The ideas of a precursor : ʾAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kawākibi (1849-1902), in relation to the trend of Muslim-Arab political thoughtKedourie, Sylvia January 1953 (has links)
The first difficulty which confronts the student of the ideas of ʾAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kawākibi is the absence of a full biography of the man; al-Kawākibi did not have his Boswell, nor would his personality have attached a faithful and admiring disciple as Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍa. He is nevertheless a well thought of figure, and he appears in the standard literary and biographical dictionaries. It is to be noticed however that all the biographical notes which refer to him have one and the same source: the two official documents which Rashīd Riḍa, editor of al-Manār printed in his obituary notice about al-Kawākibi. These documents and the life of al-Kawākibi given in al-Manār were used by all subsequent writers and editors of biographical compilations.

Réalité augmentée haptique: théorie et applications.Bayart, Benjamin 07 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)

Investigation of an Exercise-Induced State of Hypofrontality : And its Potential Association with Central FatigueWohlwend, Martin January 2012 (has links)
The reticular-activating hypofrontality model of acute exercise (RAH) predicts exercise-induced hypoactivity in frontal cortex which mediates executive function. Connors Continuous Performance Test (CCPT) was used to investigate changes in executive function during- and post treadmill running in healthy volunteers (n=30, 15 male). In a randomized order, subjects performed the CCPT at rest, during low- (LI; 63% maximal heart rate; MHR) and moderate intensity (MI; 75% MHR). Separately, subjects then performed isocalorifically matched exercise bouts of LI, MI and high intensity interval training (HIT) consisting of 4x4 min with 90% MHR and 3 min recovery at 60-70% MHR. Repeated measures ANOVAs revealed main effects of exercise intensity for reaction time RT during- (p≤0.001) and post exercise (p≤0.0001). Subsequent analyses showed an overall increase of RT during exercise compared to rest (p≤0.005). RT decreased significantly from rest to post exercise levels in an exercise intensity dependent, linear fashion (p≤0.0001). Commission errors showed a non significant linear trend to increase both during (p=0.057), and post exercise (p=0.052) as a function of intensity. In a follow up study, we sought to relate observed exercise effects to frontal cortex activity through the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) (n=4) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Prior to TMS stimulation cortical excitability was estimated post running through motor-evoked potentials (MEP) elicited from the primary motor cortex (M1) induced by single burst TMS and measured in the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle using electromyography. At rest, inhibitory cathodal tDCS with left DLPFC cathode and right supraorbital anode led to improved reaction time and increased amount of commission errors, whereas anodal stimulatory tDCS in the immediate post exercise period was unable to recover the post exercise effect. Continuous theta burst stimulation over the left DLPFC post running further impaired inhibitory control and facilitated reaction time. Different findings during- and after- exercise suggests that potential contributing mechanisms such as computational and metabolic factors may be differentially active during these respective conditions. Furthermore, the fact that an inhibitory TMS protocol pronounced the post running effects even more and that we were able to mimic the reported RAH effects at rest with inhibitory frontal tDCS, but observed different patterns during exercise, suggests that the latter state cannot be fully explained by reducing activity in the left frontal cortex alone. Failure to modify the after exercise effect with stimulatory tDCS also supports an interplay of different factors and might emphasize the strong, robust effects of exercise that cannot simply be attenuated by current application. Increases in MEP post running for 35min paired with the observed performance decrements imply an excited state of M1 and might serve as an explanatory cross-link to central fatigue suggesting that a hypofrontal state might enhance the motor cortical drive to activate muscles.

