Thus, the goal has generally, to investigate the relationship of language, and the subject of enunciation in Memorial of Maria Moura. And as specific objectives: a) understand the concept of language in this work, linking it to the notion of alíngua b) examine the slide of the names of the axes through metaphorical metonymy and c) studying the subject of the unconscious, linking it to movement of the tongue / alingua for the composition of the novel. Thus was developed a theoretical and empirical qualitative research, the methodological procedures adopted consisted in bringing categories of analysis derived from theories of Saussure, Benveniste, Jakobson, Lacan, Freud, and the work of Milner (1987), Authier-Revuz ( 1998-2004), among others. Considering that, on language, might be thought that linguists seek to convey the current functioning of language itself, however, regarding the functioning of poetic language, this bias is seen by the deviation of the slide and therefore conceived as a manifestation of linguistic practice. It would be his own literary creation, as expressions of an experience of language, an important contribution to a theory of language. With regard to the relationship between language and psychoanalysis, according to Flores (2002), there is a link without many problems, since the interest of the language is made since the first texts of Freud. Thus, a relationship that is established by the study of the subject and the sense to do so, remember Milner (1987), in the love of language, bringing some language issues, impossible to be described without having to do that, there is the intervention of the subject - the Lacanian subject. Dealing with issues of language, and the subject of enunciation, in a separate crossover of knowledge: the language, literature, and Lacanian psychoanalysis, finding them, anchor points in common, and even differences in the treatment of the phenomenon addressed, if the constitution the subject of the unconscious as a subject of enunciation. However, the interaction between linguistic and other fields of knowledge has been a controversial topic, it should be noted that, starting a research study involving the analysis of literary language long represented a task of risk, because as Maingueneau (1996, p. 1), the relationship between language and Analysis of Literature are not a clear, above all, separated by a gap. To some, the relationship between linguistics and literature is usually seen as unilateral, that is what is sought is the contribution of the science of language to understand the literary text / A presente dissertação tem um objeto de estudo situado entre três áreas do saber. Desse modo, traz como objetivo geral, investigar a relação da língua, do sujeito e da enunciação em Memorial de Maria Moura. E como objetivos específicos: a) compreender a concepção de língua presente na obra, articulando-a a noção de alíngua; b) analisar os deslizes dos nomes através dos eixos metonímico e metafórico; c) estudar o sujeito do inconsciente, articulando-o ao movimento da língua/alingua para a composição do romance. Para tanto, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa teórico-empírica qualitativa, cujos procedimentos metodológicos adotados consistiram em trazer categorias de análise advindas das teorias de Saussure, Benveniste, Jakobson, Lacan-Freud, bem como os trabalhos de Milner (1987), Authier-Revuz (1998-2004), dentre outros. Tendo em vista que, sobre a linguagem, poderia se pensar que os linguistas procuram dar conta do funcionamento da linguagem dita corrente, no entanto, quanto ao funcionamento da linguagem poética, esse é visto pelo viés do desvio, dos deslizes, sendo, portanto, concebida como uma manifestação da prática linguística. Assim, seria a própria criação literária, enquanto manifestação de uma vivência da língua, uma contribuição importante para uma teoria da linguagem. No que concerne a relação entre a linguística e a psicanálise, segundo Flores (2002), dá-se por uma articulação sem muitos problemas, visto que, o interesse desta pela linguagem está posto desde os primeiros textos de Freud. É assim, uma relação que se estabelece pelo estudo do sujeito e do sentido, para tanto, lembramos Milner (1987), em O amor da língua, trazendo determinadas questões linguísticas, impossíveis de serem descritas sem que para isso, haja a intervenção do sujeito o sujeito lacaniano. Lidar com as questões da língua, do sujeito e da enunciação, num entrecruzamento de saberes distintos: a linguística, a literatura e a psicanálise lacaniana, encontrando nelas, pontos de ancoragem comuns, e até divergências, no trato do fenômeno abordado, no caso a constituição do sujeito do inconsciente enquanto sujeito da enunciação. Não obstante, a interlocução entre a linguística e outros campos do saber tem sido um tema polêmico, é oportuno observar que, iniciar uma investigação que associe os estudos linguísticos à análise literária durante muito tempo representou uma tarefa de risco, pois conforme Maingueneau (1996, p. 1), as relações entre Linguística e a Análise da Literatura não estão nem um pouco claras, sobremaneira, separadas por um fosso . De certo, a relação entre Linguística e Literatura costuma ser vista como sendo unilateral, ou seja, o que é visado é a contribuição da ciência da linguagem para a compreensão do texto literário

