Masturbation and Relationship Satisfaction

Ramos, Marciana Julia 05 1900 (has links)
Relationship satisfaction often declines after marriage or cohabitation and between 40-50% of marriages end in divorce. Furthermore, many couples who stay together report feeling unsatisfied in their relationships. Thus, it is important to examine factors that contribute to enduring and satisfying relationships. One factor that has been closely linked to relationship satisfaction is the sexual relationship of the couple. One aspect of the sexual relationship that has received little attention is masturbation. Although most psychologists hold positive views about masturbation, and recommend masturbation in many instances, the empirical data examining the association between masturbation and relationship satisfaction has mixed findings, with the majority of studies reporting a small negative relationship between these variables. The purpose of the present study was to further explore the association between masturbation and relationship satisfaction, focusing on possible moderators and mediators of this relationship including: masturbation guilt, openness with an individual's partner about masturbation, gender, object of arousal during masturbation, and reason for masturbating. Overall, masturbation frequency did not have a significant association with relationship satisfaction. However, the object of arousal during masturbation and openness about masturbation moderated the association between masturbation frequency and relationship satisfaction. Specifically, individuals who (a) used objects of arousal other than the partner when masturbating and (b) were less open about the masturbation reported a more negative association between masturbation frequency and relationship satisfaction.

Érotiques ou Pornographiques? Une Enquête du Procès du ‘Love-Shop’ 1969 Curiosités Désirables

Scott, Peyton 01 April 2013 (has links)

Rosol, Piotr 19 November 2013 (has links)
The Freudian notion of Das Unheimliche comes back to us in Lacan’s philosophy as the Real that returns (to the world). The experience of a fragmented subject appears in an ordinary event, and it shows the monstrous, the pathological, which, in the culture of the West, is always unrepresentable. The uncanny in literature is another term with which we can describe experiences that are incompatible with the symbolical order, and consist in bringing back to the surface of the text what the dominant discourse of power and knowledge consigned to oblivion, placed on the margins of representation, as something that is disgusting and repulsive (see Kristeva’s category of the abject, or Bataille’s the accursed, or Foucault’s the monstrous). These subsequent avatars of the uncanny I show with the help of the notion of the glance (strongly present already in Freud’s essay) so as to reach the moment in which a phantasmatic scene (of looking and being observed) becomes the condition of writing. This is also the moment in which the loving subject (as described by Barthes) makes the Beloved appear in the gesture of writing, whereas the object itself (as something shameful, suppressed), in keeping with the economy of desire, is supposed to remain forever at a distance. The thesis in question is based on the works by Jean Genet and Witold Gombrowicz, that is, the writers who are uncanny par excellence. This is psychoanalytical comparison of biographies, styles of writing, philosophy of life and the deconstruction of differences and similarities of these two writers.

Doing it for themselves: sexual subjectivity in cinematic depictions of female autoeroticism

Unknown Date (has links)
Whereas male masturbation has generally been normalized by being the butt of friendly jokes and a popular subject in romantic comedies, the predominant discourse surrounding female masturbation, both in society and the movies, is silence and stigmatization. However, female masturbation is symbolically powerful because it signifies a female sexuality that is not dependent on male presence. This thesis seeks to explore depictions of female masturbation, specifically looking at how female characters who engage in autoeroticism are stigmatized, controlled or silenced. This thesis will also explore the minority of depictions that show the act as liberating in films like Pleasantville (1998) and Better than Chocolate (1999). / by Megan Tomei. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2012. / Includes bibliography. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / System requirements: Adobe Reader.

Hiding, Sandra, Larsson, Felicia January 2007 (has links)

The aim of this study was to investigate the emotions among the staff at the group housings when they observe the caretakers expressions of masturbation and how the staff handles these expressions in their daily and long-term work. The theoretical concepts that were used in this study are group housing as a public and private arena, occupational role, relation, humanistic effort, pedagogical effort, empowerment, care ethic and emotions. The concepts are related to each other and constitutes the foundation for the analysis of the empirical data used in this study. A qualitative study was carried out, in forms of half structured interviews with six informants, of which the majority was women. It came to light that the interviewees only had positive feelings for the caretaker’s expressions of masturbation. The interviewees had different procedures in their daily work, while there were more similarities in how the staff worked in a long-term perspective with the caretaker’s expressions of masturbation.