The present research aimed to verify the efficiency of an Anaerobic Hybrid Reactor (AHR) supplied with a mixture of fatty acids, acetic, propionic, butyric and lactic and methanol as well. The total amount of COD was 6.88 g/L. The performance of the reactor was remarkably stable and efficient during PCP additions at range from 2.0 to 21.0 mg/L. The AHR showed a great performance in the PCP absence, inoculated with sludge with an specific methanogenic (SMA) activity of 0,057 g.COD-CH4/g. VS.d. During the 21 months of operation without PCP, the reduction of COD was around 93% and methane was up to 84% in the biogas. Before PCP addiction, two toxicity batch tests conducted with the granular sludge presented IC50 values around 10.12 mg/L and 13.69 mg/L. In the presence of PCP, at the range of 2.0 to 21.0 mg/L, the efficiency of volatile fatty acids breakdown was 93%, 64% and 74% respectively for butyric, propionic and acetic acids. Individually, at the presence of the higher PCP concentration studied, a decrease in the conversion of COD to biogas and organic acids removal occurred, mainly with propionic acid. PCP total removal of more than 99% was reached by granular sludge activities formed by the total time of reactor operation with a prevalence of methanogenic Archaea, verified under direct microscopy exams and in situ hybridization. Methanogenic cells predominance was noticed with 105 to 106 cells/mL during enumeration on methanol and lactate plus sulfate culture media, respectively. The results suggest that methanogenic Archaea can be involved in PCP degradation. The organochlorine removal rate was 1.07 mg PCP.g-1 VS.d-1 during the highest PCP (21.0 mg/L) concentration addition.

The Implementation of Governance to Counter Islamist Militancy in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa ProvinceDiOrio, David Robert 01 January 2016 (has links)
Militancy inspired by Islamists is escalating globally, and government action is necessary to protect vulnerable populations. Security professionals generally agree that governance may complement the use of force to defeat militants; however, current doctrine does not address the concurrent integration of governance in a comprehensive strategy. This interpretive case study explored Pakistan's application of governance during the 2009 Khyber operation in Swat Valley, code-named Operation Rah-e-Rast. The central research question focused on how governance activities were integrated with military operations to subdue militancy. Data were collected through interviews with 6 planners, Pakistani secondary source survey data, and government artifacts. Data were inductively coded using a progressive axial coding process and validated through methodological triangulation. Data were then analyzed using a case study analytical model, grounded in neo-Clausewitzian theoretical principles, to derive key themes. Key findings indicate that an interministry collaborative approach to regain the public trust was more effective in placating violence than was solely using military action. Sound governance, enabled by strategic communications and intelligence, fostered tribal relationships that promoted confidence and undermined the militant support base. The civil-military planning protocols were successful, but mainly ad-hoc and suboptimized. Formal training, standing civil-military planning forums, and planning process improvements stemming from the Pakistan experience could instill social change by assisting national leaders in developing a cogent countermilitancy strategy to defeat the global Islamist movement.

Dégradation mécanique de solutions de polymères et ses impacts en récupération assistée d'hydrocarbures / Mechanical degradation of polymers solutions and their impact on enhanced oil recoveryDupas, Adeline 12 December 2012 (has links)

However, polymer flooding is challenged by possible mechanical degradation of polymer solutions during injection and in the reservoir, due to the flow induced scission of macromolecules. This work aims at better understanding the scission mechanisms and scenarios, but also their impact on polymer flooding. We investigated the onset of mechanical degradation of poly(ethylene oxide) and partially hydrolysed polyacrylamide solutions, for different concentration regimes (dilute and semi-dilute regimes), under laminar or inertial conditions, but also under good or bad solvent conditions. The study of mechanical degradation of polymer solutions and their impact on the rheological properties was performed using different degradation devices and different rheometers, including a microfluidic extensional device; these investigation techniques were combined with measurements of the molecular weight distributions using size exclusion chromatography coupled with light scattering experiments. The study first shows that an extensional component is needed to get a mechanical degradation of polymer chains. The results also clearly show that the degradation mechanisms are very different in dilute and semi-dilute regime. In dilute regime, the mechanical degradation of polymer solutions does not dependent on flow regime and mainly affects the macromolecules with high molecular weights, with a mid-chain scission scenario. On the other hand, in semi-dilute regime, mechanical degradation depends on flow regime: in laminar flows, degradation is governed by the entanglement network and chain scission is random, whereas in inertial flows, chain degradation is similar to that observed in dilute regime, with the same mid-chain scission scenario. Besides, the results show that the extensional rheological properties can be very strongly affected by mechanical degradation. At last, the results of a preliminary study of the injectivity of a slightly degraded semi-dilute polymer solution in porous media show that mechanical degradation improves polymer injectivity near the wellbore.