“In Specie”: Educational Advocacy, the Material Book, and Female Intellectual Communities in Seventeenth-Century British Women’s Writing

In the early seventeenth century, a number of female writers began to exercise a strong degree of agency in the materials they published and the discourse in which they participated. Discussions of expanded female education abounded in their writing, and by the end of the century, female writers had become bold enough to write tracts proposing entirely new educational institutions for women. These proposed all-female schools would have provided teachers and students alike with both an intellectual space free from patriarchal strictures and the opportunity to expand their minds unimpeded. Through analysis of works by Rachel Speght, Elizabeth Isham, Margaret Cavendish, Bathsua Makin, and Mary Astell, this thesis traces the broad preoccupation of female writers with female intellectual communities across the seventeenth century. This project adds to current and past scholarly discussions of female reading in the early modern period, notes rhetorical continuities between the works of these various writers, and hopes to contribute to our understanding of early feminist thought.

Cette thèse se propose d’étudier comment, à travers sa singulière écriture, John Neal, prenant son contemporain James Fenimore Cooper pour anti-modèle, ambitionne de réformer la littérature américaine, afin de satisfaire au besoin naissant d’indépendance et de renouveau national. Dans une certaine tradition américaine, la frontière est moins une limite territoriale qu’un seuil dynamique, un locus americanus, lieu de tous les possibles. Et c’est bien en ce sens que le romancier du Maine, homme des transgressions, homme de l’entre-deux, écrit «à la frontière» : entre littérature et engagement, entre la scène et la chaire, le masculin et le féminin, l’Indien et le Blanc, sa prose hésite, souvent. Il conviendra en somme d’analyser au plus près cette fabrique alternative de littérarité qu’est l’écriture nealienne, dans l’incertitude des commencements, lorsque l’expression du «génie national» prétend s’instaurer en critère de jugement et faire table rase des modèles d’importation. / This thesis explores how, through his singular writing style, John Neal, using fellow-writer James Fenimore Cooper as an anti-model, sets out to pioneer a thorough reformation of the so-called American literature, in an attempt to satisfy the ever-increasing need for independence and national renewal. In a certain American tradition, the frontier is less a territorial boundary than a « dynamic threshold », a locus americanus where wishful thinking comes true. Thus it is that this transgressive Maine author, a man of the neutral ground, or, rather, of the middle ground, writes «at the frontier»: between literature and committed literature, between the stage and the pulpit, the masculine and the feminine, or the Indian and the white man, his prose often wavers. Hence, our focus will be on the alternative literary vision for « the great Republic of Letters », encapsulated within Neal’s own writing, shaped as it was by the uncertainties of a nation in the making. Those were the days when «national genius» had an edge on European models. Those were John Neal’s days.

Experiencing loss : traumatic memory and nostalgic longing in Anne Landsman's The Devil's Chimney and The Rowing Lesson, and Rachel Zadok's Gem Squash Tokoloshe

This thesis examines the experience of loss in Anne Landsman’s novels The Devil’s Chimney (1997) and The Rowing Lesson (2008), and Rachel Zadok’s Gem Squash Tokoloshe (2005). Positing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as an impetus for emerging literary traditions within contemporary South African fiction, the argument begins by evaluating the reasons for the TRC’s widespread impact, and considers the role that the individual author may play within a culture which is undergoing dramatic socio-political upheavals. Through theoretical explication, close reading, and textual comparison, the argument initiates a dialogue between psychoanalysis and literary analysis, differentiating between two primary modes of experiencing loss, namely traumatic and nostalgic memory. Out of these sets of concerns, the thesis seeks to understand the inextricability of body, memory and landscape, and interrogates the deployment of these tropes within the contexts of traumatic and nostalgic loss, examining each author’s nuanced invocation. A central tenet of the argument is a consideration, moreover, of how the dialogic imagination has shaped storytelling, and whether or not narrative may provide therapeutic affect for either author or reader. The study concludes with an interpretation of the changing shape of literary expression within South Africa.

