. Partindo da perspectiva memorial?stica e ficcional, que marca os textos da escritora, busca-se verificar de que forma a vida da autora e a sua produ??o liter?ria estariam correlacionadas com parte da hist?ria brasileira ? a recorr?ncia do fen?meno da seca no Nordeste e o comunismo no Brasil. Assim, analisam-se as representa??es identit?rias que se constroem a partir da preserva??o da mem?ria cultural, das rela??es que o homem estabelece com a terra e, em particular, com o fen?meno da seca, al?m dos poss?veis atritos que da? s?o formados, a exemplo da di?spora ocasionada pelo fen?meno. Busca-se, ainda, identificar aproxima??es das imagens do sert?o narradas no romance com as presentes na linguagem po?tica de ?Fome no Cear??, poema do escritor portugu?s Guerra Junqueiro, que encena a seca de 1877 ocorrida nas terras cearenses, al?m de discutir o car?ter est?tico na representa??o de algumas imagens da seca feitas pelo romance.

Chronic relies on everyday events, allowing to know the context of a particular time and for this reason the choice of this kind as the object of this research. This work shows that the social and economic context of the twentieth century is present in chronic composition of Rachel de Queiroz, as a relevant contribution to Brazilian literature. This theme is related to the importance of intrinsic images to the field / city in chronic, the way of the dialogue, fit and at the same time, differ. Finally, this study is an attempt to expand the critical analysis of the writer, as many jobs are directed to gender studies in its romances, confirming its importance in the Brazilian scene of the twentieth century. / Esta disserta??o constitui um estudo das rela??es entre campo e cidade em cr?nicas de Rachel de Queiroz (1910-2003), a fim de compreender as aproxima??es entre o lugar, a paisagem e a manifesta??o do sujeito que busca afirmar sua identidade cultural. A cr?nica apoia-se em acontecimentos cotidianos, permitindo conhecer o contexto de uma determinada ?poca e por esta raz?o a escolha deste g?nero como objeto desta pesquisa. Este trabalho demonstra que a contextualiza??o social e econ?mica do s?culo XX est? presente na composi??o da cr?nica de Rachel de Queiroz, como uma contribui??o relevante ? literatura brasileira. Essa tem?tica est? relacionada com a import?ncia das imagens intr?nsecas ao campo/cidade na cr?nica, a forma como dialogam, se ajustam e, ao mesmo tempo, se difereciam. Enfim, este estudo constitui uma tentativa de ampliar a abordagem cr?tica acerca da escritora, j? que muitos trabalhos se direcionam aos estudos de g?nero em seus romances, confirmando sua import?ncia no cen?rio brasileiro do s?culo XX.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / Em 1948 chegava ao mercado livresco a primeira ediÃÃo do romance O Quinze de Rachel de Queiroz com o selo da Livraria Josà Olympio Editora. A supracitada ediÃÃo compunha a publicaÃÃo intitulada TrÃs Romances (O Quinze, JoÃo Miguel e Caminhos de Pedras). Entre os anos de 1938 a 1991, perÃodo no qual a editora deteve os direitos de publicaÃÃo das obras de Rachel Queiroz, foram produzidas 44 ediÃÃes para o primeiro romance da escritora. O presente trabalho analisa como o livro O Quinze tornou-se um produto editorial da Livraria Josà Olympio Editora, ou seja, como a editora produziu, publicizou, atribuiu significados e divulgou a obra.

Além desse trabalho experimental de transformar metáforas em conceitos para ampliar o alcance dessa produção estética, esquecida e apagada por um sistema literário, outro objetivo da pesquisa foi o de visibilizar uma rede de mulheres, em movimento, tendo como elo de articulação uma outra Rachel de Queiroz, agora como personagem conceitual. O método utilizado nessa difícil e instigante tarefa envolveu desde a bricolagem e o confronto de cenas literárias, cenas teóricas e historiográficas, a entrevistas com estudiosas do feminismo e outras mulheres em movimento, e, como resultados, a constatação de que nenhuma luta feminista contra o patriarcado e o capital mundial integrado é possível sem que escritoras proliferem a anarquia dos signos, sem que mulheres analfabetas, e sertanejas, façam do artesanato, ainda refugo da produção capitalista, uma forma de invenção de si mesmas. O devir matriarcal em Rachel de Queiroz é, portanto, a lição de que sem experimentar, anarquizar, falsificar, jogar, nenhuma cultura política subjetiva, assim como nenhum agenciamento do espontâneo e do cotidiano como prática política transformadora, é possível. / Salvador

Ao analisar as inscrições culturais e imposições de gênero, foi nosso intuito observar como essas mulheres reagem aos padrões estabelecidos de comportamento e às limitações impostas a elas em detrimento de serem mulheres. Por meio do método hermenêutico de interpretação de Paul Ricouer, pudemos problematizar as questões observadas no contexto dos romances aqui estudados e analisar as realidades e noções de gênero encontradas a partir dos conceitos de Judith Butler e Joan Scott. Foi proposta deste trabalho identificar os meios pelos quais se dão as resistências das Marias de Rachel de Queiroz em um contexto no qual os caminhos da mulher são sinônimos de limitação e invisibilidade. Através dos conceitos de gênero e do ser-se mulher, buscamos encontrar as várias significações para as subjetividades femininas presentes nos romances aqui analisados. Identificamos que é por meio da censura de suas liberdades que essas personagens criam formas para suas transgressões e resistências. O casamento, a religião, a sexualidade e o poder são aspectos aqui estudados, uma vez que fazem parte da conjuntura e instituições de dominação da mulher. As duas personagens aqui analisadas apresentam comportamentos de quebra da norma social, fazendo assim de seus descaminhos do normativo o escape para vivências que não seriam possíveis. Guta e Moura transgridem a concepção de mulher a elas impostas e criam suas próprias definições do ser mulher, denunciando os dispositivos por trás da imposição de gênero e compondo para si uma liberdade antes não experienciada / This study is a gender investigation composed by the analysis of Guta and Maria Moura (from As três Marias and Memorial de Maria Moura, by Rachel de Queiroz). When analyzing cultural inscriptions and gender impositions, it was our goal to observe how these women react to established patterns of behavior and to the imposed limitations duo to being women. Through Paul Ricoeuer's hermeneutic method we could question the observed contexts and analyze the realities and gender notions found through the concepts defended by Joan Scott and Judith Butler. The proposal of this study was to identify the means by which the resistances of Rachel de Queiros' Marias happen, in a context where being a woman is usually equal to limitation and invisibility. Through the concepts of gender and women's self-being (ser-se mulher), we searched to find the various meanings to the feminine subjectivities present in the analyzed books. We identified that it is through the censorship of their freedom that these women create the means for their transgressions and resistances. Marriage, religion, sexuality and power are some of the aspects here studied, once they are part of the context that structure women's domination. Both characters present behaviors of outbreak of social norms, using their own struggles to experience things that wouldn't be possible otherwise. These women, by escaping the given and imposed definition of woman, and creating their own, reveal the mechanisms behind gender imposition and create a sense of freedom never before experienced