Arms control and disarmament in Southern Africa: An assessment of civil society and state responses in Mozambique 1995 – 2003

Thesis (MA (Political Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis aims to ascertain the level of success which civil society and state actors have had in dealing with issues of arms control and disarmament in the SADC region during the post- Cold War era. The main research question shall be divided into two key questions, the first being: How successful have states been in managing arms control and disarmament in the SADC region? The second question being: How successful has civil society been in managing arms control and disarmament in the SADC region? The study is therefore an evaluative study and shall be focused on the case study of Mozambique. Two arms control processes shall be evaluated in this regard. First is the “Transforming weapons into Ploughshares” or TAE project which is a civil society campaign aimed at minimizing the harsh impacts that Small Arms and Light Weapons have on Mozambican society. The demarcated time period for this project shall be 1995-2003. Second is state driven operation between South African and Mozambican police aimed at locating and destroying arms caches responsible for fuelling the illicit trade in light arms between the two countries. This project was known as Operation Rachel and shall be evaluated from the period of 1995-2001. Through evaluating these two projects, the study shall seek to make the point that in terms of arms control in post-conflict developing states, there is a role for both state and civil societies. The role of civil society organizations can be seen as one of identifying security threats, raising public awareness and democratizing security issues such as arms control so that society at large becomes active in negating the problem. The role of the state on the other hand is to live up to its duties as the chief provider of security for the designated population within the state’s territorial boundary. Arms control in Mozambique and in the SADC region in general has been mediocre at best since as shall be demonstrated, states are far too weak to offer any meaningful protection to citizens and secondly civil society organizations which have taken it upon themselves to offer this kind of protection are just not well resourced enough to undertake state responsibilities. Thus the key recommendation of this study is that Southern African states invariably need to build up their capacities. Light weapons have spread uncontrollably throughout the region because weak and fractured states could not contain the problem and continue struggling to manage a multitude of security threats. It is therefore up to civil society organizations to build strong societies which can demand stronger state action. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis se doel is om vas te stel tot watter mate die burgerlike samelewing en Staat akteurs sukses behaal het in terme van wapenbeheer en ontwapening in die Suider-Afrikaanse Ontwikkelings Gemeenskap (SAOG) streek na die koue oorlog. Die hoof navorsings vraag sal in twee kern vrae verdeel word, Die eerste vraag is: Hoeveel sukses het die burgerlike samelewing in die SAOG streek gehad met die bestuur van wapenbeheer en ontwapening? Die tweede vraag is: hoeveel sukses het Staat akteurs in die SAOG streek gehad met die bestuur van wapenbeheer en ontwapening? Hierdie studie is dus ʼn evaluerende studie en sal op Mosambiek fokus as gevalle-studie. Twee wapenbeheer prosesse sal in hierdie tesis evalueer word. Eerste, is die “Transforming Weapons into Ploughshares” of “TAE” projek wat ʼn burgerlike samelewings veldtog is, wat hom ten doel gestel het om die negatiewe impak van ligte-wapens op Mosambiekse samelewing te verminder. Tweedens, het burgerlike samelewings organisasies wat die verantwoordelikheid aangeneem het om beskerming te verleen net nie genoeg hulpbronne om die staat se verantwoordelikhede te vervul nie. Dus, is die kern aanbeveling van hierdie tesis dat Suider-Afrikaanse state hulle bekwaamheid en kapasiteit sal moet versterk. Ligte wapens het onbeheersd dwarsdeur die streek versprei omdat swak state nie oor die kapasiteit beskik om veelvuldige veiligheids en sekuriteits-bedreigings te kan hanteer nie. Dit hang dus van burgerlike samelewingsv organisasies af om sterk samelewings te bou wat op hul beurt kan aandring op sterker staatsoptrede om hierdie kwessies meer daadwerklik aan te spreek.