It builds a connection that can be seized in the experiences she had in the places she knew and also in the literary works she wrote. In face of this geography that breathes in Rachel, we propose the thesis that a primary geography is immanent to her, applying to her life and her work. To reveal this geography, we presented people, landscapes and places of great importance to the writer; analyzed writings that allow us to relate the geographic and telluric aspects which permeate her journey; and have dedicated to the seven novels that Rachel wrote, unraveling worlds she (re)created in an imaginative way. Literary geography that (re)presents, in its own and original colors, the land and the people of Brazil, Northeast, Sertão and Ceará and reveals that destinations and searches of Rachel's characters translate her own paths. nÃo hà / This investigation refers to the intersemiotic translation of the novel O Quinze, a work published in 1930 by the writer Rachel de Queiroz, according to the categories of transparency and opacity. The analysis intends to point out the occurrence of a semiotic of light, motivated by the metaphor of the âglass tileâ, suggested in a poem by the mentioned novelist, in the translated text and in the developments that extrapolate the original textual plan. The analysis in question develops in two levels. The first one is composed by the challenge that represents the film adaptation of the mentioned literary work, by passing through its adaptation to comic books, video and TV; and the second one refers to the dichotomous literary relations of transparency versus opacity, studied within the context of a semiotic of light. Based on the discursive semiotic of Greimas and his followers, specially Denis Bertrand, Diana Luz Pessoa de Barros and Josà Luiz Fiorin, and of the intersemiotic translation proposed by Roman Jakobson, this study culminates in a quantitative and qualitative survey of the occurrence of transparency and opacity in the film adaptation of O Quinze, which is understood as a translation of the namesake novel, realized by Jurandir Oliveira in 2004. By crossing the mentioned theoretical references, the reading of the literary and movie texts, by admitting that the metaphor of the glass tile is an integrating category of the compared study, we conclude that it is possible to recognize either the opacity or the transparency effect in the work of Jurandir Oliveira. / Esta investigaÃÃo refere-se à traduÃÃo intersemiÃtica do romance O Quinze, obra lanÃada em 1930 pela escritora Rachel de Queiroz, segundo as categorias da transparÃncia e da opacidade. A anÃlise propÃe-se apontar a ocorrÃncia de uma semiÃtica da luz, motivada pela metÃfora da âtelha de vidroâ, sugerida em poema da referida romancista, no texto traduzido e nos desdobramentos que extrapolam o plano textual de origem. A anÃlise em questÃo se desenrola em dois nÃveis. O primeiro à composto pelo desafio que representa a adaptaÃÃo da obra literÃria referida para o cinema, passando por sua adaptaÃÃo para os quadrinhos, para o vÃdeo e para a TV; e o segundo refere-se Ãs relaÃÃes literÃrias dicotÃmicas de transparÃncia versus opacidade, estudadas dentro do contexto de uma semiÃtica da luz. Fundamentado na semiÃtica discursiva de Greimas e seus seguidores, com destaque para Denis Bertrand, Diana Luz Pessoa de Barros e Josà Luiz Fiorin, e da traduÃÃo intersemiÃtica proposta por Roman Jakobson, este estudo culmina com um levantamento quantitativo e qualitativo da ocorrÃncia da transparÃncia e da opacidade na adaptaÃÃo fÃlmica de O Quinze, entendido como traduÃÃo do romance homÃnimo, realizada por Jurandir Oliveira em 2004. A partir do cruzamento dos referenciais teÃricos mencionados, da leitura dos textos literÃrio e fÃlmico, admitindo-se como categoria integradora do estudo comparado a metÃfora da telha de vidro, conclui-se que à possÃvel reconhecer tanto a opacidade quanto o efeito de transparÃncia no trabalho de Jurandir Oliveira.

Environmental rhetoric has the capacity to render private citizens a concerned public. In doing so, it can prompt in individual practices of what, in classical rhetoric, was described as civic virtue and engage them in activities of responsible citizenship that work toward practical change. Within the recent tradition of environmental public discourse in the United States, Rachel Carson and Al Gore have each realized this capacity in their use of environmental rhetoric, by addressing, respectively, the issues of pesticide pollution and global warming in ways that galvanized citizens as an active public. This thesis examines the reasons behind this effectiveness. It asserts that both Carson and Gore employed a modernized epideictic as a rhetorical tool through which on the one hand, enabled them to invoke the shared values and associated emotions that have the capacity to bind citizens together in common cause, and on the other hand, to convey their own ethical character as civic speakers worthy of trust and emulation. My project in this thesis is to comprehensively track the process of arousing those political emotions and character in the writings of Rachel Carson and Al Gore, both of whom entered the public discourse in moments of environmental crises.