Imagine a theater. Build one in your mind. I do not care if it is the largest theater in the universe or if it is the size of a shoebox. The theater can be an elaborate construction with gilded cherubs and priceless jewels. If you would prefer the theater to be a minimal design, imagine it that way. Maybe the theater is made out of glass or crystal. You can be all alone in the theater or maybe you are seated next to an alien, a cave man, or a robot. As the curtain rises an enormous pipe organ is spewing out J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The sound is colossal. The stage is designed to look like a filthy and bleak art studio. Sculptures that look like decaying flesh hang from the ceiling. Papers and dirty painting rags are scattered all over the floor. A roach crawls towards some moldy food in the wastebasket. A piece of beef jerky sits next to a pile of paint tubes and paintbrushes. Canvases are stacked against the wall. Dried paint is splattered everywhere. A woman enters stage left. As she begins to speak, the music fades… “My most recent paintings are meant to serve as gateways between daily life and an exotic utopian fantasy. These strange psychological spaces function as portals into a new frontier inhabited with the most stupendous creatures. Active volcanoes, carnivorous plants, terrible lizards, pink Chihuahuas, flesh-eating insects, unidentified flying objects, and a host of other amazing things coexist in this cruel tropical paradise. “Everything I do is a self-portrait and a disguise. I imagine the characters in my paintings to be mutant clones. The act of painting is like looking in the mirror. I like to spend most of my time doing one or the other. I am driven by an insatiable urge to see what I truly look like. I suffer from an unfulfilled desire to meet myself. I am frustrated with impressions and reflections. These confessions reveal my work as possibly the most disgusting display of narcissism in the entire history of art. “The act of painting is an absurd and self-indulgent enterprise. I paint with the ridiculous and frivolous purpose of delighting the eye. Nevertheless, my hope is that my paintings capture an important aspect of my utopian fantasy with their sumptuous surroundings embellished with rainbows, natural disasters, butterflies, exotic grasses and bizarre costumes. “My paintings can be read on many different levels from surface to deep allegory. The finished product is the result of hours upon hours of painting, pondering, and dreaming. Below the surface lies a nauseating abyss. “My work is a delicious feast for the aesthetic consumer. I am a villainous mad scientist with a hunger for immortality. My eyes are gluttonous fools. I am a mystery and a deception. Vermillion is my opulent fetish. Lemon yellow is my nemesis.” The music grows louder again. The woman begins to cackle. She then takes a deep breath and a deeper and more dramatic bow. She exits stage right--you find that you want to applaud--but unfortunately, this story is not over. I suggest that you get yourself a snack like some popcorn, chocolate, or gummy bears before reading any further. The curtain slowly and elegantly comes down.

Studies into the Initial Conditions, Flow Rate, and Containment System of Oil Field Leaks in Deep Water

Oil well blow outs are investigated to determine methods to quickly and accurately respond to an emergency situation. Flow rate is needed to guide containment and dispersal operations. The Stratified Integral Multiphase Plume, SIMP, model was used to investigate the range of initial conditions available to integral modeling. Sensitivity to initial conditions is modest, but without experimental data at the appropriate scale the most accurate condition is unable to be determined. Flow rates are difficult to directly measure in blow out situations, so another method must be determined; therefore, sensitivity of several parameters to flow rate was also evaluated. Methane concentration in the first intrusion can be used in conjunction with velocity and trap height measurements to determine flow rate using an integral model. Plume width and temperature were determined to have little sensitivity. Separately, a containment dome was tested in the laboratory to determine if a full scale dome can be used to contain an oil leak in the field. The dome was found to have satisfactory entrapment in the designed position.
